>>56780862Look at previous episodes where Charizard completely dominated battles early in the journey. This was before the whole "Oak your mons at the start of the journey" formula was cemented. Ash was stacked early on with a tamed Charizard and catching more mons have become difficult as many Johto would overlap with his remaining Kanto mons.It was a good dramatic way to "thin" the herd as it were. And Charizard returning was always a big event. Eventually they gave more and more reasons for his kanto mons to leave, Bulbasaur had to sort out his Oak'd mons, Squirtle goes back to his old gang to help out the town, until at last they realized they could just have Ash start from scratch whenever he's in a new region except with Pikachu.
