Hard to believe niggas back then, and to this day, still conflate the term "P2W" with being able to skip some of the grind by paying. P2W was always about paying for something that was exclusive that nobody else had any access to, which gave you a clear and decisive advantage over other people. P2W would've been been like being able to buy the valve rocket launcher which was exclusive from the store. The polycount sets weren't P2W because they were available via trading, crafting, and drop. The set bonuses they gave were also incredibly lackluster (save for one or two), and forced you into using that specific item set, which everyone could see you were using. The only problematic one was arguably the sniper set which allowed you to survive a headshot (or whatever it was), but which in turn forced you to use the sydney sleeper and danger shield. The argument could also be made for the spy set which made your cloak nearly silent, if not for the fact that you had to use the pre-buff YER, which didn't let you use your disguise kit at all. Even that wasn't strong because of the set bonus, it was strong because of the pre-nerf dead ringer making you practically immortal, with no cooldown to speak of.
