Iris went on to win the Unova league offscreen despite showing no evidence that she had a desire to become a league champion the entire time she was with Ash. They could've done the same with Gary. Still urks me that the champion is considered Lance despite all evidence pointing towards the Indigo league being strutted like the RBY games while every other league has their 4 members and champions.

It is strange though that they chose to go the Prof. route with Gary. Should have had him become Champion in the first place, lose to Ash in Johto, and then become the Gym Leader of Viridian with Giovanni fucking off to go do Giovanni things. Because in the anime, it's still pretty implied that he's the Gym Leader and Rocket is still a major issue in Kanto.
