I could be wrong and there could be some document in there somewhere with Lyra's character profile or something explicitly saying they wanted a new character.

I love Kris because of that 90s-esque anime girl design you don't see anymore. Plus, like May, she's one of the only female protagonists who's still styled somewhat like the male protagonist, and thus actually fits the classical image of a Pokemon trainer.
