Unfortunately this game (Sir Lovelot)'s vsync setting doesn't seem to stick and I need to reapply it after restarting the game even if it still says it's enabled (which really means I should just forget the in-game setting and force vsync with MangoHud or libstrangle in the launch options instead). But I've seen a lot of games even with working vsync run at insane frame rates by default. Why is this allowed? Imagine making a game that potentially overheats computers.

It's a 2-D indie game, not Counter Strike or whatever.

yeah, i got one about a week and a half after reservations opened up. i got the 512gb model and already had a steam controller, i threw a 1tb ssd in it from my old gaming pc i was selling that already had steamOS installed on it, it was pretty seamless. i literally wanted one cuz it fit my man cave better and takes up less space, i also dont care about setting everything to max and getting muh frames, the only thing ill take is 60 fps and no stutter, and desu SM runs everything pretty good so far (1440p, medium settings and balanced/quality fsr for some games, but im also an oldfag who likes to play alot of shit from last gen anyway)

Well yeah, and as you can see it also has a proper window icon. I wish they moved from GLFW to SDL long time ago, so it would save us from many troubles.
I believe it GLFW retards' fault. What's the point of developing library without making a release for 2 FUCKING YEARS? Nobody will use latest git builds, and no distribution will ship them either. And imagine how many bugs will surface after 2 years of development without any testing when they will finally make a release?

webm script isn't cropping based on file size but on black area of source video. In Crimson Desert I had problem with VRR when fps reported by MangoHUD was different from display's refresh rate (it was all over the place). Was trying to find what the issue is, thought it's KWin shitting itself, even tried Hyprland with the same result, thought it's amdgpu/mesa issue. And then I played other games like Cybeprunk and Q2RTX where game's FPS and monitor refresh rate were pretty much the same, so I decided not care, probably Korean devs shat the pants somewhere.

I love VRR but it's still kind of as much of a meme as HDR sometimes. My IPS monitor's VRR shits itself in some 60 FPS locked games and kicks on LFC which causes it to flicker like crazy when other games are completely fine when capped at 60.
>>
>>575025787
I heard that it's only OLED and VA monitors that flicker with VRR. I have miniLED with IPS and never saw it flicker with VRR even on low refresh rates. Although I don't know if there's a point to use VRR on Wayland: I've compared running game within VRR interval and at maximum refresh rate and didn't notice the difference.

Why do I keep getting this shit when trying to use fitgirl repacks?
I used lutris, selected wine as my runner and GE-Proton as the wine version.
I got my windows user friend to try it out and he managed to install the game, and the guy in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UWLv0BizB84
seems to do things exactly the same way as me, except he chose cachyos for his wine version instead of GE-proton.

>>575038020
I had the same issue when I tried to install some old archive from 2016 or something. It's a problem with unarc.dll and windows users are having issues too. New archives don't have this issue afaik.
I believe unarc tries to write to some unexisting windows temp directory but I didn't have patience to test this out. %TEMP% or whatever they are called in Windows.
Proton has nothing to do with this stuff... Most of the stuff you are reading about this on internet is bullshit techlet voodoo anyhow.
It's just better to source direct downloads and avoid repacks unless you really can't find anything else.

In most cases game's software cursor and real cursor don't even share position since game just grabs relative input and real cursor stays locked somewhere.

Big if true.
Also, has anyone else noticed that sage doesn't do anything anymore? (On /v/, at least. I haven't checked other boards.) Go find a thread near the bottom of the catalog (one that isn't getting many replies so that there's no confusion about what bumped it), reply with sage in the options field, and watch it go straight to the top when the catalog updates.
No wonder the board is so bad when a feature designed to let people go out of their way to avoid bumping garbage results in the garbage being bumped anyway.
>>
>>575205009
I use it on /g/ fairly often and it doesn't bump the thread
>>
>>575165159
It's funny how almost all the problems with gaming on Linux are because of crap attached to the games rather than the games themselves.
>>575205735
And you waited long enough for the catalog to update and the threads really didn't bump?
It must be a deliberate effort to keep /v/ shitty, then. (Or maybe marketers who pay to break global rule 11 complained about their threads not bumping? I don't mean to be a conspiracy schizo, but if it's not a bug affecting all boards then I can't imagine any non-malicious reason for it.)
I've tested it multiple times and I'm absolutely sure I'm not mistaking a bump from my sage post for any other bump, because it happens even when no one else has posted for several minutes before or after.

