They are only "sexy" in the context of a time period that nobles and wealthy people wore them, which then made everyone start wearing them, and theie association with prostitutes. Modern kimonos are also a lot thinner and designed to be flattering rather than the historically warmer outfits designed to be layered a lot more and show off multiple fabrics as a show of wealth. Before the kimono, women wore both skirts and sometimes pants with what is basically a large tunic-like shirt.

The Celestica people seem to be the stand-in for the Ainu, but are all gone for the most part, and the only one(s?) we really see doesn't seem to resemble the Ainu.
