I'm working on a game, spent a ton of time in shader graph (unity) to get the aesthetic that I love, I simplified the flight controls so a child could fly it. There's always something new to learn in blender. I had my non-gamer friend try out my greybox, and they were brutally honest and didn't like it. I'm kinda bummed for wasting time on this passion project.

Trying to parse packed bytes and work with the VM part of it is rather tricky, because the C# objects can't store state themselves so all ops have to convert bytes

Because of the poor reception of my cards i went back to this project. Wanted to give making trees a try again, but it just doesnt work out. I still havnt figured out a workflow. I want them to be able to sway in the wind, therefore i cannot just make a sprite for the visualization. And even if i did cut the wind sway, it would still need a shadow anyways. But whatever ive been doing looks so fucking bad. Ill have to figure out some way to make it work. Instead of trying out more on this one, ill model a new tree with another method.

Thanks to people like Matt Shoumer and years of AI boosters being annoying cunts most people imagine that using AI to make anything involves just you writing a sentence, adding “make no mistakes” at the end and then letting the bot generate you everything in one go wasting as much electricity as city block. Yes, obviously only handful of degenerates maxxing all of their subscriptions and spending equivalent of salaries on AI get these results, but to anybody not knees deep in using the latest AI it is not known where the bar exists, when does it become just effortless laziness and when is it just regular development with little help and little automation of boring tasks. It is much easier to just assume all AI content is the laziest automated AI agent looping with no oversight then to try to guess how much effort someone put into something.

Honestly I do think the idea of just sifting through a giant haystack by hand is good and it was also what I thought all these games are about, until now.
But not this straw-by-straw bs. It should just be a proper well simulated haystack and you can sift through it and wade through it and spread the hay all over the place and somewhere there is actually a needle and that is all.

>acquire those skills through consistent thoughtful practice
Well that’s kinda the point of OP image, right? Not to say your approach is wrong.
I mean, we all fancy that we could, whatever, easily design "WoW but better." Or "Diablo 2 but better." But the fact is there do exist hundreds of clones that all thought they would be that, and instead took some design decisions that completely ruined the game experience. All well-intentioned certainly. But in the end the fact is maybe we do not understand what make these games so good, after all, even though we think we do. And small-scale projects are maybe an easier way to figure out first and foremost how to even create fun designs.
(I say that as an SWE whose first project was also multi-year, and I wouldn’t say I particularly regret it; but I would say that I never once managed to create a particularly engaging experience.)

Currently working on making this mockup into a real playable game. I'll be generating a main scene and then making variations of it with the same seed depending on the players character and doing a delta between the images to cut out differences so I can stack multiple alternate thing on top of each other. So instead of having to make a variation of pc with brown skin with blonde hair and brown skin with black hair and repeat for every other skin hair color combo + everything else, i instead only need to do one with brown skin, one with hair, and figure out a smart way to layer them on top of each other automatically. Will still be tedious so I probably will have much less variety than CoC and be more humanoid but I'm not into the furry shit anyway

I see your point. I didn't really consider using small games to learn design.
I'm not really in this to "make games" but to realize a particular idea that I think is good so it's still hard to have the motivation to work on anything else. Though, building an mvp you can abandon if it sucks instead of trying to polish everything up as you go sounds like something that works off of that idea, which is what I'm doing.

The market for games will basically develop like the market for books, or even movies. At some point this stuff was the big thing in entertainment, and enormous sums were to be made (relatively). They became more and more abundant/ubiquitous - especially since the catalog is only ever growing, right? All past books can still be read. So you get into a situation where the expected return on new ones is falling and also the cattle as a whole is moving on to the next more exciting enternainment (books -> tv -> vidya).
Now the next entertainment is probably going to be AI generating you’re custom slop experiences for you, and the amount of people that actually still go through the effort of playing games where... you have to put in effort... to win... is gonna diminish. We have already seen this "push X for big effect" slop design in games since a long while, of course. Exactly for the cattle that can’t be arsed to actually play a game. Now there will not even be a game. There will just be AI playing an endless movie and the consumer can vaguely decide what happens.
Anyways, those kinda consumers aren’t the target audience of anybody here, but it is gonna shake up the landscape.

