I've always found the way so many Halo fans treat Master chief like some deep, complex messianic batman/superman/goku figure amusing and confusing. In the 3 bungie games he says fuck all and saves almost no human he interacts with. He's basically just the OG doomguy (and ironically he got the same flanderization).

He makes an attempt whenever it comes up. Chucks a marine into the escape pod, Halo (level) is nothing but attempts at saving marines, saves marines and Keyes from the T&R, temporarily saves random groups of marines in AotCR near the first hog and tank. Pulls marines out of the High Charity prison zone, most of Crows Nest is trying to save marines.
Chief is on the offensive in most of 2 and 3 and marines don't have a good life expectancy on the best of days so it doesn't come up much in those. Deep he is not, but he's a solid hero character. Eh kills aleins and doesnt afraid of anything to keep the rest of humanity from destruction.