Not a sandboxing/security expert (and if I were, then I'd probably just be doomposting about how every solution is inadequate, because someone with physical access to your machine can do absolutely anything short of cracking full-drive encryption, at which point they can still ruin your day for free by smashing the shit with a hammer).
But Firejail and Bubblewrap can restrict access to your home directory, which is probably all you would need unless you're dealing with malware that's going to use an exploit to become root and fuck you anyway.
I have a wrapper script that, among other things, runs bwrap with
>--bind /home/${USER}/fakehome /home/${USER}
so that the wrapped program can't see my real home directory. I haven't tested it much and I wouldn't trust it to save me from super hackers (frankly I just wanted to protect myself from rm -rf ~/), so it's probably shit and not worth posting in its entirety. But in general, bwrap will let you bind directories like that, so you can give a fake "home" to stuff you're running.
Pretty sure bwrap is what Flatpak uses for its sandboxing under the hood, by the way.

Lyle.
>Does it "just work"?
Yes but no. It runs but it needs a presumably non-free font (smalle.fon) copied into the Wine prefix. I'm too lazy to try every snowflake-ass Proton build out there, but unless there have been recent advances in the world of libre fonts, I'm guessing they all have the same problem of in-game text boxes being wrong. (With Linux Mint's default Wine 9.0, which is perfectly sufficient to run the game aside from the missing font, the in-game tutorial/new-item-pickup text is too large and sometimes flows out the bottom of the text box. I think I once saw another Wine/Proton build using a different-but-still-horribly-wrong font instead.)
Maybe other fonts are missing too, but smalle.fon is the only one I had to install to fix the glaring issues I noticed.
The other weird thing is that it freezes if I disable the game's built-in Vsync in the launcher window (not that there's any great reason to do so), and if I leave Vsync on, MangoHud (not pictured) shows it running at 120 fps, and trying to force a frame limit or Vsync with MangoHud/libstrangle doesn't seem to work as expected. I don't remember having these issues last time I played it, but it probably behaves differently with DXVK, which I'm not using at the moment.

Are you saying Portal (GNU/Linux version of course) should be the next game I play?
>>

Valve games are so silly.
>>
Adding "-vulkan" to the launch options makes it use DXVK, not native Vulkan. (Yes, this is the Linux build. I'm not using Proton. My MangoHud overlay would show that.) This isn't terribly surprising, considering it uses ToGL instead of native OpenGL by default.
I think I remember Half-Life 2 being the same way.
>filenames
Cool, it actually puts OpenGL or Vulkan in the window title. (My screenshot script uses xdotool to get it. Smarter than using $W in scrot's output filename pattern because that thinks the window is called "hl2_linux" so it's checking some other property that isn't always what the window displays. Not that I can see a window decoration in fullscreen but I can see the "Portal - Vulkan" when I use Alt+Tab.)
>>
>try to start new game in OpenGL mode
>crashes
What the fuck? Seriously, Gabe?
Switching back to Vulkan seems to fix it.
>>
Oh wait. I went into advanced video options and put everything on the lowest setting, and now I can start a new game in OpenGL.
Now my curiosity demands changing each setting one by one on to see what breaks it.
>>
Well, I don't remember exactly what settings I was using originally, but I attempted to restore the "recommended" (*) settings and it looks like Multicore Rendering is what breaks it. I have to leave this disabled or it crashes on starting a new game from the main menu. How weird. I wonder whether this is system-dependent or just broken. Probably the latter, because I see several ProtonDB comments saying it crashes on starting or loading a game. But of course their solution is to use Proton instead of changing this setting or adding the "-vulkan" flag, either of which seems to be sufficient.

