Is build 42 living up to your expectations?

Also Happy Christmas, zombros!

Have they fully released it yet or is it still unstable? I'm just waiting for the stable build to start playing (will probably wait for modders to update their mods too).

Money and success is a litmus test for a game developer's character and ethics. If they keep improving their game after gaining both, they're a decent dev with good morals. But if they get lazy and start putting out half-assed updates, you should regret ever giving them your money.

If you can measure the time between builds on the geologic timescale you've got problems even if they were good devs.

Also what do we expect NPCs to do? Are they supposed to be like the player, trying to survive? Should they be moving around, fighting zombies and collecting supplies? Should they be holed up in prepper bunkers, presumably self sufficient, and interactable for trading (hopefully not in a gamebreaking way like picrel) or quests?

How many of them should there be? Would they be active when the player isn't in the area? What do people want out of NPCs?

It's honestly kinda crazy how badly they want you to base here. It's just TOO perfect: petrol pump, generator nearby, next to the river, has fence, the largest basement I've seen so far, and a large apartment on the second floor. Not to mention right next to the animals farms.

There's a lot to like about this update, but it needs work. Apart from bugs and jank (most of which will probably be fixed), the most glaring issues for me are how unaware and disconnected the devs are from the theme of their own game (90's gritty realism zombie horror) when they do things like update the moodles to shiny 2020 era style emotes, or decide to go through and arbitrarily change names of things to what would be politically correct in 2020. Luckily this can be rectified with mods more or less easily (moodles already are).
The other big thing for me is their crafting system is kinda cool and neat, but 95% of it is fluff. They strove so hard for some kind of pseudo-realism that they forgot there needs to be an actual gameplay benefit to grinding through multiple tech trees. Especially weaponmaking with blacksmithing needs to be way more enticing in the high end to make the work worth it. If you can't churn out katanas and mastercrafted longswords after maxing out those skills and jumping through all those hoops, what's the fucking point?
>>

That kind of PC is at least correct for the period. I'm talking about things like Agoraphobic being called "fear of outdoors" or Illiterate being "can't read", because I guess its "ableist" to assume that the player is even literate themselves. Or everything having to be a "-person" (maybe that's also bigoted actually, not respectful of people identifying as non-people).
Just noticed they patched some of those names though, maybe there's hope for these cunts yet.

B42 is kind of too broken to enjoy right now. So many things are just bizarrely broken or tuned wrong. It's going to be months before it's even in a stable state and they've hardly changed anything front-facing except the lighting/visibility, which to be fair is the one great part.
>>
Holy shit what the fuck did they do to the trait system? Now it's even more rigid and boring than before because you basically need to make a dysfunctional character to use any of the good traits.
>>
why would anyone ever take deaf or illiterate? Those traits seem so pointless in the grand scheme of things that you could just remove them and replace them with something less penalizing

>>
the reason the river is toxic is because its a alt universe where they imported millions of indians and they shat up the river upstream

its also why you got alot of brown zombies in kentucky
>>
>>1545562
>Bro just don't adapt to your environment in the fucking zombie apocalypse
I think doing the bare fucking minimum to prevent getting a disease in a survival situation is the sensible choice
>Okay and your excuse for rainwater being as toxic as bleach is?...
you need to consider several factors as to why is this the case
rain water in real life isn't considered potable either, you can still get dysentery from it albeit the chance is much much smaller than from a puddle or a pond for example, that's one thing
from the lore perspective, the airborne infection could make the rainwater in the clouds tainted somehow, dunno if it's possible in real life but this is a videogame so videogame logic applies
and from the gameplay perspective, I would guess the reason why you need to boil any water, whether from a river or rain, is because it forces you to expend your limited resources for making fire, since one of the aspects of the game is managing your supplies, having to boil water constantly can eventually force you to go and gather more materials for fire which

but the main problem is that there are no different levels for poisoning, you get the same effects from drinking tainted water as you would from drinking bleach or eating burnt food with weak stomach, if they ever introduce different disease like dysentery that would then force you to look for specific medications or natural remedies to cure it, it would not only make first aid somewhat matter but you it would also finally give you a reason to go explore specific locations like a hospital in order to survive

no that's not it, the aiming itself is completely fine but something is completely fucked with veteran, I just tried it again with a new character and the shooting works fine now so the update must have fixed it, too bad my old save with veteran literally cannot hit anything

>I'm guessing they fucked up his trait so he was somehow at max panic? That's what it feels like at least
That could be why a lot of people were complaining about the trait being absolute shit.
>>
>>1545600
the aim debuff from panic seems massive, start a game as a police officer and immediately you'll be hitting around 1 in 3 shots, but once you attract a big horde and your character goes in max panic, he can hit only around 1 in 10 shots so fighting a massive horde with guns becomes almost impossible without beta blockers
I don't actually mind the new shooting system, it feels pretty similar to AdvancedTrajectory, it just needs buffs at low aiming levels and to fix the constant gun jams

