hey guys, i wanted your opinion on this game project ive been working on. its an evolution simulator, that plays just like the cell stage of spore but instead of working with a part editor you work with a gigantic trait tree that chooses how your creature evolves, all of the enemies are emergently created through navigating the trait trees themselves population by population, so it naturally makes ecosystems with prey/predator relationships.right now ive got the trait tree so that it goes through basic predatory adaptions, defensive ones, mobility, reproduction, and metabolism/lifespan; but since its the main way to actually get through the game there still needs to be way way way more done on it.right now i have:prey/predator relationshipssize affecting traits that let you scale your organism to any size big or small (assuming you can find the calories to sustain yourself)an entire branch of the trait tree for plant buildsdetritivores/herbivores/obligate carnivores or any combination of these (although it makes the food less efficient to stack more on)parasitic buildsa stealth/detection system that lets you scale your creature down to the point things cant notice itright now youre just looking at the sim state as a whole while i balance it and test it, the player loop hasnt even been touched yet. But i want it to just play like spore basically and naturally evolve into a more rimworld style colony sim once you have more sentient or at least gregarious traits.sorry for the animations and pictures looking dogshit. right now im just looking for general project idea feedback, cuz no one ive shown this to is interested in it at all lmao.crossposted from gamedev thread

>>581470756>somehow it never got popular as 2I think that's because you have to level up your city to get competitive. And also the card system is very weird, but once you get the hang of it, it get strong.>+10% infantry damage>+20% samurais damage>+33% siege damage>get samurai a personal mortarAnd suddenly your frontline infantry can murder buildings instantly with siege damage of 160. Ethiopeans are very hard to play because their units are shit, but fuck me I love their cannons. They probably have the most cannons variety, they have four different cannons and can get a fifth one.
The bronze cannons are couleuvrines. Don't ask me how they're called in English. They're anti-artillery.The massive one at the bottom left? It's the Sebastopol cannon. It's a MASSIVE mortar that can fire either cannonballs or bombs. The "normal" mortar is at >>581526675, at the bottom left. I didn't think I'd ever say that about a strategy game, but I think Age of Empires 3 gives you too many ressources too quickly. Maybe I'm bad (I likely am), but I always, very quickly, end up with thousands of ressources.Sure, they get dilapidated quickly, but they're also recovered quickly.
>>581561116shut the fuck up retard
>>581561816EEEEEEELVES
>>581561932Recommend the elf games.
>>581561965Age of the Ring if you like Battle for Middle Earth 2 but found it not autistic enough.Heroes of Annihilated Empire if you liked Cossacks 2 but wished it got elves bullying.Driftlands if you, for some obscure reason I won't judge you for (lie), you like strategy games where your entire economy collapses because you moved a slider to the left and weren't producing enough food, leading to societal collapse and losing to literally nobody.Otherwise, there are some turn-based games, like Warlock Master of the Arcane, Deity Empire, Fantasy Wars, the Heroes of Might & Magic, SOVL where you play elves, but I don't like turn-based games that much so I can't recommend one in particular. And then there are the Warhammer games: Total War, of course, but also Mark of Chaos, who has some high elves, and their American cousins, the evil Black Elves. And I guess kinda Dragonshard? Not much, though, the discount drows in this have their factions mixed with other abominations, like voidwalker, shadowlords, and various pimps. Not strategy, there is Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, a doujin game, surprisingly good. Then there are all kind of porn games, like Elfheim (only one chapter, though), Elven Conquest (not on Steam), and then various mobile games, like Dragon Crowd, Darkness Rises, Heroes of Incredible Tales, and a very obscure one called Tower of Doom, and its sequel, Chronicles of Mystara.
>>581561965Oh, and if you want to dislike elves, there are the fantasy defenses games, like Majesty (where elves literally abduct your son and ask for a ransom, and will fuck up your economy really badly if you let them build their brothels and casinos), and the later Lessaria, where elves aren't as hostile to you, but will still refuse to help you until you help them AND pay them. And also I guess Master of Magic and Lords of Magic? I dunno, elves in these are just units, not an entire race.
Oh, how could I forget Tabletop Tavern too? They're not in the Scouring, but I have hope they'll be added.
>>581551173>>581552091>>581552559That's literally a swiss style halberd tho, and the lads behind have bills.>Landsknechts are foot knightsNo, they're not.
>>581564710Isn't it what landsknechts means? Land Knight -> Foot Knight?
>>581564882I don't know a really good translation for Knecht, but it roughly means servant. Landsknecht -> Servant of the land (as in country). They're glorified man-at-arms really, and were frequently mercs too.
