Dumb idea:What if the pokemon world were invaded by a more threatening/terrifying villain?Which would sound more interesting to "shake up" the dynamic of the world?>"Final Fantasy" inspired villain>"Dragon Ball" inspired villain>Eldritch horror beyond your comprehension (i.e gigyas)
>>56837591Add more detail to them?
>>56832970Any Romhack with dead Rhydon?
>>56837806An adaptation of Shin Megami Tensei's Law/Chaos system could be cool, maybe outright including YHVH and Lucifer would be a bit much but making cults that worship Arceus and Giratina would work. Hell, make two rivals that gradually become crazier and lean into their alignments more as the story goes on. You could even change up how battles work with Pokemon alignments synergize with each other to make you stronger like in Strange Journey, the idea is open-ended enough to let you put as much work in as you want to be interesting.
>>56837806I would say eldritch horror fits with Pokemon the best, stuff like Necrozma/Ultra Beasts, Eternatus, and even Arceus to an extent kind of fall under that umbrella already. You could easily kick it up a notch and still keep it within the bounds of Pokemon. Final Fantasy-esque I think you run the risk of it just coming across as edgy, to be honest. Dragon Ball inspired could be interesting. like a Frieza or Cell type villain who is an alien or maybe even a hyper-intelligent Pokemon, that could be something. I think this works better than FF because it's new for Pokemon and takes the stakes up a notch, but it's still saturday-morning-cartoonish enough to feel natural in Pokemon. I mean, early Pokemon was heavily inspired by Toriyama, just look at Mewtwo. could be cool to lean into that some more.
>>56837810That's the hard part though. I'm trying to figure out how to get a concrete texture for the building on the right. I don't know how to do it without making it a simple grey monotone slab. Also shading is hard as shit. I've been trying to learn it but feel like I'm still dogshit at it.
>>56837591Looking at this Pokémon-style image, I can offer some key tips to improve your pixel art buildings and achieve better blending:Color Theory and Shading:Use limited color palettes (3-4 shades per color)Create shadow colors by shifting both hue and value, not just darkeningStudy how the Pokémon buildings use darker shades for depth and lighter ones for highlightsStructural Guidelines:Start with simple geometric shapesMaintain consistent perspective (notice how the Pokémon buildings all share the same viewing angle)Use reference lines to keep heights and proportions consistentDetailing Tips:Add architectural details (like the arched windows shown) to break up large surfacesUse a consistent pixel size for similar elements (notice how all windows have similar proportions)Create depth with overlapping elements (like how the roofs overlap the walls)Specific Techniques:Practice "dithering" - alternating pixels of different colors to create textureUse "anti-aliasing" - adding intermediate colored pixels between contrasting areasCreate repeatable tiles for walls and roofs

>>56837806Aliens like the ones from Arrival.
>>56837806>>56838015Not Arrival, I meant Annihilation.
>>56837942What do you mean 3-4 shades per color? Like if I have a red then 3-4 different shades of a lighter and darker variant of that one red? Also I figured out the structural guidelines one myself after trying to make some buildings. There's no dithering in either of my images right? The official assets use some kind of banded shading.
>>56838027That's a ChatGPT reply don't worry about it
Ashen Frost got an update the other day, still not done but it's definitely wrapping upIt's pretty good I like it, some of the puzzles are gay not like Pokemon Sors tedious though
>>56838027Yes, exactly! For example, if you're working with red, you'd have:Your base redA darker red for shadowsAn even darker red for deep shadows/outlinesA lighter red for highlightsYou're very observant - you're right that these Pokémon buildings don't use dithering. Instead, they use what's called "banding" or "cel shading" - distinct bands of color that create clear divisions between light and shadow. This is a hallmark of the Pokémon art style. You can see it clearly in the red roofs where there are distinct stripes of different reds creating the shading pattern.Looking at your buildings in the image, I believe adding those distinct bands of shadow (especially on the roofs and walls) would help them match the Pokémon style better. Each architectural element should have at least 2-3 distinct shade bands to create depth.Would you like me to break down the exact shading pattern used in one of these Pokémon buildings? For example, I could count how many distinct color bands are used in the red roof sections and explain where each shade is placed.
