Hiya /v/, this might be my most regarded idea yet, but hear me out.

Anyone ever researched buying the rights to a dead mmo or taking over the company behind it? It would take a shitload of work but once it would be running again it would be possibly be some nice passive income.

I have the skillset to technically revive something but have no idea on how to go about finding IP or games that would possibly be for sale.

No you don't
>>
At best you would make some old players return out of nostalgia while you lose money on maintenance and updates for a dead MMO.
>>

phone games already do this with old MMO IPs and people spend hundreds individually on them. what is playing mu online to try and get wings on PC going to do for someone when they can play it at work and get wings for $10?
>>

Fair enough. I doubt the maintenance would be that costly though, mostly depending on player base. Development on updates could possibly be a timesink. The ROI on returning players will probably shit in general yes.

I'd probably be better off forking on some private server build if available, although I struggle with the legal aspect.

It's crazy to me how complex an autismo spergs thought patterns can get and yet they are still capable of full retardation. actually seriously use your brain for two seconds in instead of letting it crank along unimpeded you stupid faggot: if the game made money, it probably wouldn't need reviving, would it?
>>
>>1454533
No one plays MMO's anymore. It's a dead unprofitable genre.
>>
There's a few MMOs that haven't had updates in several years and still have a live server so it has to profitable, to some degree.

>passive income
yeah probably more like a passive expenditure to be honest. And a huge fucking nightmare.
>>
>>1454533
There is no thought or promise here. Only consumers.
>>
>>1454533
if the mmo is dead most likely the company is defunct
>>
>>1454533
sounds like a bad idea similiar to what Embracer Group has been doing (hording dead IP's and then not having knowledge about continuity)
why not just make your own version of it you don't need to own shit to do that unless you literally want to copy everything from top to bottom

Diablo 1 = Christian
Titans Quest = Greek Diablo
Path of Exile = Roman Diablo
etc.

It's not that herculean of a task to run game servers for a game if you're given literally all of the source code. Depending how poorly its documented it might take you a couple weeks to understand the server infrastructure if you actually work at it. People have done much more with much less.
>>
>>1454688
You vastly overestimate how much it costs to run a server in current year. Pennies on the dollar.
The reason it seems expensive is because companies overspend to make way more server space than they'll ever need because they expect big numbers of players.

Op wants this to make money. That alone probably creates fees, legal issues and what not. The game won't be safe to use without constant updating. Pservers of old MMOs all require you to turn off your Anti-Virus for a reason. Most MMOs go offline once a day for maintenance. I'm talking out of my ass but it's probably more work than just creating the game server and letting it do its thing.
OP would also need to understand the code of the game he wants to buy.
>>
>>1454533
the problem is that half of the game is in the head(s) of the original developer(s). you will have a very very hard time adding features or even fixing bugs.
>>
Buy Sploder. I miss that website.

I always thought it would be really cool to set up a small company to run old MMORPGs if I had the money but I don't
>>

Honestly, old mmo i used to play used this guys strategy.

Nexus TK. Game was unique in that players were given the ability to run certain aspects of the game. they interacted with mods to create story events.

Old famous GM bought the game to 'save' it.
Threw it up on a new server.
Expanded the cash shop.
Did nothing else.
Players whine and complain begging for a content update, but the only thing that updates is the cosmetic shop lmao

at least OTK is a pretty good private server
>>
>>1480137

Yeah, I played there for a while. Got to Ee san, was capped out on content besides the ultra rare drops from raids and vortex.

Sam san requirements came out and I was going to have to spend like 100 hours farming vortex bosses, doing mini's, and mastering a craft and I tapped out. Been thinking of returning.

What game is that?

Servers for modern games with lots of interconnected systems are expensive and utilize modern hardware to its fullest. Modern hardware on a 20 year old game that maybe 10k people max will have accounts on is pathetically cheap.
>>
i think is a good idea

Could be fun.
If someone bought Wildstar, regardless of how buggy it'd be, then we'd have a fun place to hang out together.
>>
If even private server owners haven't done, it seem to be very infeasible

This is not even just licensing issue but the cost of it
