the edgy pokedex entries would totally fit the original design in an alternative dark mature pokemon game

i would be interested in a monster collecting rpg with designs like this
im not saying pokemon should take this direction, and i dont know the appeal, but i think this is cool in a spooky way

the artist likes chonky legs

its interesting to see what concepts they were throwing around, and its curious how very little of this stuff actually made its way all the way to the final product

can you see anything (other than obviously cacturne) that ended up in an actual pokemon game? even a subtle easter egg?

the grimy little creature looking through the eye holes of the shell is a cute design element, but its conceptually overlapping with the digimon syakomon

gecko dude
the unown markings are the wildest part, because the rest of the designs i cant see as having anything to do with pokemon but this thing is unmistakably supposed to be a pokemon, and i cant imagine an official game that looks like this
>>
>>56592089
cheese monster
>>
>>56592175
The face of this one (>>56592089) and its hands does give off Nidoking/Rhyhorn/Graveler/Golem vibes
Like a lot of the Pokémon "style" is attributed to Ken Sugimori, but in reality it's all because the designs were filtered through him, some ideosincracies from their original artists remained

If I had to guess this one (>>56592352) became Manectric if only because of the bare-basic concept of an "electric dog" was destilled from "a dog made out of electricity" to just "normal dog with electric motif"

wasn’t there rumoured to be a GameCube Pokemon title in the works with a proper story mode with wild encounters that ended up being colosseum? i can see the 3D style artwork fitting into that, perhaps trying to appeal to older kids with edgier tastes
>>
>>56592707
ngl, it remings me of that ultra beast StakaStaka(?). The one that is a piramid of black blocks

the lead artist and character dsigner for coloseum was Hiromoto-SIN-ichi, who was known for edgy manga for a teen audience, which would fit a game that would be darker than what we actually got with coloseum

>>56592124
the fact that it doesnt have eyes reminds me of some digimon
the most human looking digimon dont have eyes to make them seem less human, and its used to make some of the monster designs seem scarier and less natural

its the opposite design style that pokemon usually has, they typically are friend shaped with clear anime eyes (for the most part)
>>
These designs would be kickass for a SMT-themed fan game.
>>
>>56592707
I would take this as a ultra beast over Stackatackata
>>
These all look like generic jrpg enemies
>>
>>56593970
generic isnt the right word, these designs are off the wall
>>
>>56592707

this concept art from 2004 looks so cool compared to all of the shitty gen 5+ pokemon that are for trannies

why did everything, not just pokemon, have to become so lame

Something to keep in mind is we havent seen all this guys stuff so some Pokemon could have been based on his work but we cant know.

What you posted is possibly Absol

>>56592352
Manectric

>>56592396
Clampearl. And maybe its evolutions were inspired by this guys weird art we havent seen too.

>>56592452
Yep Metagross has those hallowed out eye things both cactaur has too.

>>56592707
It actually has an Unown eye under the front rock.

>>56592298
Maybe Cascoon??? Maybe Sharpedo??? It looks very gen 3 without being anything specific somehow

I love this design. It reminds me of Kazuyuki Kurashima's characters.

He also designed Greavard, too.
>>
>>56591920
Azhdarchid cacturne is actually terrifying. Instead we got lumpy mascot cucturne

>>
>>56591920
I presume that late in the design process all Pokémon undergo a “Pokémon-ification” to clean up any potentially scary/edgy aspects, so beta designs are more of rough sketches and drafts for their shapes and colors mostly
>>
>>56591920
god I hope more stuff like this leaks so cool and creepy at the same time
>>
They look like Fear and Hunger enemies minus the dicks
>>
>>56591920
i wanna see gardevoir in this stage of development
>>
This guy's art is cool

>>56595573
There's an old interview where they said they got a lot of feedback that Gen 2's new designs felt really "kiddy" so they wanted Gen 3 to be "cool" again, so they probably told the concept artists to go as edgy as possible and then reeled it back in to something that still felt like pokemon

I swear you fuckers have no idea about game design. The concept art stage is balls to the wall - every idea goes sort of stuff. Then you come together and chuck out the bad ideas and start consolidating everything to fit the style of the game. I don’t want to see ANY of you fuckers criticise or speculate about video games until you know how they’re made. Retards.
>>
It almost seems like a waste, these designs were good enough to be in an actual released game, even if it wasn't Pokemon.
>>
>>56591920
What where these for and who drew them?
>>
>>56592124
I wonder if Mega Swampert is a result of them holding onto one of the designs.
>>
>>56595817
Fuck you were not experts on game design or anything, it’s not like it’s my… favourite hobby… maybe I should learn a thing or two. I’m American though I shouldn’t have to learn LOL!
>>
>>56595777
SOULESS
>>
>>56595867
It’s just from the concept of stage of development on RSE. Why do people know nothing about game design?
>>
>>56595644
Thought the same. The artstyle does have some vague resemblance.
>>
>>56596171
just because they obviously wouldnt have appeared in the finished game doesnt mean people cant like them
>>
>>56596383
I’m not saying you can’t like them but people are like “whoa what where they thinking lmao” when this shit is pretty average
>>
>>56592863
>>56594309
>>56595777
cant believe we got cheated out of this in favor of fucking manectric
>>
>>56592863
But we can see in the leak thats not the motif at all, Manetric is just the midstage to a star based evolution line.
>>
>>56593298
>>56593034
Raw
>>
>>56594123
If this is from the concept stage of Ruby/Sapphire, then it's probably contemporary with Crystal's development. Probably around 2001, not 2004.
>>
>>56592707
it's an early idea for a gecko pokemon?
treecko.
maybe all the early dark designs are the earliest gen 3 designs. they knew they wanted a gecko pokemon in the game