It's somewhat different from before
aiming at a zombie with the crosshair is essentially like the outline from before except you can actually pick what you want to shoot at, the more the circle closes in the more accurate your shot will be, I'm not sure if aiming the tiny dot in the middle at zombie heads does anything but I feel like you get more headshots if you aim precisely with it
at 0 aiming, it's base 50% chance that goes up by 4% every level, each level of aiming also seems to allow you to shoot from further away
panic has a much bigger effect on hit chance now, you might be fine shooting 3 or 4 zombies coming at you but when the shooting attracts a big horde and your character starts panicking, you won't hit shit
right now the biggest bugs are shotguns being unable to multihit and all guns jamming way too often no matter the condition

getting muscle strain after only 6 hits at 0 weapon skill definitely felt a bit too much
all it serves is to just slow down the early game
>>
>>1545706
Muscle strain should onset on the next day, they have an exhaustion system that they could have tuned up while swinging a weapon and have the muscle strain set up after the adrenaline falls off if they wanted to go for a realistic approach.
>>
Can I use mushrooms to heal my brain?
>>
>>1545716
Funny because the game already did something similar with exercising. You don't instantly feel the pain of doing it, it shows up hours later and the strength and duration depends on how much exercise you did (and how often you're doing it).
They could have just re-used that system.
>>
>>1545720
They should. It would make more sense.
>>
>>1545645
Yeah, I wouldn't know, I always play on sandbox settings with everything tweaked the way I like it. I think with Fast Learner and one pip (75%) in a skill its not bad, I only increase the base multipliers on Fitness, Strength and Electrical because those skills are just too retarded in the way you're supposed to grind for them.
>>
speaking of fitness and strength the devs should make it that you gain exp in them from combat since you apparently get more fucked up from it now than actual workout
>>
>>1545777
you get fitness and strength from fighting
>knife weapons 1 fit + 1 str per hit
>blade/axe weapons 1 fit + 2 str per hit
>blunt weapons 1 fit + 3 str per hit, pushing is considered blunt attack but deals zero damage, stomp acts like blunt weapon attack
>>
>>1545780

>>
>>1545784
lol, not happening, I was expecting whole remake of regularity/exercise system when they showed muscle strain in blogs but you see I expected too much apparently, they want you to grind all the time in this game now

what would be an acceptable rate of fitness and strength gains per day? I don't think the devs intend for players to max out their stats after working out every day for 2 months

According to zomboid devs it's impossible to be able to do all of the following as one person, put air in your tires, read a book, boil water without burning it, fire a gun and hit a target smaller than your mother, count to 5, get out of bed without tripping and breaking your leg, unplug your refrigerator, apply a bandaid without making the wound gangrenous, walk more than 5 feet without having a heart attack, hold a fishing rod the right way up, pick up trash off the ground, or stay up late without literally falling asleep standing up. Honestly? Not really. The big thing I was looking forwards to (crafting and the weapons update) isn't even IN this fucking unstable build. I'm also for some reason, one of the select few people who get worse frames than the previous update, going from ~60 to sub 30 when zoomed out. Even in zones without zombies.

Animal husbandry doesn't really interest me much, don't care much about the farming stuff. All that's there now is what's effectively a graphics update for the player facing side.

Muscle strain is, in my opinion, probably the worst mechanic added to the game by a longshot. It doesn't change the usual strat of kiting a big congaline of zombies and beating them to death. It just makes it take way longer for no reason. You need to take more breaks and you need to take them for much longer. It's fucking awful.

The half dozen extra skills also honestly isn't great. Just more grind for you to do to do basic shit like make a shiv.
>>
>>1546010
I have some hope that the reason for the skills being fucked up is that the crafting part of the update is still half baked.

Were aiming and long blade books in B41? As rare as books are now, these are really nice to find.
>>
>>1546066
It explicitly is. They said as much in the roadmap for the build 42 unstable, and if you try to craft some items that requires a sharp edge, you'll notice a ton of things you can't even make but literally have to in order to acquire it in game, like a purpose smithed spearhead or how you can "Assemble a mace" but can't actually craft the mace head. If you look back at April's Thursdoid ("D'ya like them GrappleZ") You can see a ton of obviously crafted weapons that you can't make right now.

>>1546072
Where they fully break down weapons into multiple parts, and you'll be able to whittle your own baseball bats and shit. It's half in the game with how hammers and axes have three separate durability bars for sharpness, head condition and handle condition.

Multihit is stupid. Buckshot doesn't spread enough for it to be practical, even at maximum useful range. And even if it did, the spread is vertical too, so more pellets would be hitting the ground and sailing over than actually hitting targets.

Shotguns are basically just better pistols that are harder to carry. They should be ridiculously common (and so should their ammo), manual ones should rarely malfunction, and each shot should hit like half a mag of 9mm.

So, I fucked around in debug after this post. All the player smithed weapons are in the game files and are totally useable if you spawn them in, and it seems if you debug in a crafting station like a forge, they have placeholder recipes for a lot of them too. You need stupidly high skill to smith the better options, but they're also extremely good. The player crafted swords are basically infinite katanas, since you can also smelt down random metal junk you find into useable iron
>>
>>1546202
No. I managed to reach 84kg fairly easily by just eating whatever food was available but now I'm losing weight even though I'm actively trying to gain it. Granted I'm fighting a lot more now but I'm also eating a ton of food.

