>start a new default world>instantly get bored because it's the same flat plains and generic generations >try again and mess with the world gen settings>the world is suddenly way more interesting. I love exploring in games and Vintage story has always been a bit dull on that regard but tweaking the world gen has completely changed that. I've found so many cool looking places that it's quite fun just running around. The mountains are bigger, there are more lakes, more complex valleys and canyons. >>2197705I've had plenty of areas that look like this on my vanilla ass game. Maybe they tweaked it for the rutracker edition?
>>2197705Rone said he doesn't like realistic terrain, so never. I think that's stupid since this is the one game you'd expect to find it in, but I'd hope we'd at least have the option.I think minecraft changing it's worldgen back in the day with the adventure update traumatized rone hard enough to make him associate realistic terrain gen with "boring", but playing VS I'm always pissed at how even with larger landforms scaling you still can't reliably get endless forests, deserts, plains, or mountain ranges. I'd love for a future map on OG to look like an actual world instead of a endless repeating landscape of shattered noise separated by "ocean".

I can't decide if I should make a temporary base as soon as I find clay.I'm wondering if the earlier you make storage vessels, the better it is for early food management. Maybe start to explore further once I have at least a bowl and a portable cooking pot in my inventory, with maybe one storage vessel ready if you plan to make a gathering outpost that is 2-3 days of walking away.

>>2198234>>2198288Hide is a reasonable short term alternative as well until leather is ready.
>>2198234Late game flax farms make twine very abundant. I always opt for the inventory space in the early game. You don't really need a lot for a windmill until you reach late game tism' milling in a server with xskills or some shit. Before that, a small pounder and quern mill to get into the steel age is enough.

God, I fucking hate Expanded Foods so much.My hearty red meat stew, all sealed in a crock are apparently aging. And because the devs for that mod are fucking retarded they didn't make it so their foods last long inside a crock. This shit lost 75% of it's lifespan before rotting.
>>2198290Yeah, but I mean normally you're saving animal hides for leather and armor. Most people rush copper so they can get a saw since it's so important and aren't invested in doing much else. By the time you have a flax farm, you probably are already more than capable of leather production. I've personally only every skipped straight from baskets to backpacks, with the odd hunters backpack here and there.
>>2198374Me with cured alcohol that becomes useless before it even appreciates to a fine vintage

>>2198234I never ever waste twine on bags because if I can make twine, I can make leather, and leather has almost no uses other than making backpacks.
>>2198374That's not a mod issue, that's a vanilla game issue, has been for the past 5 major versions. I bet that cassava still rots within cooked meals, and aging is just a subset of that.

Do berry bushes grow better on more fertile soil?
Now that I'm more used to fight the wildlife and wolves by just throwing spears at them, I can see why you all said food wasn't an issue in the game. The combo of cooking and making a cellar really is a game changer.I guess farming for grains due to their extremely long preservation is probably the next move to prepare for winter later.
>>2198992>The fertility of the soil they are placed on has no impact on the bush's ability to grow and produce berries>>2198993Now you must choose my son, flaxen sloppa or a grain of honor?

>>2199220And to add to what was said above, mostly expectations. People and even the guide hints that you should get out of stone age because there's not "much you can do", but after looking around you can actually build a whole base while staying there.>have materials for an advanced house, packed dirt, leveled up packed dirt, wood, cobblestones, stairs, slabs...>you can make quite a lot of stuff with just dry grass and sticks>you can fight off anything with just spears>clay and farming can last you for a long while
>>2199257Except it's almost more work to stay in the stone age given that resource gathering with copper tools is just so much faster, and the barrier of entry isn't even that high. Once you have a pick you can just go murder a few marked copper nodes and suddenly you have an anvil.
>>2199379>Once you have a pickDon't know, never had any luck finding any in 3 different worlds. I saw maybe 4~5 bits once and that's it.