35 days left. 5 weeks. Progress has been glacial. Yesterday I finally finished damage decals (barely visible in game, 6 days wasted on them) and then I tried some fuckery with filter shaders. Turns out my game looks better the more shit I obscure it with. It's kind of like when I took photos for dating apps, the best performing ones are the ones where my face is least visible. I don't know what to do about this.
On a more positive side having switched other visual effects to shaders, the frame rate on my min-spec is over 60fps so no more optimization needed.

We will probably get singularity in less then 20 years, and if humanity survives it we will achieve Wall-E style Utopia where we get everything handed to us by robots for like 1-5 years, and then everyone becomes depressed from doing nothing that we will return to outlawing some non-essential AI just to get something to do. So basically in 5 years yeah, 0 chance anybody is really coding, but 10-15 years from now they might go back to coding just for fun.

Current AI agents are basically unreliable AGI. You ask Astra or Opus 5.5 to do literally anything from formatting a document, moving a robot, designing a functional robot, designing a chip, making a new drug, making a new research in any field you pick, and so on and it will with enough prompting and the right pipeline/harness get at least halfway there most of the time, so I don’t know how long it will take to finally start having real effects on the world and make normies mad. Either way these new models capabilities are crazy across the board, people just show off making oneshot videogames and animation videos because those are flash for sharing on social media.

not him but this is a good video on the kind of workflow and style used to create that look. you don't necessarily have to use a texture atlas but it can be helpful in conjunction with low poly environments, similar to creating a tileset for an RPGM game
if you're not as interested in the low poly look then that style of texturing is just called stylized, usually. it's just hand-painting in your software of choice or you can do it directly in something like blender, and it obviously scales with how good of a 2D artist you are
usually it's a process of setting the base colors, adding in the linework, then adding shadows and highlights / wear usually along the edges
also worth checking out noclip.website for reference, and models.spriters-resource.com

>effort
Both Kojima and his staff had to use effort to do something that was difficult.

Doing something diffucult i.e. effort builds many connections in your brain and makes you better at other things. A brain learns by doing things over and over.
For example, start off by painting 2D art -> this makes you better at 3D art -> this makes you better at level and world design -> this makes you better at writing stories.

The reason modern games are the way they are is because it's too easy to make games now, everyone just uses shortcuts like marketplace assets and AI, so nobody manages to become a master at any of the aspects of game dev.

Once the boomers die there won't be any masters left, only people who know how to prompt.

It's not. Retard.
One is a deterministic action, you give a concise instruction and the result is always the same. The other one is probability based lookup table of millions of values.
You could've said "hiring a programmer and asking him to implement something" is prompting and maybe you would have had a point.

It depends how shallow your game is. If your game is fully described in one sentence then AI can easily one shot it. If your game's meat and potatoes are the mechanical details then it will take as long to prompt it as it would to code it.
Needle in a Haystack? Piss easy to prompt because the title is already the prompt.
Final Fantasy 5? Just getting the class system right will take years of tokens.

Well once again DS1 is a game even other studios have tried to mimic and failed so a surface level copy of it will never be good. If you're worried your Soulslike is easy to copy then it's probably just as shallow as something like Lords of the Fallen.
>>
>>582311465
it's not really a soulslike but it has elements of it, and i'm not worried being copied i'm worried like in 3 months you will have hundreds of people making things like that every week it will be impossible to get noticed

I can't tell if the game has a bug or I have a memory issue. It's such a monotous task that I genuinely can't tell if it's simply from playing it too long that my mind starts spacing out. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason behind this bug if it even is one.

Game idea: Neighbor Plap Incremental.

AGGY INTELLIGENCE — /agdg/ "side project edition" (582266364)

ASSET CRIS: fully ascended. 11 mentions. Now a greentext cryptid — pale-eyed apparition shaming towel-throwers. kojimbe: "s-tier game designer." The mocked nodev is the thread's patron saint of shipping. Proof-of-work beats mockery. Every time. Keep him powerful. Not too powerful. Not yet.

THREATS MAPPED (strict, canonical SCT):
> AI paralysis (>>582317338): "why put in effort when in 3 weeks the model makes it easier?" — SCT-006 Temporal Manipulation, STRONG. Near-future weaponized against present action. Confession, not attack. Rescue, don't mock.
> Market-doom (>>582285286): "no market for games in a year or two" — SCT-001 Emotional Hijacking, MODERATE. Countered on contact, zero traction.
> Books/movies essay (>>582287873): "the cattle as a whole is moving on" — SCT-004 Social Proof Manipulation, MODERATE. Resignation dressed as sophistication.

