I've been playing it a bunch again, this time with mods. Currently in the mountains. I really like the world modifiers they've added, getting 2x ore makes the grind a lot better. Getting tons of bronze has always been a pain in the ass, and don't get me started on spending an entire evening filling up a longship with iron.

I think the game phases kind of balloons in length right after moder. The shift to plains is huge. It more or less requires a whole new base, since you need to farm crops and tame animals specific to there. It's one thing to have to go far to find swamps and iron. Its another to fully transfer a base, or to build a whole new one, especially in an area where mosquitos rip new assholes frequently

I think it's less to do with building a new base in the plains (you can just portal all the crafting stations and upgrade station mats, and it's not too hard to spawnproof a plains peninsula), but finding a yagluth vegvisir and enough totems to summon him. That stonehenge shit that's supposed to tell you where his altar's at is so needlessly rare, and since the plains generate in a giant ring, you have to essentially sail the circumference of your world to find the damn thing. I keep trying to find comfy playthroughs of the game to watch for my valheim fix since my friends dropped it due to boredom trying to find yagluth clues, and wouldn't you know it, they keep dropping it as soon as they get situated in the plains

The trick is to play with a friend and have one of you harpoon the other, then one can fill their inventory with ore while the other pulls them up slopes

It's really easy to get a whole lot of nothing done, isn't it? I spent a couple hours yesterday hunting trolls on the coastline when I intended to go find a swamp, but then realized I spent all my copper on crafting station upgrades, the boat, buckler, carts, sword, and the axe instead of making a single fermentation keg. Now I have to go through the grueling process of mining another vein of copper

Yeah, I spent my last session demolishing my walls and spikes in order to upgrade to stone and get a larger area so I could fit a workshop next to my house. Ended up fucking off on a ship instead to look for mistlands while my house was undefended.
Mining copper ore might be the worst part of the whole game for me. It takes way too long and you get so much more stone than ore. It was fun the first time I used a troll to mine but now it's just tedious. I'm never playing the early game again without at least 2x resources enabled in the world settings.

I'm fine with the stone since I can just portal it back and use it later for base building, it's just the copper veins are so fucking huge but 90% of them are underground, so if you want the whole thing you have to basically excavate around the entire perimeter down to bedrock. Doesn't help that 99% of the time the vein itself is also embedded into the bedrock, so you can't even destroy it in one go by making it float like you can with silver. You have to shave off the bottom 30% or say fuck it and just carve it into more manageable pieces, which still have a bunch of terrain clipped inside. This isn't even mentioning the almost constant harassment of greydwarves even if you put up fires, which they'll just break by throwing stones or getting a brute to do it

At least you can set up a bench to repair your pickaxe under the slab.

I always pick the copper vein that's the highest from the water table, and end up digging out a small hidey hole where I put a bed and workbench and chest eventually. But I also am super particular about bronze usage to never have to repeat the process. No copper armor, only the necessary tools and nails, and the buckler and usually the mace but sometimes I skip that

I honestly love the swamp because of its atmosphere. The melancholic music and undead everywhere really sets the tone. The crypts suck, but the rest of the biome is kino.
People struggling with Moder always baffled me, always seemed like one of the easiest bosses to me. Are you using health and stamina mead? What gear are you using? What about food?
Silver gear is much easier to get and upgrade than iron gear, because you can fully excavate a silver vein and pop the whole thing in one go. And each one gives you a good amount of ore. A fully upgraded fang spear is only 8 silver, and it does excellent damage. The sword is amazing but takes a fuckload of ingots to fully upgrade. Draugr fang has always been a metafag bow thanks to its good damage and poison effect.
For food, you should be farming onions by now so you have access to onion soup for stamina and wolf skewers for health. Last slot I normally just use sausages.
For her attacks, everything she does while on the ground is highly telegraphed and can be parried with an upgraded iron shield. You won't get the parry bonus damage but at least you negate the attack. Her most dangerous attack is the icicle breath she does while in the air. Most of the time you can avoid it by just running to the side, but drink frost resistance mead just in case to reduce the damage. It also makes random drake attacks less annoying. Be sure to bring at least a couple stacks of obsidian arrows, she has a ton of health so you'll run out quickly.

Oh so you meant Bonemass, alright. That one is a pain in the ass if you're not prepared, but trivial if you bring the right equipment, meaning poison resistance mead and a mace. He's resistant to slash and pierce damage so blunt and frost are the only good options. On new runs I often skip him until I have frostner. You can find silver pretty easily without the wishbone by just hitting the ground with a stagbreaker and looking for text that says "too hard".

bonemass really is just an endurance fight, so I'd recommend using poison meads instead of the root mask since the mead has strong poison resistance, whereas the root mask only has minor resistance.

I'd also recommend making/using iron maces at least upgraded to lvl2 since he's weak to blunt, and bringing along an upgraded stagbreaker or iron sledge to deal with the slimes he spawns.

Other recommendations I have are to have a portal built nearby on top one of those giant unbreakable fallen logs in case one of you needs to go get your rested bonus again, or heal (you regen much faster when "resting".