Would disabling copper and tin surface spawns be effective at prolonging the unga bunga stage, or would panning be still too good? It's only 40 nugs, and panning can get you that in like an hour of panning or less. You might have to mod panning gains to be less to prevent speedrunning. The stone age is honestly the funnest part of the game, and the fact that you *can* do animal husbandry (or should be able to; nigga just chisel out a dugout log for a feeding trough and make a bucket out of fired clay) and especially tree husbandry and extensive farming, it should naturally come before steel. It just doesn't make sense that goats, milk, and fucking apples are the end game and steel is effectively the easy part since you don't have to wait.

What does it mean when your prospecting pick keeps telling you huge deposit detected of the thing you want in every direction + misc low detections of things you dont care about, and you find the low detection while still not coming across the massive detection? I guess I keep poking into different, but close, veins of the thing while barely missing them?
>>2200306Well it's not exactly hard. It only find veins so many blocks to any direction. Dig one direction pick range and take a new reading, if it's worse go back and take another way.
What's the lingering time limit for a closed room? For example I seal my cellar with a hay block, when I destroy it how many times do I have to close it before the cellar isn't recognized anymore?
>>2200065If I mod it anyway, I'd add a "primitive plank" recipe which lets you carve shitty planks out of wood, inefficiently, using something like a knife + hammering tool (rocks will do). Like the Card Survival method of making planks. It's criminal that you can't make dugouts or other lumber craft in a "survival" game. You don't need a fucking saw to make a primitive vessel for holding water.>>2200220Nooooooo actually realistic animals would be too compromising! >>2200349give it a hunger reduction
>>2200349yeah +10% armor durability is completely useless, it'd still be useless even if it were +1000%, and tailor's only practical role in the game is making tailored gambytailor should get a twine efficiency bonus like from that one clothing mod. another stolen idea, but using 6 fibers + spindle to make 2 twine instead of 4 for 1 twine is pretty big.

>>2200118>>2200131>you have to do this every time you boot them up again afaikyou can setup a shortcut to do it for you.the trick is to set it to launch command line (cmd /c start "parent folder for your target" /affinity <cores> <pathway>)for example i have this as my steam shortcut,>cmd /c start "Steam" /affinity FE "D:\Steam\steam.exe"this doesnt launch steam directly, but it launches steam through command line and then sets it to use every core except the first. this in turn is also applied to all the games launched through steam.for steam in particular i need "Steam" in quotations and im not sure why. removing it just breaks the command.for defining core usage, a hex value is used. each character is for a group of four cores>hex is a 16 number scale, so 0123456789ABCDEF>core 1 in the group = +1, core 2 = +2, core 3 = +4, core 4 = +8cores 1,2, and 4 in a group would be B for example. no cores in a group is 0.the first cores are at the end of the value, not the start.so 000F would be for a 16 core CPU, and it would only use the first four cores (0-3). while 8000 would use only the very last core (15)
>>2200413forgot to remove the "not sure why", part cause i figured that out.anyways there's more, suppose you also want to use --datapath (like me because the last thing i need is more crap on my C drive)the best way i've got is to make your affinity shortcut target a .bat with your --datapath shortcut pasted in there but this wont close command lineif you want that just add exit to the end and start "" to the front, this'll make command line close as soon as it pops up.all together it'll be something like>shortcut>cmd /c start "parent folder for .bat" /affinity <cores> "pathway to .bat">batch file>start "" "pathway to executable" --datapath="pathway to data folder" exit

I hear this game either "takes too long" to do anything or "everything falls apart" and requires constant maintenance. To what degree is this true? Honestly, with how central the immersive survival aspects are and how much focus there is on food preservation and cultivation, it's strange that the actual hunger and health systems are so basic. It's a simple "it's a bar that goes down and if it's 0 you take damage". There are no stages of hunger/satiety. No weight gain or loss nor even any bonus to food types. No injury mechanics, just a basic healthbar,

