This pity system is kinda wild. In the first place, pity carrying over seems kinda pointless. You can't reliably bank it, and if you get the student, it's back to a clean slate. So if you really need a banner it makes sense to save pulls, not roll on a banner you don't really want in hopes of that pity being usable.Also the concept is weird, pull on a banner you're okay with not having. You hit pickup. Yay? Now you have less pulls on the more important banner. No pity either.