>>
>>1546336
Holy fucking cope
Why did he fall off
>>
>>1546343
It is, I'm testing it right now as we speak.

Using a claw hammer, a character with 0 strength and zero skill suffers around 1.2 muscle strain per swing; you don't suffer negative effects until about 25 strain.

Bumping strength to 5 gives about .8 strain and at 10 you suffer about .4 while still at 0 skill.

However, where it gets interesting is 5 skill and 0 strength. You suffer about ~.75 strain instead of the .8 from strength and at 10 skill it's .3 instead of .4.

If we do 5 skill and 5 strength, you get .5 strain per swing. 10 skill, 5 strength is .2 and 10/10 is .1 strain per swing. So it seems there's some order of operations thing going on here; so weapon skill is less beneficial for people with average to high strength; but technically weapon skill gives more reduction to strain than strength does.

Most weapons aren't so heavy or unwieldy for that to be a realistic outcome unless you're hungry skeleton levels of atrophy. If you're firing some insanely large and impractical cartridge like .700 nitro express, pic rel, I still couldn't see an argument for muscle strain but like bruising your shoulder instead. I've fired hundreds of rounds of 5.56 when we had to get rid of ammo and the only thing that hurt was my hands from loading the magazines, not shooting it or holding the weapon.
>>
>>1546619
>Shouldnt holding out a gun cause more strain on your muscles than recoil? t. never fired a gun
Guns are, would you believe this, designed with ergonomics and usage in mind.
There's some really beefy heavy guns out there, but most are surprisingly light because you're expected to shoot them.
Something like a rifle chambered in 5.56, or any 9mm handgun can be used by girlymen with ease.
You might get a little bruised if you're using a lightweight shotgun and firing high powered slugs all day or something though.

Retenaru hasn't done a big stealth deep dive yet. From my personal experience with conspicuous, zombies are much slower to notice you in general; nevermind hiding behind a fence to become completely invisible.

>>1546619
Only if you're exceptionally weak and frail. The entire benefit of modern guns is that they can be used even by the frail and infirm. Only really holding up a handgun would cause significant strain over time; since that's ultimately a roughly 2lbs weight being held away from your body. But strength is absolutely a factor there. Recoil will never cause strain. Anybody who's actually shot a gun will have stories about spending a whole day at some range just firing off 500 USD worth of ammo non-stop.
>>
>>1546571
No, if anything I'd say this whole thing makes the stealth/combat balance worse. Since if you build big into stealth, then invariably get caught by one of the random super zombies; they'll bring all their buddies with you to investigate when they shamble over to investigate. This leaves you either:

A) Over extended and surrounded, and will probably be eaten
B) Forced to fight, and unless you also have high weapon skill and strength you'll generate significant strain and make a lot of noise to which other zombies will find you
C) Be forced to flee and potentially run into another group at worse, or have to abandon the loot altogether.

So, I'm doing a run as a burglar with inconspicuous right now, and this has been exactly my experience. I'm now realizing that the reason why the crafting in Zomboid is so terrible is because the devs have autistic obsessions and they want the player to do highly specific actions.
>>
>>1547063
I'm coping that's because they're not done with the crafting yet and they'll at least improve it a little bit in the future. Like the bone clubs, where you apparently need a recipe to wrap some leather around a bone.

Why can't you just make the quicklime cement like medieval people did?
Because it would ruin the very specific thing devs want you to do.
Devs want you to get a sack of sand, then forage clay, then mix the sand and clay;
This needs to specifically be done with a bucket of water, no, it can't be any other container and you can't use a hole in the ground to do that.
This doesn't make cement in real life btw, sand + clay = regular earth.
In real life just mixing quicklime with earth on the ground is enough to cement stone structures that lasted for over a century. But if you could do that you wouldn't go through the specific ritual of getting a bucket, a shovel, collecting the sand and foraging the clay, It's "too easy", lemmy probably thinks. People would be making bulks of cement by piling up limestone, just like in real life.

Just like the pickle jars, the vinegar needs to vanquish when you open them. Your character just drinks up all the vinegar so you can't continuously store stuff in vinegar, that would be too easy, like in real life. Zomboid is a simulation game, it's meant to be hard.

Echo Creek is too small of a town to want to permanently base in though. My favorite new base is definitely the community center in Brandenburg. Its too big for one person but it would be perfect if you play with friends on a server together. It even has an indoor pool that you can still fish in. Maintenance being used as a redundant crafting skill isn't a bug, removing plumbing to add the new water system, without adding the water system, also not a bug. Log walls recipe being rag only is not a bug.

Almost everything bad with the update was an intentional decision taken by game director and it's being put on beta with those because he deemed acceptable. He thinks it's okay to release the beta for the new version with ridiculously impractical recipes and broken systems that were previously working because "we'll figure that out later".

