3-4* candies are pretty plentiful, most story units are kinda mid, I'll list the few good ones:
- misty & starmie rare Spdef buffer for new accounts, has evasion and decent heals
- skyla & wanna covers gauge, defence, heals and matches really well with xerneas and misty as free supports for busted strikers
- Cheryl & blissey, decent offtank
- Brock & onix, worse skyla but can be useful in stadium anyway

Aside these, the only other good 3-4* are some BP or event pairs you get dupes from exchange so no need for candies

Use characters you like, just supplement them with beefier units. I leaned on Skyla and Sycamore for a long time. Blue and Blastoise are pretty disgusting too.

Ration level-up goods the best you can, try to get a whole team to 120, then two teams, then focus on bringing up individuals to 140. Don't worry about move levels or any other crap for now.

I kind of miss having to manage resources. I started playing 2.5 years ago and spent the first ~6 months scraping to upgarde whatever I could after each monthly rally, but then the Giovanni and Mewtwo event was rerun and I was able to spam the rewards and I've been rolling in sodas, and books ever since.

I try to take advantage of the bonus points but it also depends on the move level of the units and notably supports, if the bonus units are just at 1/5 and barely do anything or don't even have MGR then I'll simply slap there a solid off-type support or damage dealer and increase the difficulty that would bring me more than a weak x3 bonus team.
Sometimes the HSE, depending on featured type, is so heavily limited to seasonals and fairs it becomes a torture, while in other occasions I don't have enough cookies to get Adrenaline 1, Mind Games 2 and Defense Crush 2 to exploit on those stages or other giving +2 Def or +2 Sp.Def on entry, now it can come to lacking sync orbs for grid expansions but DC mode made me unlock few relevant ones that will always be useful in other modes too.
