Looks better, I guess it was changed because the 3DS couldn't run it (that said games like Monster Hunter Stories were more visually impressive and ran fine on the 3DS, bad optimization maybe?)

Games like Monster Hunter Stories and Sun and Moon were "extended memory" games (the console boots into a different mode so it could use more memory than for a regular 3DS game.) I don't think extended memory games were a thing back when X and Y were released?

Extended memory mode existed at launch, it's always been a thing. Maybe they didn't want to use it for whatever reason but it's always been there