March 2024:
>Sadly not too much from the new crafting in motion this time. Please be assured, though, that there’s a lot of work going on there, but some aspects aren’t ready for show, and others are waiting for a core code update to hook things into and as such aren’t filmable.
May 2024:
>At this point the main element of the Build 42 update that’s been holding stuff back has been the substantial crafting overhaul that’s been underway.
October 2024:
>For the past half a year or so we have had six people working on our new vision for crafting. As regular readers will know, delays with it have been a primary reason that things have been held back. During B42 development we didn’t build in enough safeguards should key members of the team become unavailable due to illness

I think something went wrong with this. The engine update (basements, lighting and animation upgrades) was merged in January. The big thing left was crafting, and something went wrong, and they had to throw more people at it.

The new crafting mechanics feel like they belong to a different game.
They feel more "You wash ashore a deserted island, survive the zombies!" style game rather than one where you're in a 1993 American county.
Why the fuck would anybody be crafting wooden cudgels and stone spears when there's more than enough random shit laying around to make much more effective weapons with minimal skill?
They're zombies, not fucking vampires. Any pole-like object with a heavy thing on the end will smash heads from a safe distance.
For all their talk about realism the game sucks dick when it comes to common sense anti-zombie tactics.
>>
>>1547945
I like the new crafting system because I like to start in the middle of the woods with nothing and survive on foraging, fishing, trapping, farming etc. The problem is that the way they made it it requires you to have a shit ton of stuff you can only get in towns so it completely defeats the purpose of having the whole system in the first place.

>The new crafting mechanics feel like they belong to a different game.
I'm not sure if the current crafting in B42 is basically all placeholder and alpha stage, because they've said before that their vision for mid to endgame is basically to have the player reinvent and make post-apocalyptic medieval-ish type technology. That makes a certain kind of sense, but the problem with this is that the timescale for the vast majority of game sessions in PZ don't last beyond a month or a few months.
So essentially the whole crafting system as they envision it is intended for a miniscule subset of the player base to roleplay blacksmiths and farmers and make pottery on their year 7 servers. What they need to do is let go of the "muh realism" (not that many of their recipes or ideas are even realistic) autism and vastly simplify the earlier levels of a lot of these new and reworked skills. You need to be able to make simple tools and weapons and crafting benches out of practically anything. You can up the complexity for the later part of these skill/tech trees. And even then, it needs to be rewarding enough to make you want to grind these skills up no matter if its "realistic" or not. If I'm grinding up to 8+ welding/metalworking or whatever, I want to make cool looking sword type weapons that are functionally superior to machetes/katanas, because if they're not then I might as well just play the game killing zombies and find more machetes and katanas.
>>
>>1547985
>because they've said before that their vision for mid to endgame is basically to have the player reinvent and make post-apocalyptic medieval-ish type technology
That doesn't make any sense because their repeatedly stated intent is for the player to die in the first few weeks of the game.
I don't think anything new happens after about 50 days ingame, which causes katanas and shit to appear on zombies.
>>
>>1547893
Damn, that's the dream start.
>>
>>1547987
I remember reading one of their dev blogs about long term road maps and they did explicitly say that. Again, you're right though, the vast majority of runs will end in the first few weeks. Its a fun idea to have the option of playing Sims and having these ultra intricate crafting trees, but the question is how much dev time is it reasonable to spend on that vs if they had put all their focus into the map rework, adding z-axis, NPC's, maybe animals for hunting (that's pretty good addition even in the early-mid game). We'd probably already be playing B42 stable in MP and just waiting for the NPC's.
>>
It's so fucking weird to get a patch for a zombie stomping game which removes a lot of fun in regards to stomping zombies.
>>
Starting out feels pretty fucking RNG when you can be surrounded by more zombies than you can clear before your arms are hurty-wurty :(
Like obviously there's RNG involved for how well your start goes but it often just feels impossible because you CAN'T clear an area before coming up against more zombies than you're allowed to curbstomp, and there's no real way to be stealthy when they're absolutely everywhere.

The only way to get maintenance at a reasonable rate is to find something like glue or a whetstone and use that to repair the weapon in your hand. Even with a +125% starting multiplier for being a repairman or something you'll only get ~20 xp per action. You can get it by killing zombies with tools specifically, it seems. The various hammers and a tire iron are the ones I've found that work, I think the wrenches also work to level the skill. Leveling maintenance naturally is going to be miserable.
>>
>>1548028
>>Nigger just like...Don't interact with the zombies lmao
considering how annoying the made the combat, the best way to play the game now is to stealth crouch everywhere and lure large hordes away into forests
>>
>>1548037
Yeah because that's fun gameplay, fucking hobbling around like a goblin to lure zombies into the woods.
>>
>>1548024
The only reason why zombies are even remotely a threat is because they're just walking bags of HP, even if the game tracks where your character's hit actually lands to determine if the zombie's "armored" or not.
>>
>>1548039
The game feels like shit once you realize that regular hits are worthless and it's only crits that matter because they're nearly 1 hit KO's.
And crits 99% come from weapon type and skill, which makes a lot of stuff sort of shit.
It's why spears were OP as hell, they had a huge crit chance plus would 1 hit KO on crits.
>>
>>1548034
The whole new aiming system is retarded. The game applies a penalty to your accuracy and widens the cone if you aim at an interactable object. So if you take aim at a window, you lose some accuracy from the "Baseline" when not aiming, and zombies have a massive penalty; even if they're not moving at all.

