Valvedrones will be valvedrones. So far it just looks like a worse and more expensive version of the Quest 3 that you're paying a high premium to avoid Facebook

Hoping for better FOV too but have to see later.
You're also paying to NOT be in meta's ecosystem which is a plus for a lot of people.

GET OUT OF THE WAY IDIOT
>>
>>580938780
It looks like an upgrade to my index, and i refuse to ever buy zucchini so I'm rather optimistic, desu. I'm still going to wait a hot minute to see more reviews when it does eventually drop for real because the 30 year old boomer in me who was utterly fucking traumatized by wireless tech being horrid is honestly still very skeptical of any wireless in-house solutions, and also the loss of lighthouses worries me a little. But if it ends up being better than my fears then it will be an upgrade in every conceivable way in my specific case desu.
>>
>>580939870
IM WALKIN HERE!
>>
>>580940176
You'll have 2 days to see reviews before needing to decide. Probably. Try to get into the first batch, and ideally you really should have decided already.
>>
>>580941302
Why is that
>>
>>580941429
Valve will release price and reviews before opening the lotto. Demand is going to be high after that and if you want to wait a month and get one your only option will be scalpers or waiting a year.
Personally I thnk the used market might be pretty good after a while; scalpers are going to get owned by the 'I am a valve drone who bough this but I hate VR and regret it' purchases.

Fashion Club
Theme: Adventurer
Date: September 25

The Fashion Club is a newly started (hopefully recurring) meet focused on making outfits that aren't the standard casual, sexy, tactical, etc. The goal is to build a wardrobe full of great outfits that are not skimpy(without good reason), follow a theme, and that you'd want to wear anytime and anywhere, including public instances. The given themes will be very vague or broad, allowing club members to freely interpret their design based on a loose idea to prevent uniformity(like bunny suits or tactical gear). Meets are planned for possibly once a month, once every two months, or once a quarter.

The theme for this first meet is Adventurer, typically the medieval fantasy type but any interpretation is allowed as long as the first thought by anyone on seeing this outfit is without a doubt "that's an adventurer". Don't forget your weapons, your trinkets, anything you might need on a quest. Bonus points for interactive weapon gimmicks. It does not matter how you made the outfit, if you got an outfit on booth, kitbashed, the final result matters.

There is no contest(unless the people want one). Show up, show off, see what others have made, take pictures.

Anyone is free to join to show off or spectate, but there is one restriction on the final design:
- You must be mostly dressed and show no skimpy features(that means no chainmail bikinis).

Going by the rumor that it's going to FEEL like Index full kit price, I don't think it's going to be $999.
Adjusting for inflation, $999 in 2019 is going to be $1300 in 2026, so my bet it's $1200 or $1249.

It's not going to be more expensive than the Steam Machine, it'll either be within that price range, or a little bit cheaper for the 256GB (cheapest) option, versus The Machines 512GB (cheapest) option. And everyone else has said the same thing, the majority of hardware and features are similar to the Quest 3, a 3 year old headset, that makes it 3 year old hardware.
>>
>>580963054
If the steam frame isn't powerful enough as a standalone might as well use your PC to do the heavy lifting and use another headset if the steam frame costs as much as a mid tier gaming PC unless you got more money to burn.

>>
>>580965327
Look how much unsubsidized Quest 3 (business version), Quest Pro, Pico 4, Pico 4 Enterprise cost. Subsidized version litterally price dump, and hope to recoup on closed garden sales. That's why they are locked down consoles and not devices you fully own. Steam Frame is fully unlocked device you'll own. And the price is similar to business, unlocked versions of other headsets.
>>

PCVR is literally goku healing right now. Vibe coded VR Mods are launching so fast I can't notice them all. Every few days its "oh heres another one of your formative childhood hobby experiences in VR, btw I'm not a programmer". It's also all genres and all camera/perspective types and even games of antiquity are prey as long as its on PC. You can play pokemon red in VR, something I wouldn't even imagine people would try to do. AI makes the process so accessible and low effort there's basically no meaningful scarcity.

