The spectacle isn't any more impressive than it was in previous games (infact, it's often less so), and I certainly hope that by "quality" you're not talking about the technical side of the game given how glitchy it can get, especially when playing as Classic Sonic. If this game wanted to be a "love letter" it completely failed, it looks more like a mockery. All the stages it rehashes are completely lacking in their actual appeal and the only moments they manage to be decent is in a few of the rare instances they did something different. This game's Rooftop Run act 2 is probably the laziest thing in any Sonic game ever. The idea that it is a love letter is laughable, the entire premise is built around erasing several years of the franchise's history, separating Classic/Modern as if those aren't the same series and ignoring that the Adventure gameplay existed. Classic plays nothing like the actual 90s games and presenting a watered down Boost as the definitive 3D Sonic experience is insulting to all the 3D games released up to that point

Making villains sympathetic is a big problem with writers nowadays because they think it adds "depth". And the fandom seems to have caught this too. For example, I've seen discussions about hypotheticals with the Metarex appearing in the games or the comics with people saying they need to be written more sympathetic, especially Dark Oak, because he came off as too maliciously evil.

You didn't mention them, but I think the Wisps are also great. You're seeing the world from a different perspective, actually, an opposite perspective.