No idea how anyone thought the whole system was a good idea when it's still coupled with muscle strain, in addition to all the usual problems with guns like the limited ammo and "Being loud" thing.
>>
>>1548042
At higher levels, regular hits do actually matter. Since you go from 30% of the weapon's actual damage to around 100% or more. The real dogshit thing is how only axe, long blade and long blunt weapons get an additional bit of bonus damage at levels 3 and 7, so they're closer to 200% damage by level 10.
>>
>>1548043
I'll gladly take the new aiming over the old highlight system that made every gun other than a shotgun feel like shit to use
>>
>>1548045
Axechads rejoice, the only weapon class that gets bonus stats from a profession-exclusive perk too.
>>
>>1548046
I do suppose they can fix this in the long run, unlike the old highlight system which will never feel good.
>>
>>1548047
It's been like that since the beginning, axes were definitely just the objective best weapon class overall. Long blades might overtake them in the long run thanks to being able to smith your own now.
>>
>>1548049
>>1548045
Sorry, need to correct myself. It's long blunt, spears and axes that get the bonuses, and you get an additional reduction in stamina usage at level 8+.
>>
>>1548054
Does anybody actually get to level 8 without exploits or just monotonous grinding?
I've cleared an entire city before and not reached that level.
>>
>>1548056
If you start with a level in a specific weapon skill, it's not too bad to reach level 8. Weapon skill EXP is tied directly to damage (sadly I don't know how much per point of damage) so as you level up you trend towards more XP over time, and smashing downed zombies with your weapon also nets you more XP.

>>
>>1548088
Same, although first aid is still irrelevant. Not even in MP with friends would it really be that impactful to have a dedicated medic.
If there were more medical actions, like in Rimworld, then there might be a point. It could be cool for some really long running game to have to consider being able to do surgeries, but its the same problem as with crafting rework, its useless and invisible to almost everyone playing the game.

>I saw no option for the lantern. I hold it in my off hand.
I don't really understand why they would add a craftable lantern and a flashlight if both work the same way, you'd think the lantern could at least be hung from a backpack or belt but provide less illumination in front of you but if that's not the case then I really don't know what is the purpose of them

Same reason why 7 days to die became shit. Devs have an extremely specific "Vision" for the game and try to force all the players to follow it to the detriment of the game's core systems. Honestly, I hate to say it but Cataclysm has it way better. Because you can use just about any old thing that would logically work; since that game just tags items with tool qualities. Why did they remove stone as a tool then?
3 years have gone by and the devs have trouble taking short steps forward.

I just tested and the Soda Pop hasn't been fixed.
You have an array of items in the game that completely eliminate hunger and the need to sleep for multiple days.
Water can't be boiled if you do not have a very specific water container.
So the game is 100% broken and they haven't fixed it in 2 hotfix updates. Lemmy said that he was disappointed by the reception meaning he actually thought people would be mindblown by a Zomboid patch that breaks water boiling among a dozen other things.
>>
>>1548469
what the fuck is that pc clipping?

Pots and buckets are the only containers that can boil water atm. But be warned that buckets take many in-game hours to purify.

It's the new and improved graphics of B42 which allows for sprites to be in front of you so you can finally sit in a couth that is facing north.
>>
>>1548379
Because there's not much else around Echo Creek. Besides, I guess you haven't seen the house north of town? 3 story rustic wood house with its own well right outside the door, chicken coops, fields, storage shed.
>>
>>1548425
28 days later style zombies are something else entirely. The same reason sprinters are something only hypermasochists with 3000 hours in PZ play with.
I think what people underestimate is the stress they'd put on their bodies by the type of repetitive actions you'd do to kill zombies. Hitting something relatively hard with a blunt object over and over is bound to result in tennis elbow or some shit before long, and then you'd have to resort to running away all the time, until your knees got fucked, and then it'd officially be over.
>>
>>1548453
That is actual chad tier game design logic though, simple yet allows for so much complexity, so I doubt we'll see it in PZ.
>>
>>1548478
The problem there is people make a living out of hitting thing much harder than people for hours on end every day. Just like people make a living out of running really fast for really long periods of time. I'm sure a lot of people would fuck themselves up, but nowhere near to extent you imagine. Of course, the problem of wear and tear also applies to zombies as well.

It doesn't make sense for it to take an hour to boil any sized pot of water though.