>if you're really that worried get one of those magnetic cables. i use my q3 tethered to the charger and have had 0 issues

I would be careful with this. I spent weeks autistically researching magnetic chargers because I got tired of plugging my quest in. There's no certified magnetic charger for USB. USB is also difficult and not designed to make a magnetic connection where nothing bad can possibly happen. Found instances of people showing their fried laptops. There's both painfully stupid connector designs and ones that look fine, but I'm not an expert. Some people claiming to be experts came forward and said not to buy this shit, but I can't tell if they were axe grinding autists or not.

Anyway I just wouldn't use it on a $1000+ device myself. I wish valve gave the frame the steam controller's magnetic system or made that enthusiast headstrap with hotswappable batteries. A magnetic charger would also be great for devs that would repeatedly stand up and sit back down.
>>
How about zucc get off his ass and make a quest 4 that's better than the frame so meta shills make sense instead of shilling a dated headset.
>>
>>580965327
Nah it's short of absurd, even with the component crisis you are getting something generally better than the index in almost every way and the price is the same. It's also better than the quest 3 in almost every way for PCVR, valve rounded the headset instead of making the panels better. Really the shame is the headset is too good to have basic bitch panels like that now.
>>
>>580973961
using a nemesis like an onahole...
>>
>>580974901
sir, this is the blue board
>>
>>580965515
AI is saving VR before it destroys the economy and the human race. VR was dying and not coming back, and now AI has made community work both powerful and abundant. I wouldn't make frame $200 or even $300 cheaper in exchange for deleting AI created VR Mods from existence. I don't even think I would take a frame for free having way less things to play on it.
>>
>>580974943
The nemesis I want to use goes to blue board instances.
>>
>>580965104
>>580965813
I have no doubt valve would raise the price and go back on "less than index". But I get this feeling they wouldn't save that information for order announcement day. The obvious thing to do was back during their updates about the crisis and delays they could've retracted the "less than index" claim, not saying its more expensive than index now, just say they are no longer sure enough to stick to that claim.

It's really unprofessional to go back on a aspirational promise, a date, a price, a feature, anything, and not mention the problem when you have the clear opportunity to do so. That's about as crazy as getting to release date just to announce you are postponing the release date.

It was first revealed that Valve started working on the Frame in around January of 2021.
So if we take January 1st as the start date and September 14th as the "release date" (or whenever lottery opens a few days later as the technical release date)
Then these past two weeks have lasted roughly around 2,082 days, which is around 69 months (nice), which is close to 6 years.

I get a ton of shaking that throws off my aim at times but I can't differentiate tracking jitter from my own natural hand trembling because Pavlov has so little motion smoothing that it picks it all up.

His comparison is backwards to shill his gunstock obviously but unless Steam Frame players are trained in telekinetics they're not going to be playing Pavlov with one controller unheld so I'd like to see a better comparison.

Honestly, it's actually less than I expected. But if you buy the accessories kit, which is mandatory, and something like insert lenses, that might go up to like 1188. Maybe add in tax and shipping, let's say 1200 easy. Which kind of gets to what I expected the price to maybe be.

So how much were you prepared to pay, and how much are you going to end up paying(or not paying if it ended up above your cut off)?
My absolute maximum was $1600 if I was getting 1TB AND it came with some extras.
But since 1TB is such insanely shit value over 256GB I'm getting that instead for $1210(with VAT included) + ergo kit for $75(unless aftermarket replacements are out when it actually goes up for order), so overall not too bad.

>>
>>580992518
I don't see how this is a problem.

You can buy a third party wireless mic and velcro it on.
For color passthrough they sell an official accessory
Speakers+hot swappable battery are coming with the enthusiast headstrap
They sell knuckle style straps for the controllers
You can get another tracker and attach that for syncing FBT

If you aren't poor you can afford all of that and attach it to the Frame with no problem.

and thats also ignoring the other things like ergos and controller grips for sweat etc etc

Dream air requires : New face gasket, New microphone, and a new headstrap. I put probably close to 200 extra into the $2000 price tag to make it as good as it is for me.

Foveated rendering has to be designed for each game to use.
Steam Frame uses foveated streaming. This doesn't necessarily help with preserving high refresh rates but helps for preserving high bitrate to where you're looking so streaming artifacts and such should be minimal.