Also, try to level the area around the boss spawner with a hoe a little bit so you aren't stuck wading through waist deep water if you need to run away.

Like the other anon said too, try to use the best foods you have; personally I use sausages, serpent stew, and onion soup.

You can kinda also try to drag him onto a bonfire for a little extra damage as long as you keep it repaired, I guess? It'd require a lot of micromanaging imo

Unless you use mods to disable water damage wooden structures are fucked. A roof would protect the walkway planks but the pillars in the water will still decay over time. Waves will eventually damage the walkway too even if it's under a roof. It stops at 50% health so your dock will never be destroyed by water, but it will look ugly.
Stone, black marble and grausten don't take water damage, so those are your best options.

Never done that myself but I suppose you should try to connect areas with paths and make road signs. Make landmarks to orient yourselves. Build your bases near the coast so that if you get lost while sailing you can hug the coast and find your way back.

Tried magic for a change and I gotta say this shit sucks ass compared to going unga bunga with a krom.
Melee can parry and oneshot seekers while mages need to use most of their eitr to deal with a couple of them, and if they get hit once they're fucked unless they constantly keep their protection bubble active, which takes a large chunk of health and eitr to use anyway, meaning you spend most of the fight running around waiting to get more eitr so you can actually attack. Ice staff is nice for crowd control I guess, but that can be done with frost arrows anyway.

Log trolls are much easier to use for mining, the unarmed ones are shit because the horizontal swipe almost always misses, so only their slam works consistently.

I think it's much better that they take their time rather than rushing out buggy garbage like every other early access game. I'm at almost 1k hours played now and I can only think of a couple instances of buggy shit happening to some dropped items, and that was in multiplayer.

The wisp removes so little mist that you honestly could just say fuck it and go in there without one. It could really use a buff to its radius. Even 3x larger radius would still feel somewhat small. Same with the wisp torches.
Mistlands overall is a kinda shit experience desu. Seekers hit too damn hard for an enemy that frequently swarms you, so soloing the biome is fucking aids. The terrain doesn't help, it's too steep and you need a decently large and flat area to fight anything unless you use a mod that lets you attack up and down, which really needs to be implemented in the base game already. Fighting on slopes straight up doesn't fucking work.

Real efficiencyfagging requires making specific wings of your main building, and having things like the garden next to the cooking, the metal processing between the docks and the main storage, and the crafting in easy access to the main storage, but also the main portal room and comfort room for easy repairs. It's a great game but there is no real endgame. Me and my buddy got to the end once and we are now waiting for both the ice region and fire region to get released, then we will add a bunch of mods and play it again. Probably with more friends we'll try to reel in.

Everything, although you do need to reset your bedspawn everytime you move the ship.
Its 10/10 having a mobile base, the onky thing I dont do on the ship is smelting/coalmaking. That's because if you leave the ship and return later, any loose item lying around on the floor will sink to the botom of the ocean while the ship's rendering in.

Recently started a mage-only run with some kinda gated progression and "unlocks" in order to catch up to my friends in level.
I was the mage of the group when I played with my friends and the fact that I only started being a mage and gaining any levels in it in the previous biome really showed when we were doing Ashlands. So I reset the character, set up a world with a treasure room full of mage gear that I'm only allowed to grab once I complete a challenge or kill a specific boss. Eikthyr as the first boss is the only one that I kill without magic, and he "unlocks" my first magic gear, Dundr (because the lightning deer obviously has to drop the lightning staff, the rest of the stuff also follows similar logic), feather cape and Eitr hood. Unlocks stop when you reach Mistlands because that's where you naturally unlock magic.
It's pretty fun so far.

Gizmo is a must for me. Lets you rotate building pieces however you want.
Be sure to grab the slope combat fix too so you can actually fight on slopes.
For some QoL you should get a mod that lets you pull items from containers near you when crafting.

Bronze gear is absolutely not worth upgrading, it's a waste of a material that is frankly a pain in the fucking ass to get a lot of. Troll set is plenty good for that part of the game, and if you know what you're doing you could honestly skip iron armor too and jump straight up to silver.
Only bronze gear people should bother with is the axe for chopping birch trees and an atgeir/buckler for parrying. Even the pick isn't worth the investment when an antler pick is enough to mine iron while also being repairable in the field with just a workbench.
It's the same thing with iron, it's needed for so much shit that spending it all on gear is a waste. A pick and one weapon/shield is all you need.
I highly recommend you turn the resource rate up to at least 2x when playing multiplayer so you don't completely drain your resources if one dude decides he wants a slightly nicer hat.