>>2201281True. VS' is all over the place with its design choices. I kinda want to see a game that one ups VS in terms of giga autism. Like literally everything tries to be as realistic as possible, while still being a silly survival crafting voxel game.
>>2201281They could likely come up with something in the span of an update but the pace of updates are generally slow and focus is kaleidoscopic. Not Zomboid slow or Minecraft kaleidoscopic, but still.Same deal with rivers, enemy spawn logic, and... honestly, world generation at large.
>>2201605Cataclysm Dark Days Ahead is probably my favorite survival game. It has more depth than VS but it's not a voxel game.CDDA and VS are two of my favorite survival games so far. Nothing else really comes close.
>>2201631Long ago I loved CDDA, then everything changed when the realism troons attacked only Kevin the master of autism could stop them but when CDDA needed him the most he had a meltdown. Ever since that day they removed more and more features and have splintered the community so now all the features I love are split between branches.

>>2201540>>2201591It's Reze, but it's a redraw from someone based on that one manga/movie scene.
>>2201790>>2201792I think it's alright at the niche it's going for and has a lot of potential, but right now it's empty. I'm interested in the whole worldgen update they're working on and, if their momentum of updates actually foster a self-sustaining community, I might try to learn modding with that game. I'm at that stage of coding experience where I generally get syntax, language features, and a few data structures and algorithms in a vacuum but get stuck when asked to do a project. I initially tried with VS but I failed hard.
Vintage Story needs more horror
Frankly I think the game should've went more naturalist/mythological with it's enemies. The "horrors" are boring literally no one cares for them. They should've done stuff like giant lions and dinosaursThe most "iconic" enemy in the game is still just bears. Eldritch shit is just not that interesting when you do actually have to look and interact with it

Is the optimal fireclay meta to craft it? Or is it better to prospect for coal and look for it that way? I think I'm gonna need a shitload of it because fireclay roofing matches claystone cobble and that's after factoring in the bloomery generation.

Do you guys prefer to build big bases that has all your stuff in it or do you guys like to make small houses and buildings with whatever you need?Like, do you make a separate building for smithing and another building for cooking and another for leather making, etc? How do you guys mine cobblestone?Just pick an area and decimate it and make the area ugly as fuck?orGo deep underground and mine there so at least the big ugly hole is covered?I like building with shale but it's a top forming rock layer so it's hard finding a decent spot to mine it without making it look ugly. But if I dig a big deeper and mine underground for it then stuff spawns inside unless I spam light sources. I have the same problem when mining granite. I like building with it but since it's deep underground I have to spam light sources everywhere so nothing spawns near me.

