I've heard people say that PLA's combat mechanics make level less important, but I don't really understand how. How is damage calculated in PLA? What other mechanics differ from the mainline games?

Basically, moves are made more powerful such that you can pretty easily get a OHKO on a 'mon even if it's several levels above yours. Most battles are just back-and-forth KOs where the player wins because he has more pokémon. The final trainer battle is the only difficult one.
