It would be cooler if you had to 'climb the ranks' by searching for higher ranked people and asking them for official matches because they are hard to get in touch with. Or maybe some people are scared of dropping ranks so they surround themselves with a gang and go into hiding and you have to sniff them out. Lots of options instead of the usual gym battles -> elite four -> champion loop.