>>2206054Experiencing the winter once is fine, at least if you have things to do like chiseling or building. I always either move south or just start the game in a warm climate. The default winter is way too boring and long for me. The default start is somewhere around 47 latitude, i prefer something around 30. You can check your latitude with the command /wgen pos latitudeIf you kept the default setting of 100k blocks pole to equator distance you have a decent journey ahead of you. >>2207502Go around them. You have a pickaxe, dig a hole from a safe area to the tin.
>>2207502Just run in and make a cuck box to mine in safety, or tunnel in from behind it somewhere
>>2207502ignore the cuck options.on the roof of that cave is locust spawners, focus on destroying those. locusts drop nothing so there's no real reason to keep spawners around
>>2207511This is the answer I was looking for, thank youIs there perhaps a way to stop the drifters from spawning in as well? they're pretty annoying
>>2207515Your only option is light.
>>2207515If you can't even fight the locuts you aren't going to last long enough to break the spawners.
>>2207515in short, no. its not like minecraft where you can place torches as as a bread crumb trail and spawn protector>oil lamps and candles have been nerfed into oblivion and im pretty sure they dont even protect their own block anymore>standalone torches protect a little bit of space around them, but they burn out after two in game days>torch holders are rare enough to not be an option (and you want the few you find next to firepits and pit kilns)>lanterns protect a good area but each one costs two ingots, so spamming them in caves is a bad idea unless you have a mountain of copper and beeswax (bee farming on its own is ridiculously expensive. if you get into that use https://mods.vintagestory.at/fromgoldencombs)use https://mods.vintagestory.at/show/mod/32420 to get a good feel of what protects what
>>2207535enemies don't spawn on chiseled blocks from what i was told.
>>2207538chiseled blocks are expensive in their own way. if you do that for every single ground block in a cave and around your base you're going to run ram usage up.
>>2207541>m-muh ramGood thing I have a dedicated machine to host my VS server. I gave it 32GB of RAM and it still barely uses half. And that's on a world that's at least 4+ years now. If I ever need more then I can always just add more. My server has 512GB of RAM, I'm good on that front.
>>2207546good for you mr. inheritance
>>2207360sneezer BTFO! chuds lost
>>2207546now you know, are you going to spam click the blocks instead of the classic grass firestarter tech
>>2207538Enemies will spawn in thin air if there are no available spawn positions, you used to be able to prevent spawns by putting down rocks on the floor but that made ron the big mad that people were cheesing his hecking loreslop
The key point is, if your idea is to basically fight the eldritch horrors every-time you want to mine you are playing the game wrong. Yes you can try to act like you're a chad but this is just an extremely inefficient way to tackle things in a game purely design around high-risk shit-rewards. You want to save time and take the easy way out whenever possible.
>>2197026>>2197030>>2197034I don't know who this is, but I'm gonna hug her
>>2207594It's reasonable to fight once he's got bronze+ but at copper and with nothing but shit armor he'll get torn to shreds in short order.
>>2207502Locusts and their spawners are soooo poorly designed. Literally like angsty 12 year kaizo mario level maker tier game design. You can kill 80 of them in a 30 seconds and they will just keep spawning. Once you find out they are poorly designed and just want to leave? You walk on a rusty nail and die.
How do I make the game stop hitching when I put a tool into the crafting gridHardmode: without turning off all mods

>>2207726cuteid rather just turn that shit off until theres a mod that makes a temporally unstable land stable. im not getting cucked from making a base with a nice view because it makes me crazy
d'ya guys like my kilns :}
>>2207715I usually have one going the entire time to no effect.

>>2207726>>2207727Salty's audiovisual design is impressive for many things, like temporal storms. That mod he created for them is so good you almost think it's a well-thought-out mechanic.
>>2207737>this is a part of temporal symphony nowoh so thats why bellhead shivers became a miniboss.
>>2207745Whilst I can understand why, I'm glad you can turn that off.

Random blocks in my charcoal pit keep getting deleted, but I still end up with most of the batch. What a dogshit mechanic. I'm just gonna mine for coal and never fuck with it again. Who the fuck even enjoys that OSRS tier grind to set it up anyway?>inb4 is your pit completely sealed Yes, obviously.
>>2207795thats...how making charcoal always is. you don't always get the exact number of firewood when you got the charcoal.
>>2207715>>2207725What in the actual fuck
>find surface gold and silver>don't feel much>find surface chalk>feel like the richest man in the worldI wonder what was tyron thinking when he decided to gate the entire leather industry behind such a deceptively rare rock. It unlocks so much good stuff that makes the rest of the game that much more pleasant
>>2207811why do you need chalk for leather?
>>2207813To make limewaterI'm aware there are alternatives but it feels pretty sweet to find one of the main sources of lime just like that
>>2207826I find that borax is just as abundant, to be honest with you, family.
How many mods is too many?