>>581564882No. Land is surprisingly also land, Knecht is a retainer or servant. They're better translated as state troopers historically in the context of them being from HRE even as mercs as opposed to being swiss mercs which they initially emulated in gear and tactics.
>>581564969>They're glorified man-at-arms really, and were frequently mercs too...isn't that what a knight is? A man-at-arm devoted to a feudal lord, sometimes working as an enforcer when his lord doesn't require his services?>>581565093>They're better translated as state troopers historicallyHa, I see....fuck kinda of state troopers has the mean and savoir-faire to equip their troops with two-handed swords? I was under the impression smelting a sword wasn't exactly easy.
>>581565253It wasn't. And vast majority of them didn't have those zweihanders. The ones that did were often signed up as doppelsöldners, paid double and tasked with disrupting the enemy pike formation. With those swords gradually falling out of fashion as guns became more popular and doctrine shifted. In short if you're not seeing ritter in the context of that period krauts it's almost certainly not a knight of any sort.A bardiche. I fucking swear. I'd assume you'd be familiar with swiss considering how much they were used by the french back then.
>>581565253A knight is a lower noble rank, landsknechts were commoners
>>581565253>>581565669Yeah, it's why "being knighted" was such a big deal. It was literally raising your social status in an official way. The title alone opened doors that were completely barred to you previously.
>>581565669Not necessarily of lower rank. Go by order of the dragon, plenty of its members were knighted kings or princes. A knight is just a noble of whatever rank sworn and or warranted under either a liege or a chivalric order to bear arms. Landsknechts were also not your run of the mill peasants either, serfdom was still a thing in HRE back then and these state troopers were recruited exclusively from free men. A tradition of sorts that continues with freikorps of prussia and later germany well up to post ww1. Funnily enough landsknechts did often have lesser nobles in their ranks, mercwork was very popular career option for a bastard or 3rd+ noble sons for example.
>>581565585>vast majority of them didn't have those zweihandersBleh. One more time, reality disappoints. One more time.
>>581567620It's not really a formation friendly weapon. Look at japs. No-dachi is cool but you can't hedge it like you could yaris. Also, you know, much cheaper and easier to make while doing a better job.
>>581567938I dunno, I won too many battles in Shogun 2 thanks to a nodachi charge to agree that a two-handed weapon is not good in a battle.I get that spears are better for militias as a way to start a military career, but I was under the impression you'd only move on from spears to more specialized polearms as you levelled up, like billhooks, long spear, pikes, halberds, or my schlong when I think about elves...
>>581566370>plenty of its members were knighted kings or princesYou can hold multiple tittles at the same time, high and low. Knight is just one of the lower tittles one could get, specifically for chivalric orders knight would typically be the lowest rank.
>>581568143I love shogun but that game is weird. The idea that you start spamming ashigaru and then progress to lategame pure samurai armies with almost everyone is quite literally the opposite of what happened. The lack of effective guns and pikes for more people is rather depressing as well.>I was under the impression you'd only move on from spears to more specialized polearms as you levelled upWhy would you?>>581568537You're thinking of 17-18th+ century chevaliers and esqs and such where being called a knight is just one more blue ribbon. In 15th century a knight is almost certainly a noble under arms and not a court dandy.>specifically for chivalric orders knight would typically be the lowest rankDepends on the order but in general? There are usually squire and such ranks below any knight proper.
>>581568972>You're thinking of 17-18th+ century chevaliersYou are the one referencing order of the dragon. It's a 15th century order and filled with court nobles and while some of those certainly did go to battlefields and maybe even used a sword they weren't like 11th century crusading knights expected to personally hold the line against Saracens or anything. >squiresThose aren't members.
>>581568972I can only hope that the remake of Shogun 2 will fix that meta. I get that spamming ashigarus with guns to overpower samurais is how it historically happened, but it doesn't make for a cool game where the starting unit carries you for 90% of the game and the cool samurais are limited in what they can do.Not to mention it gave me horrible habits for Warhammer that I took years to shrug off. No, keep 2-3 units of spearmen into mid then lategame is a horrible idea, they can't do shit against Archaon the Everchosen, Sarthorael the Everwatcher, Kholek the Sun-Eater, Sutekh the Destroyer, Hunter the Parenting, Hiroshimoot the Nuked, Sigvald the Bitchboy...
