Ingame trainers usually have more than 1 of the same species of pokemon in their team. Have you ever had more than 1 of the same pokemon in your party? I haven't.

There's nothing stopping you

I've... never thought about it. And it's usually more than one of the same Not Fully Evolved Pokemon too. Thanks for the suggestion anon. I want to try it for my next replay of Gens 1-4, but I'm afraid my OCD about type coverage will stop me. I haven't done a monotype or NFE run before either.

That said, what Pokemon are good to have multiple copies of? Dragonair/Kadabra since they can learn each of the elemental beams/punches? Or just go with my favorites and struggle with the rest of the game because they're not that good?

I used 3 diglett's and magnemite's thinking they'd evolve that way upon certain levels but then they evolved individually kek

cringe, eevee teams are basic bitch as fuck

This is just one of those things where you have to remember how different you are compared to the NPCs. You are playing a video game as the main character. But for the NPCs, that's real-life for them and most are just regular people with regular lives.

This
And in some weird ruleset playthrough I had two Staraptors and two Skarmorys. I think it was like "you can only use Normal type moves" or something

Yes my team is six chimechos

I have. I beat Red with 6 Dragonites. I'm using every Pokémon I have in XD and I caught 3 Sandshrew

This is exactly my reasoning as well.
When it comes to my team, I'm not just some trainer, I'm a kid trying to be the best, the closest NPC class would be ace trainers who use a variety of powerful mons, so that's how it makes sense to build my team. But for most other NPC classes, their teams are more just gonna be made up of a few fitting companion mons, even repeats.

I always had 2 gyarados as a kid
