I feel middle starters are underrated. Everyone loves the base starters for being cute and the final evolutions for being cool, but the middle evolutions typically get glossed over despite spending the most time with you in game. They typically evolve around the 2nd gym and don't evolve again until around the climax of the story. The bulk of your adventure are spent with these guys. They have too much compromise. They should just throw out the design guidelines and design unique middle stages like Pupitar or something. It's such a waste to make a design solely to bridge the gap between two superior designs.