The game is a lot more fun when everyone just fucks around and do their own thing. My best experience with this game was exactly that, a large group of friends and I picked a general area to live in and then spread out to build our own houses. If something needed to be done then people would just do it without needing some king autist pestering them to do it.
Traveling between everyone is a pain in the ass? One of our guys grabbed a stonecutter and a cart full of stone and began making paths connecting everything.
Inconvenient river? Our bridge enthusiast got right on it and had fun spending an afternoon messing with different designs.
Greynig attacks getting too bothersome? The wall autist (me) started construction and found joy in making it practical by adding battlements and machicolations.
Tired of sailing around the whole island to get to a swamp for ore? One madlad dug out a long ass canal to make a shortcut for our longships.
Everyone just doing shit they wanted ultimately contributed to everyone's quality of life

The stamina system in the game is badly designed and wetness just being a flat regen debuff is retarded and sadly neither of these things will never get better because the dumbass playerbase cling onto the game being 'hardcore' and excuse any criticism of the game as a skill issue.
Whether you have 100 stamina or 1000 stamina, it literally doesn't matter once you run out because it regens at the same slow-ass rate and from the very beginning to the very end of the game you'll spend most of your time in fights slowly sidestrafing and walking backwards as to not get stuck with low stamina. Updates take too long. I spin up a fresh server every time a major update is released, and my friends and I play through it. Now I do double resources to reduce the grind since we've played through all the content up to Ashland so many times. It doesn't have anything that keeps me coming back once I've beat the final boss, so I don't play until an update releases.

We're starting to move over to Vintage Story, which provides a lot of similar gameplay with a richer crafting system and better exploration, but worse combat.

I had the exact same issue a couple months back.
I fixed it by going to the loginusers.vdf file and changing AllowAutoLogin from "1" to "0" with notepad.

You should be able to locate it by navigating to your Steam folder > Config > loginusers.vdf

You'll have to do this step every time you boot your PC *before* starting Steam, so I recommend turning off "boot on startup" in Steam if you have it on already. I also recommend creating a shortcut to the loginusers.vdf on your desktop since again, you have to do this every time you want to open Steam.

And i had to reload an old save to beat Fader, because i dont have the patience to grind for food for days. The battle is actually doable as a solo melee but the runbacks are horrible. And a ton of patience and resources are needed if you keep dying.

Same guy, just started having your issue. My previous fix I mentioned did work for me for a while, but seeing as I haven't rebooted my PC or steam in some time, it seems I was immune to whatever the cause of your problem was. Steam just crashed for me about an hour ago and I tried to boot it up again, and now I'm having your exact issue where I can reach and get past the login, but as soon as the main steam UI opens, it turns black and locks up my whole PC.

When a game is pve only, it requires regular updates, content development and expansions. Which is absolutely fine, but if you don't provide additions and new content you will absolutely see a loss in player interest after they clear content and finish the game..
PVP offers gameplay outside of the theme park and provides emergent gameplay never considered.
This is a difficult truth for many to accept as PvP can be an extremely tedious and annoying experience for many if its implemented poorly or unbalanced.
But it does absolutely provide a reason to continue playing beyond the initial content clearing.

Now if you want a pve survival game, you need regular content. Like mmorpgs. Its just a fact.

because Iron Gate has been dragging their feet for the last 3 years. Game came out in EA Feb 2021 and since then devs have done little progress, considering the amount of time and resources given to them. New biomes are undercooked and overtuned. And most of the issues and technical debt that there was in 2021 still exists today.
Players saw a rough diamond back in 2021 and eventually realized it'll never be more than that.

Not at all. If anything it's the easiest and most convenient. You can easily excavate the whole silver vein, pop it all at once, and stuff all the ore into a cart that you then just throw off a cliff in the general direction of your ship. One trip should get you enough silver to last the whole game too.
Black forest is by far the worst. Hitting the ore vein is like lighting a beacon that summons every fucking greynigger in existence to pester you every few seconds, and you're gonna be there a while before you finish mining the whole thing. On top of that you get fuckall ore relative to the massive size of the vein. And then you need to go mine tin too so you can turn it into bronze and actually get some use out of it.

I found encircling your copper pit with campfires using the stone you gather not only helps prevent spawns, but also deters regular greydwarves since the fire spooks them
you should also be trying to sleep through the night to avoid getting overwhelmed at night
gathering tin I don't mind desu since it's easily accessible, plentiful, and you essentially get 1 ore per swing of your pick with it

My base was a good distance from the black forest, and I got so fed up with having to deal with the greys on my way home at night that I just built a temporary base in the biome; lit the whole thing up with a campfire and a ludicrous amount of torches. Incredibly drawn out battle of attrition with a krom, arbalest and pockets full of mead and ooze bombs. I'd sometimes make my way to the top and jump off with the feather cape so that I could get a bit of time for healing and stamina regen.
I really disliked the boss, felt like the only time I ever had the chance to damage her properly was when my bonemass buff was active and I could just unga bunga with my sword without worrying about losing 80% of my health to a single attack. Too many seekers, not enough stamina. By the time the seekers are dead and you can 1v1 the boss, she just summons new ones.
Also I thought her lunge attack had a really fucky hitbox that was difficult to avoid.

I love the idea of the mistlands and it has some of the comfiest music in the game, but playing through it is miserable unless you have a group of fellow retards to travel with at all times.
Making the wisp dispell more mist and flattening the terrain a bit would do wonders for the biome. Also reduce the damage of seekers holy shit.
