from 2013-2019 the series was fucking obsessed with doing nothing but Kanto references and throwbacks. The only time this worked was with Pokemon GO because that had mass normie appeal anyway, but by and large most of the thirtysomethings who grew up with Kanto had long stopped caring about the series

games after this actually attempted something new and it shows
