Sandbox/whatever you wanna call it newfag here, got swept up by watching some videos over the years about the genre + Elin releasing, but the genre is pretty interesting and I'm curious if there's any decent smaller scale/coop multiplayer games in the same genre? I know SS13 or whatever exists but it seems too large scale in multiplayer, and I'm just looking for something I can fuck around with a small handful of friends with, like 4 or 5ish. Do those types of games exist? Are there any other genres you anons may recommend as well? RTS seems fun with some small friends too and seems pretty similar to this genre as well. Is AoE2 a good starting point? I have very little knowledge on these genres as a whole.

>>1514615Not sure what you mean by the "Sandbox" genre. SS13 and Elin have very little in common, Im not sure what made you think that (one is social deduction and the other is a roguelike). If you're looking for games to fuck around with friends in then I'd look at Barotrama, Factorio and Garrys Mod. As for RTS games I personally recommend Zero-K. These were all me and friends favorites to play with each other, all very good games.
>>1515547Sorry, that's totally fair to say I've just heard "sandbox" be universally applied to those kinds of games and just assumed that's the easier distinction to make.I suppose to make it easier, I'm looking for games with the kind of freedom SS13 or Elin supply in terms of just having so many options to give to the player. Things are open-ended and nonlinear and progression could be essentially called completely random and the goal is to more or less survive for as long as possible. That's the kind of thing those games make me think of, yea SS13 has more of a focus on figuring out other players and etc, and Elin is about the pure randomization and dealing with the hand you're dealt, but I feel in both examples (at least from the little I've seen/experienced) they offer a mountain of options and no specific "script" to go off of. It's more focused than a game like Minecraft but not as "structured" as a game like Risk of Rain if that makes sense? If it makes it easier, games like Elin but multiplayer can be a much easier question to ask I guess.I'll still try out your recommendations anyway as a start, especially Zero-K. Appreciated anon!
>>1515585Yeah both SS13 and Elin have sandbox elements, but like Minecraft it isnt the core the game lol. I see what you mean now.I really never heard of a multiplayer roguelike. The closest thing would probably be MUDs or SS13, but neither of those things really are roguelikes. But that shouldnt stop you from looking, heres some websites that could help in your search.roguebasin.comgrapevine.hausgame-scry.online/browse/mud

>I'm curious if there's any decent smaller scale/coop multiplayer games in the same genreGod I wish. SS13 remains one of my most favorite games ever, but no game comes close to the massive span of what that game simulates along with its normal gameplay. I've seen games that go in depth with the atmospherics simulation, the chemical reactions, the social deduction, or the body mechanics. But I have never seen it all in one package AND in a multiplayer format besides from SS13. I've seen some roguelikes dip into it but no fun with friends : (
>>1514615This is a fun game but it isn't multiplayer it's more >>>/vrpg/ & >>>/v/