I tweak Fitness and Strength, thinking about tweaking Electrical too because the way you level it is just too annoying. There ought to be some VHS tapes for Electrical like there is for Mechanics, so you can at least boost it up 3 without having to spend ages dismantling every TV set and digital watch in existence.
>>
>>1548546
In B42, sometimes a pot doesn't boil no matter how long I leave it in the oven.
Also, the graphics for the range show a flame when you turn the oven on, but it doesn't look like placing something on top of the stove actually heats it.

screwdrivers and rocks are absolutely insane in this build
>>
>>1548546
This is precisely the kind of thing where you have to consider if its reasonable from a gameplay perspective rather than how realistic it is. You can have variable times depending on quantity, but it should generally be pretty fast regardless of quantity because otherwise its mostly just an annoyance.
Really the main problem with the "endgame" of this game is that striving for realism is the opposite of what motivates you to engage in that kind of gameplay. Why should I grind skills, build my base, come up with solutions for this or that survival need if I can't achieve something closer to automation? For instance it doesn't matter that its not realistic, but being able to purify rain water via plumbing a sink is a nice automation goal in your endgame base building. You invest into carpentry and other skills and scout a suitable location such that you now get to have a steady source of clean water. The game needs more things like this that you can strive for, that simplify your game, instead of coming up with more ways of assfucking you by having you sit around waiting for hours.
>>
>>1548555
Rocks are probably the best disposable short blunt weapon in the game right now. Since you can just find them fucking everywhere and they barely fatigue you, while still dealing decent damage.
>>
>>1548558
The biggest "realism" offenders with the new update aren't actually realistic at all. Some of these mechanics aren't bad ideas and could enhance immersion, but the way they're implemented is neither fun nor realistic.
>>
Speaking of maintenance. The edge sharpness of weapons and separate handle/head durability system is really highlighting how fucked this game's durability system is. When weapons become completely blunt after only a couple attacks, it really fucking sucks. Never mind dedicated impact tools like a hammer snapping after only a few swings, or the head becoming completely useless after bashing in a dozen zombie's heads in.
>>
>>1548566
That said I'm not sure if water boiling taking forever is even intentional, because sometimes it doesn't boil at all. It just seems to be broken.

This is why they were underwhelmed by the response. It was almost a non-event in the charts. They thought that holding back an update for 3 years would blow everybody's minds once they released it with no multiplayer and an intentionally broken plumbing system. They thought people would be going nuts over the privilege of spending hours collecting clay clumps to make 300 bricks and then traveling throughout the map in search of the specific concrete item in order to make a brick house.

People are already apologetic of all the shit in the update without the multiplayer.
>>
>>1548658
I don't care about multiplayer, but the reason I'm not playing is because crafting is fucked, and skills are useless, and loot doesn't make sense, and I'd rather experience B42 after they fix all that because right now it's a bummer.
>>
Really though, how did this take three years?
>>
>>1548670
It will take even longer because this is the unstable version
>>
>>1548670
By changing focus halfway through. Remember this was going to be just crafting and animals at first. Then they decided they wanted an engine overhaul to add basements, increase the height limit and improve optimization. Then they wanted redo the map to pretty things up, then they wanted to add new towns, then they wanted to add a bunch of junk items, rewrite the existing skill books to have titles now, change how aiming and shooting works...

The scope for the update began creeping more and more with each subsequent thursdoid to the point all the manpower put onto the update got super diluted.

You need a wide array of mods to make build 41 bearable.
Notice that some of the most popular build 41 mods were stolen by the devs and turned into build 42 features, like throwing corpses out of windows and collecting from texture tiles. So yes, the community is basically developing the game.

>attaching flashlight to toolbelt

Anon failed to mention the gas station/diner/car shop is right next to a river, so fishing and infinite water are taken care of
Not that fishing really matters given the amount of livestock for you to breed and butcher
Plus you have a shooting range to the west that's packed full with loot, a huge orphanage complex north of town and Brandenburg is not far away which also places you near a mini-mall and a military checkpoint that's also packed with loot
Echo Creek is probably the best vanilla spawn in the game right now

did you know you can make infinite ammonia with water + air?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_HoWz5Kxfk

This is what crafting recipes should have been in-game. Once you're an expert metalworker you can find a book or magazine that teaches you to make a Haber–Bosch pressure reactor so you can shit out infinite gunpowder and bullets.

Instead, in-game recipes are random simple items.
Putting stuff in a jar is a recipe you need to learn. Your character has to learn how open the jar and put the stuff inside. You play as someone that is literally at a Down's syndrome tier of intelligence.
The cook recipes aren't "Make Vinegar by the Barrels" which is actually relevant to survival, it's "make breaded onion rings".

They can't even make breaded onion rings recipe in Zomboid without it being convoluted and bloated.
You cannot make baking soda in game. Meaning all recipes that require it are limited per world generation. They don't think these things through, ever.

Nobody is going to be looting baking soda just to make 2 or so cooking recipes, the onion can be cooked as salad or stir-fry, this is so stupid.

Downed zombies are a nightmare to aim at and hit.
Shotguns require precise zombie positioning in order to multi-hit.
Pistols only work point-blank.
Don't bother with rifles until at least shooting 6.
Don't bother leveling the skill without the new skill books found in military places and gun stores.
After shooting 8 attachments become much more important than further levels in the skill.
Rifles are rarer but military stores often have cartons of ammo; one carton has a total of 12x50=600 rounds in them, more than enough to clear densely populated areas -if- you can level up shooting to 6.
Panic and pain make guns completely useless.
Reticle is misleading and so are the bullet traces.
Shotgun nerfs and the new aiming/reloading skill books make the veteran and police officer mandatory for any gun focused character.

tl;dr new aiming system needs a lot of work

You don't just need a magazine.
You need a shovel to collect sand and specifically a wheat sack, it can't be any other container other than a wheat sack. You also need to spawn in a location with sand because some large areas in the map have no sand. You'll also need a bucket. It can't be another container, it has to be a bucket.

