I've just finished Chapter 2 of Mother 3. It's okay I guess? I'm not feeling what's the big deal about this game. I think the biggest downer so far is the style, unironically. I can feel the whimsical parts more in the dumb silly enemies but much less so in the comedy as the dialogue is full of "look at this thing, it's so weird but we treat this normally, or something normal isn't here, and that's fine." Toby's games have done a way better job at this imo. Other jokes are full of anime-isms that don't land to me like Wess yelling at Duster or the Magypsie stuff. The game is bold to tell a story about this varied cast of imperfect people and that's cool, I liked the plot with Flint's family so far, less so with Duster and none of the tag alongs who did stuff but weren't party members. Tazmilly is a weird place that doesn't come off as charming to me, but more like an uncanny sort of video game town that doesn't feel real or within the context of a proper big world. Hoping it gets better.
