A thread dedicated to the art of Ken Sugimori. It doesn't have to just be Pokémon either; art from other Game Freak games he drew is fine too.
But the old art because his new art is soulless trash

>>56034870I know it's in vouge to hate Sugimori's new style, and his old style is definitely better, but I really like this piece.
Has he ever drawn Incineroar? Or even other nu-starters?
>>56034870Does anyone have that Sugimori drawing with the base stage Kanto and Johto starters with one of the the devs.
>>56038440Here you go.
What artists are the best at imitating Sugimori's old style?Raciebeep (pic related) is pretty good, but are there any others?
>>56043030pokeyugami on twitter did cool stuff for a while but it's been a year since he posted anything (probably he got ninja'd)
>>56034891That is NOT Blaine
>>56043592Blaine has an interesting design history. Long story short, that is him in certain adaptations and may or may not be a disguise.
>>56034889That looks almost exactly like a gen 3 sprite.
>>56044015Ah, so it's an Imposter Oak situation where an early draft was used for tie-in products, which resulted in something that got cut appearing anyways?
>>56045071Differemt anon but what happened was Blaine was intended to have the design seen there and the Silph Co chief was to be a trainer and use the current design for Blaine as his art. I guess when they dropped him as a trainer they liked his design enough to swap it into Blaine and instead have the original Blaine design go unused despite having it featured in art.
>>56044067Bushi Seiryuuden has a very "Gen 3" feel to it. (Or rather, Gen 3 has a very "Bushi Seiryuuden" feel to it since BS came first.)
>>56046907Doesn't the game also have the original version of gen 3 tracks?
>>56046971Yeah.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPTV1zXvD2Q
>>56046907lol lookz better than gen 3
>>56046907The shading style and colors used is reminiscent of gen 3, but the level of detail is miles better. You can actually gleam quite a bit from this screenshot alone. By this point in GF's career. Pokemon wasn't as huge a phenomena beyond its home country and this was true into GS' development. GF didn't make another non-Pokemon game until Drill Dozer and by the time GS actually released, Pokemania was right around the corner and TPCi was formed. From what very little we know of RS' development, concepts for the Pokemon and region started around summer 2000 but actual work on the game didn't really begin until around late 2001-early 2002. You can tell that Pokemon being a pop culture superpower by 1999-2000 pretty much killed any chance the company had at trying new things and also killed its work ethic as they had to meet tight deadlines and at that point did not have the resources to deliver. Also, more on topic, people tend to throw RS into "nupokemon" artstyle wise when it's really just the same as gen 2 but with digital coloring. The Crystal-RS era is probably my favorite Sugimori style. It still has the sharp edges and retro-futuristic outlook but the proportions and use of colors are more "mature". >>56046971Pulseman's first stage was reused for Barry's theme and Veil's theme was the inspiration for Silver's theme.
>>56034870I think it's cool that this specific piece came from so early in Gen 2's production that it's actually depicting the beta Ruins of Alph - note the tower with the dome and the waterfall coming out of it to the left behind Ethan/Gold is the same building seen in the middle of pic related. It also gives you a visual hint to try using your Pokegear at the ruins, meaning the radio signal thing is also something that was planned from the start and may have actually done something.
>>56047478Image was drawn in 2000, anon. That also reminds me of how Kecleon's original artwork didn't have the back spikes upon reveal in 2001 until it was added closer to release.
>>56047482Then Sugimori was working off of some really old screenshots, because that's clearly the same beta structure, waterfall and all.
>>56047508>>56047482This happens a ton. For example, the lady from the Latiken pic reappears in another pic, Sir Aaron from the movie got reused as Riley in DP.
>>56047440>GF didn't make another non-Pokemon game until Drill Dozer>You can tell that Pokemon being a pop culture superpower by 1999-2000 pretty much killed any chance the company had at trying new things and also killed its work ethic as they had to meet tight deadlines and at that point did not have the resources to deliver.Sugimori's gone on record saying that his biggest hang up on his career is that he'll be forever known as the Pokemon artist rather than for his career as a whole and that he regrets never trying more to branch out to making a manga.
>>56047440I always thought the "they didn't know how to sprite stuff beyond the original Gameboy" excuse for gen 3 was bullshit. Makes one wonder how gen 3 would look if more time and effort was given.
>>56047440>GF didn't make another non-Pokemon game until Drill DozerFalse. Click Medic exists for PlayStation.
>>56049136I should have said after GS.