Also advisable to grab a metal tong, a saw, nails, and different types of hammers.
>>
>>1549062
fucking why though
>>
>>1549160
The original was developed starting in 1999, meant to run on windows 98 and 2000, it's filled with impairing problems, movement and visual bugs that the playerbase just got used to it. It's hard to mod or alter since it was made in its own engine and on top of that you have to run it through an emulator.
>>
>>1549169
>that the playerbase just got used to it.
yeah I tried the private ro in the general just around the corner and can't play it
>>
A PSA for everyone, the can reinforced weapons are straight upgrades over the baseline weapons. They do a bit more damage and have noticeably more durability than their normal counterpart. They are a bit heavier, and nail weapons do more damage still, but nail weapons remove durability from the weapon, can weapons also give maintenance XP when attacking. Adding a circular saw to a weapon makes it use axe skill, so it can be a useful axe in a pinch.

I believe you can get both recipes from the brawler trait at character creation.

It'd make infinitely more sense for them to channel all the work put into these new crafts into more useful applications for Electrical and Metalworking (and we don't really need Welding to be separate from Metalworking no matter if its more "realistic" that way). Having generators be operable with 3 Electrical is a great change (and almost required given how rare the generator book has become), however there is literally nothing else useful to do with that skill (except hotwiring, which just needs 1 Electrical).
>>
Are zombies way the fuck tougher? I have very minor wounds on one of my arms yet stomping them in the head does more damage than a level 3 skill axe to the head.

Default setting zombies can be "tough" which gives them between 240-300+ish HP, compared to a normal zombie's HP range of 150-80ish. Most weapons will deal around 20-30 depending on skill level, and even stomp attacks can only deal up to the high 100 mark.
>>
>>1549435
Also, if the zombie has a leather jacket, that's functionally an impenetrable piece of armor. It'll absorb about 75% of your damage if your character hits a body part covered by the coat. On a standing zombie, hit location is entirely random.

Sharpness is locked to the condition of the blade itself. So you get completely fucked if the blade loses any condition, since it's a weapon feedback loop. AS lower sharpness means higher chance to lose durability (and more muscle strain)
>>
>>1549763
I don't get why there's no way to repair condition on a metal head. Even the most fucked up, bent out of shape axe head can still be molded back into shape with a hammer and then sharpened to give it most of it's edge back. I feel like it would be cooler that way too since you'd only need one of each tool, and you'd grow more attached to them the longer you had them and kept them maintained.
Idk why they're allergic to any sort of tool permanence in this game.

in b41 there is this mod called they know, set to bite only and take a serum if you get bit, if it's too easy then you can set the serum to only delay not cure but it's already pretty rare
>>
>>1550184
Oh right, forgot about respawn. Yeah turn that garbage off.

>>

Still can 1 hit KO, which is faggy and RNG.
Infection mortality 'never' can still kill you and weaken you. It just won't 1 hit KO you from max health.

Does the blood level on your weapon actually affect it? I'm not sure if I gain any benefit from autistically washing my knives.

I hope its just that, god it would be extremely annoying if I had to wash my weapons. Like, at least add a 'wash all weapons' option instead of letting you pick them out 1 by 1.

>Fear of blood
Absolute game-breaking trait, makes characters unable to kill any serious amount of zombies without freaking out and uses huge amounts of time and water to counter.
Way too many traits ingame are 'spend more time doing useless shit' to the detriment of balance and gameplay.
>>
>>1550229
I swear that wasn't an option the last time I tried!!!
It was implemented because I complained about it!
>>
>>1550262
Should have mentioned that's in B42.
>>
>>1550254
A lot of games with traits like this have that same problem, since they're so easy to code. I realized just how bad "Need more food and drink" traits are in games like these, since after a certain point food and water is trivial to come by.
>>
>>1550329
Zomboid is sort of retarded because it separates hunger from calories.
You can stuff yourself 24/7 with vegetables and waste away like an anorexic somehow, which makes no sense.
Which means the 'you get hungrier more often' trait is actually a BONUS because it allows you to survive off of lower calorie foods.
>>
>>1550330
It's also making losing weight really annoying. Especially since apparently beating zombies to death doesn't burn that many calories; despite gassing my character out instantly.
>>
Some many amazing rural mansions to set up camp in the new map. I definitely can't complain about the new areas added to the game. Muldraugh is so much better now too.
>>
>>1550061
You need to unequip it. Can't place it while it's in your hand.
>>
>>1549980
It's definitely got issues. I get bored of single player easy but multiplayer is some of the best fun. I was admin on like a top 10 server for ages but had to step away cause I was sinking too much time into the game. Even with alot of players being cry baby cunts, it was huge fun. Reinstalled to check out B42 but who knows how long til multiplayer is ready.