>>581569367>squires aren't membersDepends on the order and the period we're talking about. If we're talking secular ones like order of the garter or the order of the golden fleece then, no, they're not. Sometimes their squires (and even their wives) would have their lesser orders related to it to have some but clearly not equal prestige to, you know, the king and his inner circle, but squires in those orders usually didn't (and still don't) have the duties of earlier squires so there's that too. If we're talking (crusade era) monastic orders it gets a little muddier as non knight and non noble full members could serve as squires. Teutons, either half-brothers or fully pledged non-nobles for example or hospitaller or templar sergeants. Interesting topic.>>581569502I mean that's a different topic. If you're playing sp campaign you want the fanciest thing available condensed in the most powerful units available and lightning attack cheese him. But if you're playing sp or skirmish relative unit value is more important. Empire spears with shields are nothing to write home about but anti large+shield+decent model count can tie down significantly more expensive units and provide capture weight.

>>581667184Whats the point for what? The tunnels have a obvious purpose that is moving water without need to take a fucking mountain out, and it being at the bottom also has the advantage of carrying pressure. The point of my pic related, is that it works pretty much like a hydroplant, when the weight batteries drain, they will activate (by automation) giver more power to the waterwheels so it can replenish.
Finished a game in EL2. Don't know how to feel. Game has so many bugs/issues and oversights. Why can't I abandon a City? The only thing it got better than the original is the combat.

The divegrass team will be playing against /ddg/ (Dragon's Dogma General which is now on /vm/ I think) in the Very Genuine and Legit Vidya Game League tournament next weekend. The tournament is using a Swiss format so we'll facing opponents with a similar record to ours so we won't know the next match until after we play, but our opponents will be any of these teams. We're also the hat pick so we're going to be cursed this tournament. I don't know what day we'll be playing but I'll post once I know.

If I had to guess about 80% of my playtime in Stellaris is playing as hive minds, 15% playing as machine intelligences, and maybe 5% of my time has been spent playing “normal” empires. What does that say about me?
>>581725776You hate consumer goods
>>581725776you're missing out on like half the game's content
>>581725776Hives and machine intelligence are just more appealing to me too. They have a stronger fantasy and feel stronger to play too.
>>581722221>no monument in the middleMissed opportunity.
>>581728142I love hives because they’re surprisingly versatile. If you use the right build you can totally play as a “tall” hive, and if you load in as a peaceful hive but get surrounded by genocidals you can just reform into being more military focused as opposed to loading in as a pacifist/xenophile and just being cucked. Not to mention the weird bullshit diplomacy that comes from normal empires where you can play as an authoritarian and spawn next to democratic crusaders who won’t give you a chance at diplomacy, or loading in as pacifists next to honorbound warriors who will make it their goal in life to kick the shit out of you. As a hive if you’re chill everyone gets along with you just fine
Anyone here playing EL2? And if so, I could really use some advice in regards to when I should be settling a new city, or just attaching territory. Currently I am mainly playing Kin of Sheredyn, but even then I am unsure if I should plop down my second city asap, or focus more on attaching territory to my capital
>>581733829Sorry, I don't play halfbaked dogshit games.
>>581676605Bringing back stacks and/or battle resolve ending in one units destruction in a single turn (besides retreating) would be mandatory, then.
>>581733829I rarely settle new cities. Settling them earlier is better, but my capital always ends up as a megacity regardless. Whether or not it makes sense to settle a new city depends largely on the shape of the territories you have and the distance of the camp from your existing cities, although I say this based on personal preference. There's no hard rule here, either: It depends entirely on the context of the map in your session. Typically in my games, territories don't get attached if they're too far away and/or a "natural boundary" exists between them and my city, at which point I found a new city if I don't want to wait for a region that might make a more centralized city center. I doubt the way I do it is even optimal, but it's the way that makes the most sense to me since it's working around the game's bad map generation.
>>581743061>game's bad map generation.Glad to hear I'm not the only one thinking this. I keep restarting games and trying out new factions. But so far almost every single map has been terrible it feels like. The AI also manages to settle the new ones as soona s they appear, I honestly think they even know the yields before the whole territory is revealed, they keep claiming territory with only a few tiles revealed, and it's making it hard to keep up
>>581733829Alternatively, you can play Necrophages or their rogue variant to attach everything to your capital and not have to worry about founding new cities.>>581744504I'm pretty sure they're just programmed to indiscriminately colonize anything that's uncolonized ASAP. If I don't take a garbage region adjacent to only my territory that's just a small sliver of tiles with only 2 colonizable because there's somehow minor faction villages, anomalies, resource deposits, etc. blocking the other 4 tiles, an AI will beeline through my territory just to colonize this shit region. Aspects AI are the worst offenders of this because they actively try to sign NAPs and open borders treaties with you.
