The weird mix of pre-rendered sprites and ps2 era graphics don't work. Pre-rendered sprites need simpler world graphics and if you go pre-rendered sprites you can't mix in proper 3d models with them except for like a table or something simple like that. You can't have the player's viewmodel be 3d and fight pre-rendered dudes. It just doesn't work visually.

They should have gone for shadow tower / eternal ring in full proper 3d.

I think they used a bunch of asset store 3d for the pre-rendered stuff. Some of that stuff looks way too familiar.

Job Quest: An RPG where your resume is your character sheet/stats and you have to take requests around town for experience and needed gear which slowly fills out your resume and increases relevant stats for future jobs. Then when you get your first proper job, that opens up the game for more locations and better jobs, which provide more interesting quests and resources to then be able to upgrade jobs and so on

i think my game is great and becoming fun even in this early stage. but its exactly the genre i like which is probably a non-mainstream genre (ss13/rimworld/cdda/etc type stuff) where people like a 2d topdown game with complex systems yet simplistic CORE gameplay but with hundreds+ of things you can actually do or create

i got an item creator, ability creator, character creator (create androids and genetic mutants and such) all accessible from various stations, they all use the same underlying "creation system" though which is mostly ecs + data drive definitions and the stations just enforce rules on top of that which "seem" to limit what you can make but under the hood its all using the same system that only limits players not me from creating whatever i want.

I'm going to honestly make a 2D engine that has the character creator that is a fussion of fighter factory with 2D fighter maker 2k2, and has fighter maker 2k2 pseudocoding mixed with rpg maker events and then the rest of the game is made of gdevelop behaviours and rpg maker maps in 2.5D and godot node layers for the GUI and fighter maker story mode mixed with shmup creator enemy spawning and screens.

Graphics really aren't important for player retention.
When I booted up Order of the Sinking Star demo, the game looked fucking gorgeous.

Thing is, a few hours into the game, and I stopped caring about the graphics. All that magic was gone after becoming accustomed.

So my progress is basically complete and just barely over the 2 week window I gave myself by like a day or two. The core game loop is officially established and working with no issues. You can create an account, log in and create a character, you'll start with a default set of gear and spawn into the world. From there you can go fight and kill monsters and the combat log goes into the chat box and the experience goes into your total level and skills while hp and such tick down. Enemies die and drop loot and I can completely control every spawn zone from enemy type, to spawn duration and amount and their loot table individually per zone on the map. Looting works flawlessly and if you die you drop your inventory and have to run back to collect it either from where you started or the spawn portal if you saved to one. Now I just need to spend the time building up the little starter town scene so it looks prettier and I will share video updates.

How much do you pay? I'm using gemini pro extended at the $20/mo tier and its pretty good at just spitting out perfect functions for a whole phase for like 5% usage on the 5 hour window. If I want to implement some thing, I just look for a good tutorial and copy paste what they do into my project. Relying on tutorials is probably going to fuck me in the long run. I understand what the code does, but I would struggle to implement it from scratch.

My custom game engine has a map editor inspired by Source 2 hammer now.
Still working a bit on the UX, needs important features like splitting and merging brushes, and baking them into static mesh at author-time (saving the level still cooks the meshes automatically in clusters, but manual baking would be for more complex level geometry)

Mind you, the engine still supports static meshes for level design - there are no BSP/VIS compilations. In the future, I'll also support instancing for repeated level geometry like hallways or columns, but even those will also support direct baking to static mesh format.

It does look worse, FISH has coherence in its ugliness, the other game is a mix and match of ugly edit artifacts, stretched icons, AA, high fidelity and low fidelity AI assets and so on. Additionally, looks aside, the short gameplay in FISH is actually somewhat fun if you like this type of games. That other game just looks like a complete slop, instead of a somewhat decently put together slop. Either way, gameplay >> looks. Which is why programming and direction is more important than art.

My strategy is to get a non-aggression pact with everybody straight away (human special ability) and then max out research to population and computers so as to maximize my production points while having only 3-4 planets. Then expand research to make ships that could defeat the Guardian of Orion and colonize it and have a planet with 4x research points. Then whenever someone declares war, I take all their planets except their home planet until I can vote myself into being president of the galaxy and get a good ending without genociding anybody. And if two enemies try to genocide each other I try to prevent it. I've been playing this game exactly like this for 30 years without any variation. I've been thinking what makes someone want to play this way and whether I can incorporate it into my game. Or if I should remake/demake MOO1. But maybe I'm the only weirdo like this and it wouldn't be a good game.