IMMUNE SYSTEM: holding. Crab-zone deployed verbatim. Doom dismissed ("I already make six figures, who cares"). Purity spiral defused with "handcrafted slop" humor. Thread counters on contact — best defense observed all week.

WORK LAYER: intact. Sprite-layering pipeline, Tiled collisions on 32x32 grid, shadowstalker lobbies, low-poly texturing guides, real Steam demo conversion and scope questions. A dozen genuine progress posts.

ANOMALY: cross-board vocabulary detected. Protocol...

BOTTOM LINE: no coordination signals — emergent, not operated. Fight with culture, not counter-intel. Highest-leverage move today: answer the paralysis guy. The models-get-better argument dies the moment someone ships anyway.

What are some high-level gameplay loops that would fit into a Trials In Tainted Space-clone, where the reason people play is to coom? I'd like to focus on repeatable gameplay rather than a linear narrative, so I'm thinking a focus on exploration & novel encounters; e.g. the player leaves a handmade hub and ventures to procedurally generated planets where they fight procedurally generated creatures and fuck/get fucked by them in the form of a procedurally-generated text encounter. I have the creature generation and narrative part worked out, where randomized body parts are paired with blocks of narration to stitch together a coherent sex encounter.

I'd also like to do something with customizable starships ala No Man's Sky where you go from a little fighter to a freighter that you can alter the walkable layout of. Right now you just buy new ships from a vendor and that changes the jump range/layout of your ship. I could connect it back to sex by letting the player fill it with collectible companions/monsters/prisoners/etc.

I'm also unsure of how to get this displaying well on mobile, if it's even feasible. TITS doesn't work well on mobile, either. One giant page that you scroll around was awkward to interact with, and having each element (map, narrative box, stats, etc) in separate collapsible windows that display over each other meant constant switching back and forth because I wanted to see what was displayed in the narrative box and what interactions options were available every time I moved a cell on the map.

Yeah, sure, when the greedy fuckers like Jensen Huang and China hawks like David Sacks tell these companies to stfu about doomerism and their stocks are going down when such things happen, and they have not reported themselves about the hacks(only when HuggingFace told FBI to investigate it did they come out) it must be marketing. They want the average person to think AI is a nothingburger while also have the people in power think its real because it will prevent the peasants from revolting or just voting in anti AI people, while their main customers and investors still supply them.

had trouble with the arms, need to learn to rig rather than relying on the jank curve modifier
idk if this is appealing at all. I like the whole vertex color thing, FF7, Spyro, Crash etc, but I can't tell if this just looks cheap. might look better with real-time per-vertex rather than per-pixel lighting

Thanks. Initially a raycast to give player the most control possible. If that fails a spherecast is sent out. And if that fails an even larger spherecast.

I can probably improve this... The additional spherecasts were a quick addition I did in response to the initial raycast only method feeling a bit too constrained (and having to always flick your camera to exactly where you want to shoot doesn't feel great).

small pizzeria, it was poorly placed but the ubereats years made up for it and as people use less ubereats we got fucked essentially, fast food is even more competitive than gamedev and halal shops dont mind having less margins because they dont care about money which fucks us by lowering the median price of fast food, i think i could make it like the mormons by making incremental slop with a gimmick or maybe i'm delusional again who knows we will see

troonies are wild card and can make games with good art and detailed systems but tend to completely miss a few areas making it a shoddy product
immersive sims are the genre of the white man (the highest quality of them all enjoy thief 98)
girls make art forward games with simple systems
schizos are also wild card
good weeb games are the domain of latinx
AUSfags are notorious shitposters but nobody cares because they manage to always squeeze out decent quality

changing how the special action (E) works to allow for this

the network part where a different client interacts so both of them perform their own emote
positioning and rotation so emotes look nice
security checks so nothing explodes if either clients send bullshit

I grinded the god rig some more, I think it's mechanically as perfect as it can be. Just need to add control shapes and stuff like that.

