XY's animation is better than DP's, but I think DP has the better overall presentation in terms of story, and Dawn's side of things are stronger than Serena's. If you're into more low-stakes adventures focusing more on comedy (with some cool battles), SM maybe more up your aisle. You have to put up with Ash looking stupid, but once you get used to it, the art style is actually really good. AG is probably the best mixture of the two, especially once you get to the Hoenn League and Battle Frontier. May's Contests are better than Ash's Gyms, but the non-battle episodes are especially good. The Indigo League is genuinely great as well. I can't really recommend Johto or Best Wishes, though they do have stuff going for them. Their valleys aren't worth the peaks that they get. Journeys is also okay, but the good parts of it require knowledge of past events.

Genuinely wouldn't care if Ash's return was a quick pass-by cameo similar to what they did with Yugioh or whatever. It wouldn't ruin Horizons for me and it wouldn't make the show any less fun. The Donuts had the personality and drove the plot, and Ash was just there to battle the bad guy, legendary, myths. He might as well have been a robot, a Terminator with 100% less personality only there to say someone liners and fire off a Tommy.The biggest diff is that it became much, much more obvious in the Reboot series. Take away the shoved in ThunderCat and the movie can still function on its own. Take Ash away and Margo can still fulfill his role. So because his fuckboy loser ain't really the Hero, he hates it.
