so the reason they're all rock type is because they were brought back from fossils, right?

back when they roamed the Earth, they weren't actually all rock-types... right?

Maybe much like our planet, the Pokemon world in prehistoric times was a harsh place going through all sort of growing pains like tectonic and volcanic activity, and as such there was an evolutionary advantage to being a rock type.

Game Freak:
>let's give incineroar helping hand in gen 9 as if it's not already good enough as it is (we're also buffing it even further in gen 10)
Also Game Freak:
>yeah, we replaced defiant with competition for empoleon and shifty has wind rider now, but meganium having anything other than leaf guard would make it too strong
>yes, HMs are no longer a thing in modern games but we're not going to give tropius any buffs to compensate
>why yes we did take away rock polish from aurorus in gen 8 and gave out close combat like candy, and as a bonus it still doesn't get power gen (because fuck you)
>also aurorus will NEVER get to have terrestrialization (because fuck you again but we also made sure that it rewarded strong pokemon like all of our gimmicks do)
>and as a side note we're not bringing back inverse battles for balancing reasons (and that it would overwhelm the ADHD iPad kids when their lucario gets OHKO by ancient power)

Remember that Game Freak deserves ALL the hate, but people are too busy sheepishly hating on Meganium to realize this.

There is a case for those two just coincidently being rock types already being either full rock or part steel.

Alternatively it could just be that rock types for some reason were the only ones that left fossils behind that are sturdy enough to revive. Its possible that the Galar fossils would also have been rock types if they werent a fusion of two different pokemon.

I've always appreciated what they TRIED to do with these Pokemon, but they forgot that IRL when the paleontologists were assembling bones wrong, they were also still trying to assemble something that kinda made sense.

They weren't just sticking random shit together like lego pieces, and that's where the Pokemon were taken too far and made retardedly jumbled. Good idea, horrible execution.

I found it kind of weird how it took until gen 4 for there to actually start being dinosaur fossils pterosaurs are not dinosaurs and for gen 6 for one of them to be a T Rex. Like it's as if they started with scrapping the bottom of the barrel and then worked back towards all the obvious picks.
>>
>>57081201
>rail road spike expressly evolved to stab things
Based on what they eat (known due to coprolites), it’s for schucking the bark off of cyads to allow him to eat the tasty cambium underneath.

It would take a particularly foolish predator to get itself into shanking position against an iguanadon.
>>
>>
>>57087370
It's cause the first game was inspired a lot by the weird side of science (zombie mushrooms, clone experiments, polygon lifeforms...) and so it picked it's fossils from the more unique side of ancient life. Plus, why would gen 1 need a Trex when you had already dinosaur like creatures running around like nidoking

I probably shouldn't have said "expressly" bark sure but breaking nuts with that seems far more unwieldy that just swiping at a predator or rival going for your neck. Defensive traits like tusks or in Iguanodon's case a thumb spike usually have multiple uses but I can find no paper stating Iguanodon used the thumb for just foraging and multiple suggesting it was for combat.
>>
>>57092804
>Shaped like a knife
>biomechanically easy to plunge it into the guts of an opponent
>doesn't get in the way of walking or foraging
Nu-dinosaur enthusiasts always try to de-sex any dinosaur and remove all their "cool" weapons.

>the thick skull (with numerous impact injuries) in Pachycepahlosaurus was for display

>Therizinosaurus claws cant be used for anything
>Smilodon teeth would break if used for anything
>>

What they really should have done is kept the gimmick but rewarded the player with what the ACTUAL fossil-mon looked like if they shut the shit together themselves.

>biomechanically easy to plunge it into the guts of an opponent
Not really though. It takes a dumbfuck predator to get hugged, and bio mechanically it needs to basically hug whatever it stabs. It doesn’t have your ball and socket shoulder allowing it to swing its forelimbs wide to shank a nigga like someone holding a knife hammer grip, and it can’t really thrust past its own head forward. A predator is going to come from the flanks, and a forward facing spike with that shoulder anatomy isn’t useful from the side, only forwards.

And a regular ass stomp with its front hooves is probably enough attack that way. Maybe they are shanking eachother when fighting over mates or whatever, but it’s not a dimorphic feature, so either both sexes fight for sexual access or it’s not for display/sexual competition (one of the main reasons why Pachycephalosaurs as bighorn sheep expies is unlikely, leaving the head for more general combat like muskox at best).
>>
>>57092804
And other defensive armament is more easily provable. We have Tyrannosaur fossils with healed punctures that match Triceratops spikes (and enough Triceratops frills with Tyrannosaur bites that we know they ripped the head off of almost every triceratops they killed, in order to get after the meat of the neck), we have Allosaurs with healed Thagomizer wounds from stegosaurs, etc etc.

apparently there is a Neovenator with a weirdly Iguanodon thumb shaped hole in it's gastralia but it's in a private collection; Molnar, R. E., 2001, Theropod paleopathology: a literature survey: In: Mesozoic Vertebrate Life and mentioned by Darren Naish in Dinosaurs Britain
>>
>>57096221
>arm can extend forward in a stabbing motion
>dino can stand up on hind legs
>arms can sweep from below and to the sides to threaten side stabs on front facing enemies
Being able to threaten enemies from the front is good for anyone that wants to keep their eyes on the opponent. It also has two arms. Its a natural defensive tool - why are you so fixated on removing plausible and fun ways a dinosaur can defend itself?

It makes total sense and is cool, but maybe that's the problem in its entirety.

Now tell me how a utahraptor's claws weren't used for hunting.
>>
>>57098553
>>57096221
Also forgot another argument
>it would take a dumb predator to get stabbed
Like one that just sunk its teeth in an iguanodon? You're not making a strong case here - the thumb spike disincentivizing direct attacks due to its existence seems like it working as intended
>>
Drew a picture showcasing a potential normal use case of defending with a thumb spike.

Please cease fucking with dinosaur weapons. They absolutely were using these as weapons.

Not all pterosaurs were beaked, plenty had teeth. Yes, the beaked ones tended to be bigger and more impressive, and I wouldn't mind a fossilmon based on Quetzelcoatlus or Hatzegopteryx, but Aerodactyl is perfectly valid as a cartoon Pterosaur.

The Azhdarkid Pterosaurs are neat, as tall as giraffes with a giant tongs for a face and quadrupedal, yet still able to fly.

The secret to why Pterosaurs can be so much larger than flighted birds is that birds have to launch with their hind limbs and fly with their forelimbs, but Pterosaurs can launch with their forelimbs and fly with same, so they're much more efficient at allocating musculature.
