As they better established the worldbuilding of the franchise, they decided that it takes place in a sort of alt-earth, where the geography is vaguely similar but place names and histories are vastly different, so they retconned out these direct references to better fit the new world they've established.Not sure why this concept is so hard for some people to understand, unless they're really die-hard for generation 1 and original pokemania and don't like the idea that some of that was retconned.