I'm kinda tempted to install the firearms mod
>>2207919I caved in and installed it. I still haven't gotten around to making a gun yet. It's actually pretty expensive making one. Right now I'm still using a crossbow.
>>2207922There's crossbows?
>>2207927https://mods.vintagestory.at/crossbows
>>2207922>>2207919It's expensive but the dopamine hit from instantly deleting bearniggers in one shot with a musket is unparalleled in this game, crossbows are a decent mid-game stop gap that pretty much completely replace standard bows.
are there any mods to make the light from stained glass be colored?
>>2207938>crossbows are a decent mid-game stop gap that pretty much completely replace standard bows. Are they really? iirc, historically, crossbows were made so an average peasant could perform the role of an archer without the same training, but even with a crossbow they could not outperform skilled bowmenI remember reading this in a history textbook many years ago so I could be completely mistaken, by the way
>>2207949Crossbows are more steady than the bow. If you are extremely accurate with a bow then it will outperform the crossbow. Usually people don't bother learning how to aim with the bow so they move to the crossbow. Slower fire rate than a bow, but 99% of the time you're hunting things that runs away from you anyways so the reload doesn't matter.
Translocators seem really pointless, especially considering how expensive they are. Here I was thinking you needed to activate one to advance the plot or whatever.
>>2207965Get the mod that makes you make one yourself. Add it to a high mountain where temperature reaches -40C and you'll have the perfect cellar.
>>2207949>Are they really? In games yes, they lack the fire rate but have insanely higher single shot damage often times negating the need for a follow up shot unless fighting like tier 3+ enemies, and even then using an iron crossbow with iron bolts will put them very low. A standard bow will reign supreme for crowd control, but for single target the crossbow is better. If we're talking IRL then you're mostly right.
>>2208046>gamesShould just be "game" since I'm only talking about vintage story.
So other than crocking meals, what other ways are there to preserve food? There's a lot of mods in the server I play at so I don't know all the ways to keep food longer.I've just been smoking meat then curing them in salt. For vegetables I've been picking them. For berries I usually juice them then let them dehydrate, the juice I turn into aqua vitae. Eggs and clams/mussles are the ones I usually crock since they don't dry age, apparently if your hefty red meat stew dry ages in a crock it loses ALL satiety.I don't really know how to keep animal skins longer. I need all the salt for curing my meats and I don't have enough lime/borax to process them all. Should I just let them rot? I do need a lot of rot to make compost. How about pies? Bread? Or do you only make those when you want to eat them?
>>2208136>I've just been smoking meat then curing them in salt. For vegetables I've been picking themThat and crocks are the only way of saving food longer than a couple in game months
>>2208136>There's a lot of mods in the server I play atFood Shelves adds glacier ice powered refrigeratorshaven't tried it but Medieval Expansion has cellar ice
>>2208167There's a mod that makes glacier ice rarer so the fridge is cool to use, but the ice is hard to come by. It's also a non-renewable resource.
>>2206921I might have to do chiseling anyway but here's the overall floorplan. The basalt sand is just for a makeshift dot grid.I'm gonna make a square shape instead of the normal rectangle shape with the large pillars inside the main building being the divider. with the pseudo-nave in the middle aisle between the large columns inside, with the other two entrances on the other sides. I'll have the arcades on the left and right.Let me know what you guys think so far if you want me to add anything or if I missed anything here.
>>2208136>crocking mealsThis HAS to be the most useless mechanic in the game, no? Do you really carry some clunky as shit around that can only suck up one meal from a cooking pot at a time? Why? I can just pull a meal straight from my cooking put and put it into my cellar and it will last plenty long enough.
>>2208175???you can put 4 servings in a crock
I cant even really understand what the shitters are asking about anymore
Anypony ever go wood elf mode?
>>2208169true but it's default settings are very generous unless you guys changed it, iirc 8 whole blocks of ice would keep your shit cool for over a montha trip to the north every two or so years sounds fun desu, I should install it for my current playthrough.
>>2207938I wish brutalstory was alive and you could instagib bearniggers with cannons
>watch VS tutorial video>greeted with a sexy tranny voice>have to wankWhy does this keep happening? I'm just trying to learn about the game...
>>2208205ok xeth
>>2208169>water freezes in winter>allow the player to head to a lake or pond and carve out lake ice with a chisel>let you build an icehouse structure to store said ice to use throughout the yearWe've been doing this shit for thousands of years. The ancient Persians even had Yakchals which could make ice as well as store it, in the fucking desert.
I have the most rizzless, unfuckable based in existence - it's two stories with four 7 x 7 rooms made of claystone cobble walls and oak plank flooring. Also there is a basement cave that contains a bunch of holes for clay molding, a charcoal pit, and a cellar. Also half of the building itself is magically floating above water.
>>2207811if the server has a lot of mods you probably have expanded cooking and a cullinary artilleryso...vanilla:>a cellar is obviously a must, with a properly made one your precious foods will never spoil at a rate faster than x0.25, this makes most food items last at least ~3 in game months>clay vessels have an additional bonus for veggies and grains>burning things makes them last longer at the cost of some sat>berries, juicing & drying is pretty much the best way to preserve them.>pies only last a month in a cellar outside of winter, but this improves the lifespan of berries and meat by a lot.>grain lasts the longest in flour form (twice as long as unprocessed grain) you can then turn it into bread or pie whenever you wish.>tree fruits last last a good while, and are the only way to get fruit sat outside of berries>cheese is great for long lasting dairy.>honey lasts forever and the wax can seal crocks. but is annoying to farm in vanilla with constant skep crafting. use from golden combs if your server has it.>as long as its not winter mushrooms and berries wont go bad if left unharvested. crops as well but they have varyingEF/ACA:>bottles are your best friend, when corked they make liquids last for a very long time>alcohols age instead of rotting, effectively eternal if properly preserved.>berries can now be candied, this makes them last for over a year.>fruit bread, lets you shove fruit into bread, another option for berry preservation thats longer than pie.other mods:>food shelves adds the ice fridge, but unless the server has a way to collect lake you'll need to >>2208193>medieval overhaul adds cellar ice, but it needs ice as well. and a lot more iirc>both of these stack with each other and regular cellar bonuses. so for maximum preservation you'll want to them all.

