Also just realized the anon from a while back who mentioned to me a new hard mode for their hack where you can only save at the PC was you, right? Good shit on the implementation and very cool take on difficulty hacks, making routes, dungeons, and especially the gyms much more gauntlet-like.

If any hacker wants to try their hands at modernizing Peridot more at some point you have the devs blessing.
If you haven't tried it yet I highly recommend it, it's up there with Gaia for me in feeling authentic.

depends how ambitious your hack is. you'll need to learn a little bit of basic coding. if you want any custom art assets, you'll need to learn those skills, unless you're okay with outsourcing. other than that, the most important skill to have is just being self-motivated and able to learn. you're not gonna make it very far if you need somebody to hold your hand every step of the way, but if you're confident in seeking out and parsing information, you'll be fine. making a hack isn't really that hard per se, the biggest obstacle is burnout.

Gen 3 is probably more beginner friendly just because there's so many tools and resources available for it, but work in whatever you're passionate for. your ability to stay motivated will be the biggest factor in your success or lack of, so make something that your heart is in.

If you're interested in Polished it might be worth just playing it whenever you want, the full 3.0 release with its custom 9-bit engine has been in the making for a good while now and I don't think anyone knows when it's gonna drop, lots of gen 2 hacks were put on hold for it to be complete. I get wanting to wait though since I am too lmao.
Right now I'm planning to do my first run of Fool's Gold, but there's so many crazy and cool designs that it's hard to pick out the 6 I want, maybe I should just wing it.

As for a money drain, my first thought is you could have betting on 1v1 NPC battles like the area in Oblivion. You get to see the two pokemon beforehand and choose which to bet on, but the movesets/AI decision making can often be terrible or ridiculously good to fuck over your judgement. Could also be funny to pay to watch seedot somehow wipe out a garchomp for example.

I want to do a challenge run with a friend where we battle after every gym

haha I was planning to do the same. mostly because I've been making my maps over top of old ones (probably not best practice, I know) and I mapped over one of the upper floors, not realizing that apparently all the Pokemon Center maps are somehow linked in Porymap? still not sure how that works, but now all the upper floor maps have been changed so I was just gonna block them off lol. nobody actually uses them, right?

also, I started making brand new maps for interiors after that lol.

That's actually a good idea. I also thought about giving dragon a few more weaknesses since most are psuedos. I want to get rid of immunities too. I don't even know how all this shit is even going to play out. I've been working on this game non stop for the past week+. I'm stealing the stat rebalancing from Radical Red and I reworked EVs to tie attack and special attack EVs together to try and make mixed attackers more useful. I'm also thinking about experimenting with pokemon having multiple abilities. I don't know for sure but I have a feeling that in the end it will be a clusterfuck.