>>56835020shiny galvantula from a moemon hack
>>56837591The real answer is to make every asset in your style.
>>56837591>>56837935Side from all the other advice you've gotten, and assuming your trying to emulate the FRLG buildings you should try copying more of what they do with certain details. For example the windows on the other buildings have the blue gradient and the tan for (what I assume is) the window sill. On your buildings you outlined the window sill in the same shade as the facade of the building which makes it look flat, but there's also shading on the left of the windows and sillI've tried mocking something up real quick but I'm on my phone in bed so it's not perfect and your color pallet is a bit fucked from using some colors from the existing buildings with some other colors you added yourself just as one idea of how to make things more uniform while also keeping the building looking interesting and not too flat. This certainly isn't perfect, and may not be the vibe you're going for with the pillar/post on the front of the building but it's slightly more in line with the other buildings. I'd also pay attention to small details like how many pixels are used for things like the shadows under the roofs and keep it the same, your shading was too thin and too light and it makes it barely noticable causing the building to appear to lack depth. There's also this >>56838858 but that will come with more practice. If you copy the existing style to learn what to do and how to do it, you can adapt it with your own style as you improve. Alternatively you can just do everything from scratch and learn as you go that way which is also fine but probably way more work than I would assume you're intending.
Will essentials ever be updated again?
>>56838976Oh also the angles on the inside of that structure in the right side of the building are off given the way the buildings are situated. If that isn't something intended to be interacted with/entered is consider changing it entirely (maybe even removing it?) but if it is something you can enter into them the angles definitely need work, I'm not positive how as it's late and I'm not an architect but I know it looks wonky as is. That said I do think it's a cool idea and gives a very cool additional detailing to the building.

>>56836871I glazed your mom's donut last night if you know what I mean
>>56839144cringe
>>56838976I thought about this too but the problem with this approach is that even with the official assets all the building use different shading. Like your edit makes the windows match the other official houses but they still don't match the pokemon center or the marts which is what I was originally basing my windows off of. There's even a random building that has dithering on on its door while no other object in the game does as far as I can tell. It's fucking retarded.
>>56840840>the problem with this approach is that even with the official assets all the building use different shading.A lot of them follow the same principals, the highlights on the left side of the building facades, gradients on the glass guess and windows (even with small windows like the pewter museum) the Pokemon center has the windows up high so they are shaded by the roof, lower windows don't have that.>There's even a random building that has dithering on on its door while no other object in the game does as far as I can tellThe Pokemon daycare door and I think the door to the underground passage buildings have some dithering, but not a lot. It's interesting to note, but it's just a different style of door that those buildings use, I wouldn't focus on the dithering too much. Spriter's Resource has all of the buildings for FRLG I'd recommend copying the pic into paint, or whatever program you use to sprite, and zoom in and compare the similarities; buildings that are flat like oaks lab, celadon mansion and the houses in pallet have have that highlight I mentioned, but there are also rounded buildings like the gyms, marts and Pokemon centers where both sides are highlighted compared to round buildings like the game corner, bike shop and kind of the department store that have the right side shaded and the left highlighted. Not every building is the same but you can sus out some design elements and apply it to what you're working on.
>>56839112It's dead already?

trying to analyze the original KANTOOOO dex and see patterns in what mons there are and the order they're placed in the dex. https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_Kanto_Pokédex_numberThese are my observations so far:https://pastebin.com/qF5U0twx (notes were too long to fit into a post so I had to upload to pastebin)
>>56844125They are more or less grouped together in the order you find them, thats all. Later dexes do try to keep the same archetypes in the same order but I wouldn't call it a pattern. Even shit like the starters first and the legendarily at the end gets ignored in some games.
