How were you supposed to know??

You werent. The game was short as fuck, and 90% of the gameplay was trying weird convoluted shit to figure out how to fill you pokedex.
>>

Something you zoomers don't get nowadays is that sometimes you weren't supposed to know. Sometimes devs put things in to games that they didn't guide you towards, that were just there for people who kept playing, who kept trying things, who kept exploring. Games didn't used to hold your hand with excessive quest markers and tutorial NPCs and Dora The Explorer style "I wonder if I could get a GYARADOS if I got a MAGIKARP into the WATERFALL?" dialogue. Sometimes you'd just find something fun and then rush off to school to tell all your friends about it.

Talk to friends in the schoolyard, buy one of the many gaming magazines or dedicated pokémon (official or unofficial) strategy guides or good old trial and error.

the internet existed.

kek so true

By being part of the target audience (japanese) who are expected to have a basic understanding of eastern mythology.
>>
By following the natural human instinct to attack Magikarp.
>>
it's been a while since i played Snap but i recall spamming pester balls or using the flute was the answer in most cases

Based and accurate. From throwing apples or pest balls, you learn that they knock Pokemon back. And then you see a Magikarp out of the water, your curiosity should make you wonder if you can knock him back in. It's that simple really.

By being Japanese and knowing the classic fable of carp who leap over waterfalls become dragons, which is literally part of what Magikarp and Gyarados are based on.
>>
The only options are to take pictures or throw apples at things, eventually you play it enough to get everything or hit a roadblock because of the damn button in that level, that you just happen to get the Gyarados.

I really love that New Snap kept that philosophy. The amount of interactions buried in that game are staggering.

Yeah... Boomer cope. They put things like this and the barrel in Sonic so you'd get frustrated and whine until your parents bought you the $16 Prima guide.

Keep telling yourself that, didn't know this existed, let alone a single person that bought one.

Back in the day, video games had an element of discovery and surprise to them. Oh sure, gaming magazines and the dial-up internet of the 90s revealed some things about the games that we were playing, but it wasn't anything like today, where we now often know everything there is to know about a game before it even releases. It sounds silly, but when you're a kid, and you screw around for hours or days or whatever in a game only to stumble upon something you had no idea existed, it was really exciting.

This is why I can never get around companies giving copies to streamers before release. I'm sure it must do something to sales or they wouldn't do it. But... It kinda just defeats the whole point of buying and playing a game for yourself.
>>
>>57102471
They do it because its cheaper than commercials and advertisement and has about the same ability to produce sales and get people interested. It doesn't increase sales, it's just cheaper to do it that way than getting an ad on tv or on ign/youtube/etc.
>>
>>57102475
Well as i said I understand there would be a rationale behind it or they wouldn't do it. But kids see the streamers play the first few hours of the game, they go pick up a copy for themselves and everything up to that point is already spoiled. It's just kinda lame.
>>
>>57102491
I mean in reality for kids, most of them will watch the entire game being played and probably not buy it at all and would rather watch it be played. For adults, sure that sucks, but I remember playing demo discs back in the day or watching trailers that spoiled tons of shit too, quite a bit different, but still. It does suck, but it is whatever.

I think it negatively affects certain things more, Pokemon is a good example. We know the entire damn dex before the games even come out anymore and avoiding it, while possible, is not the easiest thing to do if you still post here after all.

Damn your trainer is cute as fuck bro

Reminds me that I had no idea toedscool existed before seeing it simuddebly sprout out and run across the screen causing me to shout WTF IS THAT and instantly add it to my team. Felt childlike discovery for the first time in a while.
>>
>>57102887
This is why I watch as little trailers as possible for games I'm genuinely excited in. They give away way too much, when you find it out on your own it's a really cool feeling.
>>
>>57101025
these graphics still hold up quite well. its kind of awe inspiring to see gyrados