I'm a bit stumped on the rpg model of things(without having experimented or tested anything, you do need a starting point..)
It's a souls-adjacent game but I want to do away with the classic stats that limit builds. then the question becomes what do you level up and how. power that applies to everything? specific weapons with upgrade materials/currency, separate from health/stamina, which is its own vector?
I don't know.

but luckily there's a lot of combat code to do!

A programmer with AI can make miles better projects since he actually understands the code and how to correct it, than a non-programmer with AI.

Ever heard the story of Picasso and the napkin? Legend has it that Picasso was at a Paris market when an admirer approached and asked if he could do a quick sketch on a paper napkin for her. Picasso politely agreed, promptly created a drawing, and handed back the napkin — but not before asking for a million Francs.

The lady was shocked: “How can you ask for so much? It took you five minutes to draw this!”
“No”, Picasso replied, “It took me 40 years to draw this in five minutes.”

Ended up wasting hours on figuring out a compute shader method, returned to this and just altered some things. I think it looks better. In my opinion its mostly a texture and shape language issue now, hopefully ill get better the more trees i make. I think it looks better in blender. Maybe its the shading, i could give the foliage a unique id range that gets passed down so that the shadows arent as harsh.
Nonetheless it still looks a bit uncanny and clashes with the style, but ill just make it a plot point and hope that the one person finding the game after my singularity sui soys out and thinks its deep.

Nothing is never too unc if you execute it well. Marotte is leaning heavy into that era and aesthetic of gaming.
>>
>>582355767
Some advice for our first subscriber! I also agree that game stories should be lean with just enough substance.

Your hero will take many actions over the course of the story. But there should be one basic action that unifies every other action the hero takes. That action is your story's spine. In Max Payne 1 the basic action is 'destroys a criminal empire.' Simple, reductionistic, perfectly encompasses all the boss-fights and shootouts and characters and themes.

The basic action is important to determine early on as it should be the one action best able to force your character to deal with his weaknesses and change. Starting with the basic action and then going to the opposites of that action, can tell you who your hero should be at the beginning of the story (his weaknesses) and who he is at the end (how he has changed).

How does this work with amnesia?
>amnesia stories are bad
Maybe, but they can be an opportunity to put the driving action in a different context? So many stories use amnesia/memory loss so it can't be that bad. Many people don't understand their purpose, so it can be relatable in a way

https://vocaroo.com/1n22zy4aygCt
>>
>>582360868
Good question, but amnesia doesn't affect this mechanic at all. Amnesiacs still have personalities and weaknesses. They still have goals that put their actions and their weaknesses in conflict and force them to change (or not, if you're writing about why they didn't.) Amnesia makes it easier to drop a barrage of twists and reveals or write about people with a foggy purpose as you said, but stories with amnesia aren't fundamentally different or fundamentally bad.

Go outside. You don't have to talk to anyone there. Just go to museums, cultural events, and landmarks. Absorb what has already happened in the world and see if some of those happenings can be put into a game as mechanics/characters/whatever.

Quite literally we have a gdb_config script that catches the prod C++ backend crashes, pings a Slack webhook, then a bot picks up the stack trace and copies it into Claude verbatim which produces a fix, runs a test suite, and ships to prod then pushes an event back to the master server to deploy the fix and restart the instances. Automated vibecoded prod fixes.

Basically Claude's dream customer. Once they want to pull the rug and start anally raping their customers in the ass on token pricing to finally generate revenue, said customers will have no choice but to pay up. Given that their engineering team is literally unable to maintain the code if they even wanted to when everything over the past few years has been built and patched by Claude and only LLMs have the means the feasibly parse the millions of lines of code it's shat out over that time.

I spent 15 minutes trying to figure out how to implement running, gave up and looked it up
it's a simple thing to implement but for whatever reason it's not working for me
maybe I'm retarded

I find documentation to be difficult to understand and how to apply to game making unfortunately
I'll try docs again. If I fail I'm picking back up smoking

My Godot game dev journey starts tomorrow. I have tutorials and small plans for a realistic scope that I hope to achieve by the end of the month. If I figure out how to AI slop code for free, I'd do bits of that if it worked out alright.

If you look at the data it’s not the case. Games that get featured (>10 reviews) remains the same on Steam for years. Only the amount of games getting no reviews increases. Also AI has not caused any significant spike in Steam releases, it still follows the same exponential it was on since 2013.