The market for flight sim and gear and direct drive wheels is far smaller than VR. At worst headsets will just be slower to come out and more expensive. Most of your VR gaming will be mods of flat games. VR is here forever

VR will still probably be kept alive as a shambling corpse for VRChat gooners to fuck each other with, but the era of actual VR games will be over if the Frame fails.

The Frame will not do well.

It is extremely telling they delayed it 6+ months then released it quietly with no fanfare with 4 year old obsolete technology in it.

Everyone will see the Frame flop and it's already regarded as a weird niche coomer toy and not any actual medium for games. This will be the final bullet in the head.
>>
>>580997403
The frame will sell out but the market will continue to stagnate anyways. 98% of the headset purchases are for vrchat and that isn't going to change.

It's not a PC because it doesn't have an IBM-compatible BIOS or a UEFI-compliant ROM.

The real distinction is, does the device belong to you, or did you just pay to use a device that is really owned by some company?

This mostly depends on if you have root access to the device or not.
If you root a Meta Quest and Meta detects it, they will lock your account's access to the device, which effectively bricks you headset because you need a meta account to do anything with it.

If you can root the Frame and read raw data from the hardware etc. without the manufacturer putting up artificial hurdles or fucking you over like Meta, then I'd classify it as a user-owned device.

If you want it to be any good at standalone, especially x86 Windows games through 2 translation layers, you want the lastest and greatest. But then you'd also want an XR Snapdragon because it has dedicated cores for cameras and tracking to take off the load from the CPU. On the other hand, if you just want it to be for wireless PCVR, you can get by with a low end (but still preferably a new one for the latest graphics decoder) chip and like 4 gigs of RAM.
I guess another possibility for standalone would be one of thoss Intel/AMD chips for handheld PCs.

When I put the headset on it's passthrough + floating UI to connect to PC.
When I'm connected via VD it's my floating desktop window with passthrough and surprisingly I spend quite a non negligent amount of time with passthrough enabled. That a 3rd-party company managed to make a high-fidelity XR camera and space mapper add-on for a niche headset that is released in limited supply and charge ONLY $150 should be evidence enough of what I'm saying. That is including ALL of the overhead associated with developing the module, marketing it, running the company, manufacturing the module, developing the two apps to run the camera, etc. $150. That's insane.

Do you think the Quest Pro has a $150 module hidden inside of it for color passthrough? It's likely a tenth of that.

It already exists, you connect the headset to the PC with a USB cable. If you want a displayport connection, it's not happening.

Hard to say for the finger tracking without real world results, but the controller tracking should be fine.

I would absolutely not recommend buying an Index in nearly of the big '27 as your first VR device.

Genuinely the only two devices you should be looking at as someone new to VR are Quest 3 or Frame.
>But I don't need that standalone shit
Doesn't matter, practically no one here uses their Quest devices for standalone shit.
Everything is streamed from your computer to these devices.

Full Body Tracking is starting to hopefully move away from base stations (especially since they are now a dead technology) so I would not point to that as a reason to only get an Index when not only are alternatives coming out, but you can already do mixed full body tracking with Quest devices and Lighthouse FBT trackers.

It's not noticeable unless you are doing something extremely competitive to the point where every ms counts like competitive rhythm games or super srs shooters.
In terms of just general VR use though it's not like swinging your arms around is going to be noticeably lagging behind where you feel your actual arms are IRL.

Every reviewer has so far said the audio is worse, the Mic seems worse somehow, I can use my index indefinitely, (longer if I'm willing to tether controllers while using) while this lasts under an hour wirelessly, which is its entire selling point,
And this doesn't use or communicate with steam vr requiring you to treat a steam headset as a third party hybrid setup for tracking.
Unless you really care about the standalone flat gaming, this is sidegrade at best. Oh right, fov is smaller, refresh rate is lower by default pretty sure,

If you're doing anything that actually involves moving around much, wireless is nice to have, and unless your setup is pretty bad, I would argue you're not going to run into noticable latency even on a Quest 3 outside of some edge cases.
>>581015168
FBT is unfortunately pointless if you're not interested in VRChat, since you didn't list that, I wouldn't really worry about ease of use for that.
Skyrim and Boneworks would probably have you moving around more than you'd expect if you have the space I move around a bit playing those at least.
For what it's worth, if you're interested in a wired headset to try out VR, I have a PSVR2 I grabbed pretty cheap that I use specifically for sim stuff and that's been working pretty well for a cheap headset you just plug into your PC.

