To be perfectly honest, there are a lot of great starters. Squirtle, Chicorita, Snivy, Rowlet, Charmander, Torchic, and Fenniken are all great choices.

Chesnaught is my favorite grass starter along with Sceptile. My favorite Pokémon overall is Heliolisk. I'm not uncertain that I like it, but I am certain that I like both about the same amount, to the point where leaving either one out feels like a lie.
