In my personal opinion the series has felt authentically "Pokemon" up until gen 9 when they just went full ugly woke no effort. Japanese channers seem to agree with me. We all bitched about the laziness of gen 8, and rightly so, but it was still enjoyable in spite of all that. Gen 9 just felt gross. There's a good game in there somewhere but it was underdeveloped and feels overall like the gaming equivalent of vegan imitation food.

NPC battles rule in the games where the trainers have interesting teams. I never get bored with the trainer battles in XD and Emerald. I'm playing XD right now with a Dusclops that knows Earthquake and a Xatu. If you are somehow morally opposed to using Earthquake and Psychic 500 times a play through, maybe this isn't the series for you.
