I soured on the amount of optional dialog / scenes in Deltarune after chapter 5 because I realized they're not really allowed to matter. It's one thing to have fun scenes that flesh out the characters's personalities and interests. It's another thing to write shit like the Kris & Ralsei sauna scene or the prayer scene but make them optional thus making it so they can't contain any real development or story critical things, because it's possible for them not to happen. And it gets dumb to people to think shit that doesn't matter, does. For example Catti crying and running off. Does not need to happen in a playthrough. You can get through chapter 5 with Catti being completely unaware Noelle and Susie had a date.

I like mean characters who are kinda cruel with their jokes. I liked her character arc in chapter 1. It felt complete even if there was never a chapter 2 ever. There were enough hooks to keep me interested in the where the story would go, with enough growth of Susie's character to really feel like it mattered. On top of that we got to see, what felt like old friends. The Undertale cast. We also had no idea initially if it was a sequel, prequel, or alternative universe, or what. It was shadow dropped with no expectations. I could gush for hours. Some things are best experienced in their time. Some things are best experienced after their time. Chapter 1 was definitely the former.
