"Generic animals or beasts" these are very prominent in newer gens like boltund or Finizen (yeah he turns into a jobmon later). The best type of pokemon design is the ambiguous monster that has several themes going on for them, take blastoise, its a turtle with cannons and cat ears. Venusaur is a toad but the only features that hint to this are the warts and a wide mouth (no jump, aside from the LGPE animation, no tongue), so it was always believed to be inspired in synapsids (the face and ears, the awkward quadruped pose), the plant finishes the design by giving him an extra feature. Jobmons are mostly one dimensional even if they are more fleshed out.
On most cases Amiguous monster > jobmon > animal + element.

Typhlosion is objectively speaking better than Charizard because the Flying typing is bad for it, especially prior to decent special Flying moves existing. The Cyndaquil line's learnset in a Gen 2 playthrough is also a lot better than that of the Charmander line in Gen 1(which will basically never get Flamethrower unless you hold off the evolution to level 42, which you should do but casuals don't know about)

Also in GSC it had ThunderPunch (still running of its Special Attack), while Charizard had no types of special moves outside of Fire in RBY and didn’t even get Thunder Punch until Gen 4.