>wouldn't a wired headset strictly be better both for picture quality and latency?
Of course.
But we're talking about the difference here being like 40ms.

In terms of picture quality, the intent to solve that is Frame's wireless adapter that it comes with as well as foveated streaming (using the Frame's eyetracking, it detects where you are looking and gives that area extra attention for bitrate and such)
You're also getting better picture quality with the Frame anyway by default compared to Index because of the massive bump in resolution.

I’m gonna laugh if you don’t get a frame and are stuck with a camera

Clearly we should all be using 360 Hz monitors.

hmm
i checked and a new one is 437€ without the adapter but even with it it's like 500€ at worst
which is like less than half of the 256gb frame
uuuuhhh, maybe? a close friend/neighbor has a ps5 so at worst i could just sell it to him once i decide to get a proper headset
is the headset itself any decent?

buy a refurbished index
because apparently vr hardware was created before the dark age of technology and now we are back to google cardboard

>Valve likely made more 256GB ones.
This is why going for the 256GB one makes more sense.

>STEAM FRAME IS LITERALLY GOOGLE CARDBOARD
This may be peak hyperbole.

bu buuu, scalpers will think the same thing.

I'd try to check around for a sale or an open box headset if you can find one. Third party adapter has worked fine for me if you want to save a bit on that.
Headset itself is fine. Better displays/lenses than the Index. Headset tracking seems fine, but I don't use the controllers to tell there. Not as comfortable and audio is worse, but I think both are still fine (and both can be improved if you're willing to spend a bit more although I didn't feel the need to)

2-3 hours is average, most use power banks to get an extra 4 ish hours between swapping them out.
But 2 hours max in the lowest settings and 47 in the highest setting is absolutely abysmal. Even the Apple Vision Pro can get a full hour with all of its XR bullshit going on

Headset -$1059
Color passthrough -$150
Ergonomic kit-$60
Quality USBC Charger -$30
Charge packs to get decent battery-$50

To get a base level quest 3 experience you’re paying $1350, before any games.

A 512gb quest 3 with a free copy of gorilla tag is $599. Adding it all together you get the quest 3 with all the same accessories for less than half of what you’re paying or a Frame just to get the basic acceptable experience.

Frame is in the same price point as a pico, big screen, or even used Vision Pro and Galaxy XRs.

If this thing came out in 2024 and cost $600, even $700 it would be a no brainer. But at $1059 base price it’s the worst deal in VR right now.

You forget one thing: i'm not interested in Groomilla Tag, ya pedo gaijin

Yea, it works with WVRN or whatever the Linux thing is that's a pain in the dick. If you want the AVP but actually mostly just good to go for PCVR, it's the Galaxy XR from Samsung. It has it's issues, but it's the only thing that I personally think is a straight upgrade from the Q3 for PCVR outside of the occasional tracking issue because Google is way too focused on the AR glasses they're trying to get running AndroidXR to deliver a patch that the community could give them a simple checklist of things to add and fix.

The passthrough and hand tracking are better, and as much as people like to complain about horizon os, I guarantee you it’ll be better than the garbage SteamOS that will be on here. Virtual desktop alone mitigates nearly all of the horizon os problems anyway, you have zero reason to interact with anything besides turning on the headset and opening that up.

I’m always skeptical of valve hardware and I suspect quest might have better controller tracking. But time will tell.

Really though, every upgrade the steam frame has is minor, we’re talking a singular year cellphone upgrade. Technically better but not noticeably so. A quest 3 is new for $600, a frame is new for $1050.

Fresh sloppa, testing a mod for vtol that exposes the depth buffer for recording. watch me try to remember how to start up a jet, in 3d: https://file.hiina.space/rgbd-spectator/

Putting standalone capabilities aside, I don't think most gamers rigs can even do better than the Steam frame's display capabilities. Because of quest we've really been running on easy mode performance-wise