>>56837806Exploring other planets is definitely a way to shake things up.
alright be honest bros, is making an exclusive move that takes all hazards on the field, hits an opponent with them, and then sets them all on the opponent's side overkill?
>>56844922So it's like Rapid Spin except it moves all the hazards to the opponent's side? I think that's fine as long as you don't go full retard with the base power like gen 6 Knock Off.
>>56844125>>56844232>hey are more or less grouped together in the order you find thempretty muchlater dexes are mostly the same, the reason there's patterns is because the games all follow the same basic progression and need certain monster archetypes. basic weak monsters at the start of the game, and rare, strong monsters at the end. and GF has adopted certain motifs for these monsters, like the early game monsters are always rodents, bugs etc. then late game you have pseudos and legendaries. cool idea to look for patterns, but that's about as deep as it goes. I think if you want to get a better understanding of how dexes are built, look at how Pokemon are distributed throughout the actual game. the points in the game at which you get each Pokemon, and also when they evolve is (usually) well thought out in giving a satisfying power curve throughout the game, and the dex arrangement is downstream of that.
>>56845236more or less just a 0 bp attack that requires hazards to be there at all, and just deals damage like they got hit by spikes, stealth rock, sticky web, etc depending on what's there
>>56844922>takes all hazards on the field, hits an opponent with themKinda like a multihit move that does more damage the more hazards there are or does damage of every type of hazard in the field?Could be cool as long as the power is low and fails if there are no hazards. >and also when they evolve is (usually) well thought out in giving a satisfying power curve throughout the gameIt is always well thought out in the region they are introduced, then the level curve completely breaks in any subsequent game they are in.
>>56844922A move that deals damage depending on what hazards the opponent has set up against you sounds like fun.
>>56845356also got that sorta planned in for a different move, but had to make sure that it didn't turn into knock off 2 so it might be a bit underwhelming
>>56845376The opponent being hit by all of the hazards, then setting them on the opponent's side sounds like a bit much. Even in the busted power-crept metagames of the Switch titles, the best you get for giving your hazards away is Court Change. But I quite like the other anon's idea of making it a multi-hit move similar to Beat Up. Each hit could be a different type, but I imagine checking for immunity would make that a pain.
>>56845392oh wait i misunderstood lmao. like, the other move i have planned is just a decent, reliable move that deals slightly extra bonus damage if stealth rocks is on your side.the other move here >>56844922 >>56845330is generally just gonna be exclusive to 1 frailer mon, but if it is too overkill, i do like the idea of just making the opponent's side's hazards hit 'em one at a time
>>56845332>It is always well thought out in the region they are introduced, then the level curve completely breaks in any subsequent game they are in.true. I was thinking just in terms of each region individually, but that is a good point. you could get into analysis of how individual game design interacts with an iterative franchise. but I'll save that for another time.
>>56845451Poorly is the short answer. New pokemon are definitely designed and distributed with gameplay in mind but the old ones always seem to be put wherever they feel like.Pretty sure the only region that put any thought into balancing old and new pokemon was Johto.
Can't tell if I'm overthinking this or not but is there any easy way of taking one of these arrays and then setting 3 different events to give the pokemon listed in them? The only way I can actually make it work right now is having three events with a bunch of conditionals inside rpg maker to check the variable. It's annoying.
>>56845619I have no clue what you're trying to do nor have I ever used essentials, but to simply your snippet try using a map to tie the arrays to the associated number.something like this, haven't used ruby in a while so the syntax is probably not right
gens = {1 => Kanto_Starters...}def pbSetStarters(...)starter_set = gens[$game_variables[26]]...
>>56846179>
>>56846244It works on /g/ :(
>>56846179I figured it out. I was just overthinking it. I like to try and avoid setting variables if possible but I can just clear them after I'm done with them anyway.
>>56842288>>56842473>>56842495Nothing wrong with edge of itself but most of the writing of these hacks, including ones that are lighthearted are terrible no matter how you look at it.Pokemon stories in general sucks or non-existent because the main point of these games are gameplay (as should).
