I can understand Sonurge's appeal. But IDW fucked up so royally with Sonic as a character that its true potential will always remain unrealized. The usual formula goes that Sonic meets someone, they interact, and through that he incentivizes the other party to become better somehow. Like Emerl, Elise, Merlina, Shahra, Blaze, Marine, Sage. the kid from Blade of Courage, etc. It's what he does. But Flynn clearly wants to do away with the usual structure of the story completely with Surge, and it ironically hurts her character within the grand scheme of things more than helps it. If she becomes better and reaches a conclusion where she becomes a hero on her own without Sonic's guidance, well, it just isn't a Sonic the Hedgehog story. And nobody really wants to read that.

Most Western Sonic fans thought the games were simple, but spending time on modern Sonic Twitter shows people picking apart Archie to say it's weak writing and inaccurate. I filter out the inaccuracy criticisms though. While there's planes Sonic Joe and more subtext and more stuff, there is a lot of deep talk about this that I don't know remember the specifics of off the top of my head, while there are still Japanese Sonic stories that have style and glitz too like Maekawa games. Japanese Sonic is simple and people don't expect anything beneath the surface because of their expectations.
