And sometimes there's the other gender character who also shows up intermittently to play a support role. If The Origin was an actual series instead of a four episode OVA, that would have been fine.

Went by ‘Jamy de Jadegant’ whilst in disguise.

‘Pokémon: La Grande Aventure!’ in the original translation of Glénat (which also imported some mangas only translated by Chuang Yi in English) gave all of the main characters animéy names. So Red was Sacha and Rival Oak was Régis.
That gave me an idea of mixing it partially with that.
Rald is Emerald btw, the name of Ruby/Brendan in other media too.
Then again, Pokémon Pocket Monsters (the very first manga) had their own Blue and Yellow characters too, and they never had that Green/Blue switch in English. So Blue was a male nerd obsessed with ghosts and Yellow was a malicious guy disguising as Red and trying to frame him into various stuff, kind of like Fein and Wes from Pokémon Colosseum.
France was the first big weeb nation, long before 4kids was a thing. Our European dubs like Sailor Moon were based off of theirs.

Whitney I think would be really obnoxious as a main character, at least with the Pokemon anime writers. She's a girly girl who's a bit of an airhead, acts bratty, and cries a lot. That's going to be very difficult to work as a main character and not make people absolutely miserable.

Bugsy gets to act as the booksmart one of the group, spewing your Pokemon trivia or whatever needed for the episode, him being a Bug type trainer and Johto being a region that favors Bug types in many ways (wide variety and the bug catching contest) means he could have a wide variety of Pokemon/possibly even a rotating team. Him still being a young boy and a bit childish can add some light-heartedness to the team and for younger viewers (Gold I imagine in this anime would be like Ash, but a bit more cool or laidback so some Sonic to him, so in contrast Bugsy can be a bit more dorky and "spongeboby").

Clair I think is actually the best choice. Blackthorn is next to New Bark, so you've got lore to make it not entirely out of place. The idea of traveling with the end-game boss would be cool as hell. Clair is related to Lance so you can tie him in throughout the season and build him up. Clair has an extremely fun personality of being arrogant and full of herself, though she can have the power to back herself up. She could act as both a mentor to Gold (and Bugsy) as well as perfect comedic relief with her personality, like a Jessie but a bit more competent and not evil. Additionally, the games put the plot thread of Clair not being able to achieve her full potential as a dragon trainer in her clan because there's something she doesn't "get", and that can be why she decides to travel with Gold and Bugsy.

Putting Pokemon into perspective with the main example being the Pokespe Manga which had the rotational protagonist thing being a thing since Gen 1 you'll notice that they are written basic enough to fill out the usual goals or what's mainly available to keep the player engaged for distinct amount of time (League, Contests) but with various differences in motivations and hobbies that often not make the League and Contest stuff look obsolete in hindsight because they serve as an means to an end of their characters. Taking Hilbert's manga iteration Black as the example, he's a text book Game Protagonist you'd expect in Pokemon

As the predecessor DP has the Dawn's counterpart Platinum, a rich girl who grew up behind closed doors with a notable naivety of the outside world, only really getting around to engage with it with the outsider stand-up comedians Diamond and Pearl. Or another gen back you have Ruby and Sapphire with the opposite gender turning the Contest and Gym road into a bet to see under pressure who has the bigger commitment towards their dreams. Making a female trainer doing the gym challenges is only a job halfway done if there's nothing for them to commit to throughout it all because realistically, what stops those making the battles to handle them like the female gym challenger is just a guy written and designed in everything but it's actual gender?

I don't think we were robbed. The only actual change would've been the ending of each season, with the protagonist winning the League and retiring. Since Ash was only the male protag replacement, nothing else would've changed past Johto, we already had May, Dawn, etc. Also, the movies would've been doing crossovers between the generations, much like tokusatsu, passing the torch and whatnot. And BW would've also been a shitshow because the Tohoku earthquake fucked everything up there.
The anime's problem was never Ash, it was the writing and the attitude. They never tried hard enough. It was terribly formulaic because Pokemon is not a story-focused series and the writers couldn't be arsed to come up with interesting original stories beyond basic worldbuilding.

Being a commercial is not unique, and not bad either. 90% of all anime is commercials - for manga, video games, idols, pachinko machines, the fucking JSDF, etc. Original anime is extremely rare for a reason. The thing is, a good studio can take the material given to them and turn it into something great regardless. There are even cases when anime surpassed its source material, like K-ON! or Demon Slayer.
And I'd say that early on, the Pokemon anime showed a lot of potential. They legitimately tried to take the simple and limited game and turn it into a story worth watching. They practically created characters like Brock and Misty from nothing, and it worked. Problems began after the franchise took off into the stratosphere and TPC demanded all rough edges sanded off in the anime.
I watched the first two seasons as a kid and loved them like everyone else. Then I took a break from Pokemon, and when I saw D&P on TV as a teenager, I was stunned by how bland and sauceless it was compared to the show I remembered from my childhood. At first I thought that I just grew up, but after I rewatched the original, I realized that it wasn't just nostalgia, the show was legitimately entertaining.

Ironically DP is better than the first season
It's got real battles, a compelling vilain (agent J/team galaxy) an actual rival (Gary does fuck all).
The problem is that it's bogged down by dragging on (100+ episodes) and season 1 had that soulful 90s anime aesthetics.


People should really rewatch the first season. Most of the episodes people remember fondly (Gisele, pikachu vs raichu, Sabrina, the ghost maiden, the island of giant pokemon, bill's lighthouse, goodbye butterfree) are all in the first 30 episodes!!

After that, you get some good episodes but it's mostly fillers and it quickly gets boring because Ash keeps having his badges handed to him by defeating team rocket instead of engaging in a real battle (Save for Blaine)

S1 is iconic but it's really middling at the end of the day. It was simply a fantastic piece of zeitgeist to go along with the games everyone was playing

As a kid, those first two movies are fucking amazing though, regardless of whether or not they were butchered by Saban. I say this as someone who had the opportunity to watch the first movie, Our War Game, and Diablomon Strikes Back last year in a Japanese theater in Shinjuku. That's exactly what happened, Electric Soldier Porygon was not only a huge enough blunder that all Japanese programming had to enforce the "DON'T SIT CLOSE TO THE SCREEN DUMBASS" warning before shows from that point onward as well as revise all programming to tone down flashing lights, but it was huge enough to reach overseas news and further taint Pokemon's western image when it was already getting beaten down by claims of being racist (Jynx's entire existence, seeing stereotypes in Brock's gags, etc.) AND being put under constant siege by Satanic Panic crusaders.

Gary is a better rival because his arrogance is treated as the joke it is save for his fangirls, you want to see him fail, and actually get taken down a peg. He gets his ass handed to him in the Kanto league, but when they finally do the anticipated battle in Johto, Ash wins - not only that, but Gary ends up swearing off competitive battling from then on because the kid he'd always looked down on, who he was so sure wasn't a threat, beat him fair and square at the apex of his career and denied him his dream.

Like Gary, Paul is arrogant, the viewer wants to see him fail, and for him to be kicked down from his pedestal. I agree it could have been done better. Well, the ending of DPP is trash anyway so it fits the theme.

As for Gary and season 1. I suppose it's less of a shonen and more of a fun, surreal anime from the 80/90s so it's fine if he is a big jerk who accomplishes nothing.

The problem, as it's been noted, is that most of the creative juice was used during the first 24 episodes.
It's not bad after that, but the early run is just kino after kino