I used to be one of the people waiting for npcs like most people, but I'm pretty sure they'd break the game and be unbalanced as fuck.
>>

Don't know if this is a bug but the military store in Louisville had 34 (thirty-four) boxes of 5.56 ammo when I looted it. Military checkpoint on the way to LV had 2 m16 and 5 mags for me, plus a few boxes of ammo.

>>
>>1550532
yeah its pretty bad. I got around back and as I was taking out the zomboids near the entrance I got swarmed and thought my character was fucked, I managed to bandage all my wounds and heal up though. I did find an m16 and a few mags in a tent outside the spot though.
>>
>>1550540
You probably can't
But try either sawing the barrel or that one shotgun accessory to scatter shots that we used to ignore, since base shotgun used to hit 5 zombies normally.
Didn't test it yet, but it really looks like it won't hit more than 3 zombies.
Because Lemmy and his crew of retards hate anything closely related to anything fun in their game
>>
>>1550555
For some reason, I feel that the zombies can see you somehow even while you're outside. I've been quietly killing a trickle on the east entrance and using the building in front of the shooting range as cover. They still broke through the north and east entrances to flank me.
>>
>>1550556
The fucked part about their new aiming system is that it's not even realistic; because bullets will literally disappear after a certain number of tiles. So shotguns are only useable within like 7-8 tiles or something like that, and the shot disappears beyond that point. It's dumb as shit.
>>
>>1549768

This is why another one of my standard sandbox settings is to lower the population. I really don't understand how people play with default or higher pops. It makes no fucking sense (on top of being insanely dull to have to clear so much everywhere you go) to have that many zombies in an area, like not even peak tourist season would explain why there's so many goddamn zombies everywhere.
>>
>>1551016
This reminds me how even when they implement NPC's, its probably not going to be very good at all. The latest thing I read from them was that they were prioritizing making sandbox NPC's before doing the story NPC's, which I think is the worst thing they could do given the game in question and their track record.
Like look at something like Rimworld, designed from the ground up around NPC's and with a much more competent developer, and it still took many years and mods to make it feel immersive and alive. In PZ, outside of heavily scripted NPC's for a story segment, its going to be end up no better than the NPC mods that already exist. The expectation otherwise for an NPC in a world like PZ is so high, and there's absolutely no way these devs can implement that. If they by some miracle deliver B43 with NPC's by 2028, its going to take until 2030 at least for modders to fix it (by essentially creating a Rimworld tier game inside PZ).
>>
NPC's are going to get special bonuses to prevent them from dying in the first week. Expect them to resist the disease (even if you cannot despite being immune lmao), and expect them to have bullshit aiming/damage stats.

Which honestly is fair enough except less than 1% of the player base is into that kind of thing.
>>
>>1551059
No, they said repeatedly the intention was to make it so a player could spawn in a forest and survive there.
Except knapping rocks requires a magazine only found in houses.
>>
>>1551025
its okay bro they said they were working on NPCS the entire time and they were basically complete they just have to put the systems together :)
oh wait they HAVE to make animal NPCs first, oh wait they HAVE to release the NPCS in 3 stages, oh wait they HAVE to add glassblowing and 3d doors first, oh wait they HAVE to overhaul crafting first, oh wait they HAVE to add moss growing first, oh wait they HAVE to spend 4 years overhauling the engine again for attics
>>

>>
>>1551033
>>1551025

>>

>14 ingame days then dying.
People die after only two weeks? I guess you do tend to get complacent around that time, and default settings means you die instantly from more or less any injury you take from a zombie.

I think heavily scripted NPC's would add some life to it. It doesn't have to be many either, and most encounters/stories involving them should end with them dead or fucking off (which fits the theme of the game anyway).
On the other hand persistent friendly NPC's that you could have in your base and that could go about their days Rimworld style is just too ambitious a task for these devs.

Not him but I'd have been happy if it'd simply been implemented in a basic, open ended way that mods could fix, since that's about all the hope I have left for this game, I'm unhappy because the retard implemented everything in the dumbest fucking ways possible.
>>
>>1551377
It's because, according to them, it took them three years to give us a half baked version of their final vision; but it requires you to dig through a crafting menu for every basic feature (like bulk washing bandages) and everything needs hyper specific tools to craft basic things. And if you don't have the recipe, you either need to grind a skill to level 3, 5 or god forbid 10 to learn the recipe or pray for a super rare crafting book to be able to craft something.

Half the features that were supposed to be in build 42 aren't even implemented. Farming simply does not function, the new stealth system does not function, crafting isn't in yet, multiplayer is disabled. The only thing they managed to add is the engine overhaul (which destroyed my game's performance), basements and changing the map.

>>
>>1551465
I believe stealth technically "works", its just shit on default settings. There will always be some zombies with better perception, so unless you're stacking all the odds together and going full stealth build and looting at night or during bad weather, its just going to be wasted points compared to herding most of the zombies where you want to loot away a block, coming back, fighting what's left, and then looting.