>>2204870truly, i closed the server today because nobody else has played for a week and i didnt really like the spawn anyways, it was a peninsula with other landmasses more than a few minutes away.honestly i think i'll ignore oceans and join nOG but i wanna take a few day break first.what does nOG have anyways? and are class exclusive recipes on or off.>>2204893i would be weekend servers arent really my thing, and bringing that group along is a bad idea.its a fat fetish group, i dont trust half of them to keep it in their pants and i dont trust the other half to behave in a chan environmenti also know it'd just end with me in a ghost town. again.
>>2208269>its a fat fetish groupSounds like perfect buildfags to me.
>>2208274you make the architecture joke but no, no.>the farmer is the unreliable one, he kinda does building but he's finished exactly two builds over ~5 servers. he was the blacksmith for the first server and we had regular tool shortages, we also had to beg him to work on iron and steel. also has a bad habit of not listening.>the chef doesnt even try to build even when i tell him to at least make an attempt. also cooks "just enough" (i'll just say he's motivated by starving sounds)>the lumberjack, makes good progress on his builds but he was a no show for the last server.>everyone else has come and gone between servers and does the other jobs. but none of them have ever finished a good build either.im the only one that really makes finished buildings. at least i try to while blacksmithing/mining for 5 people and exploring for better ruins blueprints because nobody else will even try doing either of those things.next time i boot up the server for them im probably going to put up a reminder that says "dont know what to do? just build something" and see if that gives better results for the server's lifespan (it wont)
>>2208269>i didnt really like the spawn anyways, it was a peninsula with other landmasses more than a few minutes away.>honestly i think i'll ignore oceans and join nOG
>>2208287i get that nog's bad too but when i say peninsula i mean it.the landmass that was connected to it was more or less just copper, lead, sulfur, and black coal. had to sail elsewhere for everything else.there are no translocators in this snippet of the map.and to top off the peninsula was bear and wolf territory, we made pits but they just kept spawning for some reason.
>>2208295thats scaled 1:4. for comparison here's the area around spawn on the nOG map upload from last thread at 25% zoom.the surrounding landmasses are notably closer and there's a translocator within a reasonable distance.