>>581733829I always try to get a second city out ASAP in order to start growing pops and building some improvements. Geodesic domes and scriptoriums are responsible for a lot of your early science and influence and they don't need a lot of production to get going. If a region lacks something it can be fixed by attaching a better territory later. Only real requirement is having enough room for a triangle of districts around the city center. Unless you're the Lords in which case you need a way to generate dust.
>>581745615It's a little weird for me in regards to the Necrophages, I prefer tall factions, but I don't enjoy having to play so aggressively, they sort of have some of my favorite things and most disliked things going for them at once. But I'll try them soon, maybe I'll enjoy them. But so far the way the map generates and the super aggressive AI settling have really taken the wind out of my sails. I really hope that the devs change something so they won't just settle a new region before it's at least 50% revealed and not just a collection of three tilesIn general do you even bother about the initial regions? Or should I just focus on the new ones due to the much better yields and resources in general? While tidefall is a cool mechanic, I feel like they fucked something up on a base level in regards to how you are supposed to expand, having most of the early tiles being downright worse, just makes me feel bad about claiming them, and attaching them to my capital or another city just feels like a bad play
>>581747620Thanks bro. Lords are my favorite faction by far, but I haven't played them since the full release since I wanna get a feel for all the factions... But I already miss the dosh lords.Tahuk's have been incredibly weird getting used too, their early science is great, but holy fuck they lack in all other regards, their spawning region is also quite fucked due to the overabundance of cliffs, so it feels hard developing a city and leveling up the districts
>sit down to play some stellaris>spawn next to thisYour honest to god reaction?
>>581747981I've played some Tahuk games, I know your pain...
>>581747730>I really hope that the devs change something so they won't just settle a new region before it's at least 50% revealed and not just a collection of three tilesPart of the issue with this is a lot of regions will end up with >50% of their tiles as inaccessible lake tiles after the final tidefall, often resulting in badly-shaped regions remaining as badly-shaped regions. In general do you even bother about the initial regions? Or should I just focus on the new ones due to the much better yields and resources in general?Always settle your starting island at the very least. It doesn't matter if the yields are worse. There's nothing wrong with leaving outposts around if you're indecisive about attaching or founding cities. I usually try to get a second city started on my initial island, not long after first tidefall if not as soon as possible.
Also a reminder that you can't abandon a city in EL2 if you misclick or occupy a fortress by mistake, which will fuck you over in happiness. Learned it the hard way when I was taking over territories from the AI thinking they would be camps if I occupied them. More evidence the release was rushed.
>>581747730cont.>While tidefall is a cool mechanic, I feel like they fucked something up on a base level in regards to how you are supposed to expand, having most of the early tiles being downright worse, just makes me feel bad about claiming them, and attaching them to my capital or another city just feels like a bad playThere's three factors feeding into this:>bad map generation>tidefall implementation (partial territory reveal, as opposed to whole)>camp placement and city attachments being permanentInstead of changing either of these, they gave submerged tiles better yields to encourage expanding back in ~May 2025-ish. Players weren't expanding much and Amp decided to try to incentivize it with better FIDSI, iirc. If just one of the above issues I listed were actually addressed, it wouldn't feel nearly as bad to put up with the other two, but that's just my opinion.
>>581725282VGL friendlies were announced for the second and fourth weekends in October. If you guys want to see the team play any of the teams in this list, let me know and I can try to schedule a friendly against them.
>>581755293Is Xenophile in?
>>581756612Not in VGLVGL since that tournament explicitly forbids gacha or VN players. I had removed her from the team aesthetics but I still have her model and can re-add it for a friendly/ies.
>>581757039Well, technically her name isn't a gacha since you have only one character, but yeah, that's splitting hair.
>>581754258Allowing you to remove and redeploy your camp should have been a possibility from day one, make it cost some influence to remove to balance it. I really hate how Anti-player it feels not being able to move your camp's the AI won't give a fuck about that, it's already cheating to begin with, instead it just punishes players for not wanting to slap down a camp on some random tiles PRAYING that RNG won't fuck you over when the rest of the region get's revealed. >>581753636I usually try to get at least my second city up and running before the first tidefall too. But I'm really starting to dislike how it feels like you have to plop down camps in every single region to not give it all up to the AI. I wish playing Tall was more viable in general in Endless legend... I hate taking shitty territory just because I can, and I'm handicapping myself by not doing it