To expose your actual ~/.wine inside the fake home created by
--bind /mnt/data/${USER}/fakehome /home/${USER}
you could add something like
--bind /home/${USER}/.wine /home/${USER}/.wine
(and, if I'm not mistaken, it wouldn't be able to use the link at ~.wine/dosdevices/z: to break out to your real home or anything else not shared by bwrap).

I'm trying to play resident evil survivor but the cursor just feels broken to me. It feels like there's a delay AND it feels like it's moving in a grid, if I could resolve either issue I think I could cope with it, but both together makes it feel unplayable

If anyone wants to try to see if they have better luck, I got the game off a site called "bestoldgames" which luckily zips the game alongside an english translation as the pc port only released in taiwan or something.

To install the game, I used bchunk to turn the bin/cue into an iso, mounted the iso, and ran "setup". Presumably due to failing to render japanese characters, the installer had garbled text, but you hardly need text to go through with it and the only change I made is that when it was asking for a target folder for the installation, I changed the path so it wasn't garbled anymore. Then to apply the translation I just moved the files into the game's installation folder. Then to run the game you just use gun_bio.exe

I also tried using this https://github.com/JacobMrox/Gun-Survivor-Classic-Rebirth-Release and while it let me increase resolution and improved the cursor icon, it still didn't fix the mouse movement :(. Also tried gamescope but still no change, if anyone has any ideas I am all ears

>>

Catherine is the only game I've had issues with, but that might be fixed now. Last time I tried it you had to run some random script online and use a specific version of proton ge and still then would audio and video desync in videos and the game would be unable to play some cutscenes or crash when playing them

I don't see the point in getting the Windows fans all riled up every day. I'll admit it can be really funny when you meet one who wants to die on a hill like "Linux can't run [random mid-2000s single-player game]" and then has to scramble to move the goalposts when you post a screenshot of it, but I hope the people who make these threads or participate in them don't think they're winning hearts and minds rather than just causing butthurt. Beyond simply posting "works on my machine" [with proof] when someone claims something can't be done, and then laughing as they own themselves by radiating absolute butthurt while blatantly moving the goalposts, I think it's a waste of time.
>>
>>575578339
And unfortunately they've mostly learned to stop making specific claims about what Linux can't do. There's no fun to be had with vague arguments about Linux being vaguely bad unless you want to engage in a philosophical debate.
I miss the days before Steam Deck when people who never heard of Proton but thought they knew everything would make fools of themselves.

does it use umu? does it support different protons, and not just different versions of it?
>>
>>575631408
This is only for NVIDIA, ignore it for AMD
>>
>>575637261
Sounds like too much bloat
>>
>>575647612
Its very experimental right now but I hope to release it on GitHub open source within a week. It does support different proton versions and it downloads proton ge as the default proton version.

The biggest struggle is getting all the dependencies perfect. Each prefix is installed with the same stuff so if it runs on windows it should run here just like steam.
Steam has a bunch of data on what windows games need to launch so their Linux launcher is more intelligent and seamless.

Everything else works flawlessly though. Linux after all is just a translation layer it runs the exact same hardware and processes it just translates them like it's native. It's not emulation.

Also I've been working on dosbox support which is now working natively for games like theme hospital.

I do, but it's a 9800x3d combined with a 5070ti so it's just gonna produce more heat. My linux machine is also my general PC so I keep it on so that doesn't help either.

OP here. I'm missing context because of deleted posts and the fact that I'm too lazy to go and read the reply chain on the archive, but no matter the cause of your butthurt, the answer is the same: No.
Though some people seem to find these threads helpful, it does not actually say "tech support" in the title, so even if it is the case that they are not helping anyone, I don't care. If you were to get help with your GNU and/or Linux problems here, that would just be a bonus. As far as I'm concerned, /lgg/ is for comfy gaming discussion and screenshot/video posting.
