If you're not familiar, he created UO Odyssey which turned UO into an old school single player oriented crpg with a ton of new content based on the older Ultima games. I've been running the /vm/ server for that for over a year now. Recently I've been getting back into EQ and saw he also did some work on this game, so I decided to throw up a server incorporating his stuff on my mostly unused VPS. Now I'm tweaking the mob difficulty (using the later introduced scaling methods toward the end of that thread) and leveling rate then working on zone stuff like old bazaar. Right now the low levels (10ish) feel good difficulty wise. Blues are easy, whites put up a fight but you aren't on the edge of your seat, yellows it starts to get difficult.

There was a really popular server that launched a classic with 2 box called EQ Reborn, unfortunately it died because the dev couldn't launch anything passed classic but even then the server had enough popularity for volunteers to takeover the server and launch Kunark then velious but by then had lost too much of its playerbase. Raiding really only became a necessity with PoP, i'd argue that making raiding overly accessible negates more content than it gives until then.

EQ really needs a server that emphasizes on the brutality of the game but not the grind. Getting to level 15 or so should be easily done in a 10 hour session. Monsters should be hard, and fights should require a group to recover and the XP should be good. I'm so sick of the mindless low level mob grinding but it's the only efficient way to go about it. I miss the times of hard fights and socializing during recoveries, now if you're typing you aren't mindlessly killing low tier mobs fast enough

SoloQuest update:Just finished the very tedious task of re-doing all of the starting zone tasks. I normalized the amount for each race (18 up to level 16) and changed the rewards to only crafted items instead of random drops/quest rewards from elsewhere in the world. I'd rather people actually do the original quests/camp the mobs for those items. Continuing with my bot neutering: Enchanter bots can't cast illusions, Rogue bots can't pick locks/disarm traps, Necro bots can't summon corpses. Basically any signature class utility outside of combat will not apply to bots EXCEPT bind and rezz. This is to make the player's class choice more impactful. Now I'm setting up the account progression system and then we should be good to go.

SoloQuest update:I've got alternate progression paths done up to Luclin. >Classic to Kunark Kill Nagafen OR Vox OR PhinigelORKill 12 iconic dungeon mobs >Kunark to VeliousKill Trakanon OR Venril SathirORComplete the Seb and Charasis key quests as well as all 3 medallion quests for the VP key.>Velious to LuclinKill Dain OR King Tormax OR YelinakORGet all 7 pieces of your class' Kael or Skyshrine armor by completing the quests.Loot drop rates were conservatively increased across the board (there's room to bump them up more). Any mobs with a respawn time over an hour had it cut to 1/7th of the time with a floor of an hour. So raid mobs with 7 days respawn are now 24 hours (+/- the scaled variance) and 3.5 days are 12 hours etc

PoP was the dark times of EQ, not so much nowadays where everyone partakes in the raids but on live it hyperinflated raid gear and overtuned its group content to match that, add to that the knee jerk bottleneck fix of level requirements on gear and SOE split the population in two of the haves and have nots, where raiders were being handed 1.0+ ratio weapons and high hp gear through an optimized tier progression that destroyed any sense of exploration or wonder and casuals were still stuck in the kunark and velious tradeable items. A group of casuals progressed at an astronomically slower rate than those that raided in all metrics of the game at this point.It wasn't until OoW that the casuals were finally given a bone with the various decently rewarded group/small raid content but they made the mistake with their raid gear scaling and those who raided were turned into gods in the non-raid content, I remember joining various groups doing DoN missions with raid geared players who basically just had me join only so that they could meet the party size requirements.

I thought the evolving items were a really cool idea before that it was never heard of for a casual to hold a 'raid quality' weapon but with some (alot) of work you could hold yourself a weapon of the gods, I quit shortly after this expansion and to this point the raid gear never stopped scaling so the new 'group' content was still easily solo'd by raiders who still progressed at an astronomically more expedited pace.
