In Gen 6, Pokemon would still act in turn order according to their base form's Speed the turn they Mega Evolve, rather than their Mega form's Speed. This is why Protect was so common; it let you scout, yes, but it also let you Mega Evolve for free and not have to deal with, say, Mega Beedrill getting outsped despite its Speed increasing. SM changed this so that a Pokemon would act in turn order according to its new form's Speed, and that's what broke Mega Metagross.
