The hebes.
I wouldn't call myself engaged, its a time sink. It's an easy game to pick back up and play through again to spend some time. The games have a lot of replay value when there are lots of different pokemon you want to try out, or even use the same ones in a different manner. The games are simple but still pleasant thanks to how easygoing they are. They're portable so I can play them at work or on my commute. And having favorite pokemon is a real thing, they're like favorite characters that keep coming back up and they make up for being in simple-ass children's games by being my favorite dudes.

>>57103173Unironically, a fan of the fandom here. I dropped off the mainline Pokemon bandwagon around Gen 5, and have not really gotten back into it since. Didn't get a 3DS until around 2016 to play Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, but even then I did not feel a great urge to get back into Pokemon until sometime during 2017/2018. Even then, the mainline content on offer was underwhelming for me then, and even more so now with how Pokemon has developed. It is not bad on a strictly "objective" measure, but I have a number of pet peeves and creative differences in how Pokemon has shifted and changed since 2013. Be it story, lore, the Pokemon designs themselves, the gimmicks, or how the companies behind Pokemon have become... Dickish to say the least, the only thing that draws me back in is the stuff fans produce. Even then, that comes with an asterisk attached due to the fandom majority inevitably incorporating those elements that break my personal immersion. But the core of Pokemon, that magical world, those wonderful creatures that made it feel alive? That unexplored horizon still yet to come? It draws me in still. Pokemon has sunk its talons far too deep into me for me to be rid of the urge to explore it for long. I just do so by writing my own little copefics, filtering for the good stuff that I like, and indulging in the occasional fan game here and there. Me personally, I have since taken off to try and create my own iteration of the Pokemon world here and there. Exploring different concepts and iterating on things like type shifting, localized environmental variants more detailed than just the regional forms, poking back on old concepts and breathing new life into them, giving a few mons the spotlight they otherwise have yet to gain, that sort of thing. I cannot say my output is perfect, but it fills the void enough for me to be content. I can at least say I have given those old reimagingings of at least one of the Galar starters new life, if nothing else.
>>57111492"hebe" has a short e at the end

>>57103173It's just comfy I guess. Reminds me of brick walls, graffiti, and nature. I like the exploring nature aspect along with the safari feel to everything. SWandSH didn't really have this feel but it grew on me eventually. I guess Galar just looks very different than anything before it. Just didn't have the same vibe. I'd argue SV was closer to the original vibe of Pokémon. Idk if I want every Pokemon game in the future to be like this but it was fun and comfy. I like how all the Pokémon had new textures. It was alot of fun taking pictures of all the different Pokémon. SV was the first time in years I've actually bothered to finish the dex.

I could come up with a lot of reasons but ultimately it's about collecting something valuable, and the fact that I can use those collectibles in a battle system I genuinely really enjoy. Oh, and I can transfer those collectibles forward to future games and experiences for the rest of my life. I could beat the latest games with a Pokemon that originated on a completely different piece of hardware, years ago, while being the exact same Pokemon. Yeah your Pikachu is cool, but mine is cooler because it came all the way back from XY on the 3DS. And mine has cool ribbons that represent the adventures I've lived with it. And so on and so forth. Then there's the legendaries and mythicals and... yeah, there's just nothing else like it really.
>>57163133Oh and of course, those collectibles morph into entirely different creatures, and sometimes there's variants and shit depending on the circumstances. Like Paldean Tauros and how it wasn't enough to just have a dark one but also a rarer, cooler Fire and Water variant that's exclusive to each version of the game. God I love that shit.
>>57103173Fetish art ofc

I'm an autistic 30+ faggot who is still attracted to the idea of living symbiotically in a world of magic creatures where their existence is tied to the very nature of the universe and we need to learn to love and empathize with those complex differences. Pokemon needs a fucking social game similar to harvest moon or something where you can just live in a community of pokemon owners and live a domestic pokemon life.

>>57103173It's the most bang for your buck monster tamer with a focus on exploration. That's it really. I mean, I can do SMT and Digimon runs but they don't hit as good as pokemon in that regard since there's so few hidden areas to search for unique monsters and when you do have a hidden area it's usually empty existing only for a quest where you unlock the ability to evolve or fuse that specific monster. Also even post dexit pokemon still boasts the largest roster of monsters. The only one that went over a base pokemon game was DQM Dark Prince by a technicality since it counts recolors as unique monsters where Pokemon doesn't do the same for forms even if they evolve into something else like Paldean Wooper, they'll both share the same number while Slime, She Slime, Mottled Slime, Buddy Slime, Metal Slime, Shadow Slime, Mottled She Slime are all different monsters. Then there's the way they handle DLC, other tamers will usually either give a recolor away for free that you just lose if you evolve like Professor Agumon or just sell one quest with one monster like Dagda in SMT V but pokemon you get a new maps and a total of about 200 returning mon with a sprinkle of new mon for about 30 bucks and you don't even have to buy the dlc if you want the monster since you can just trade them from another game or import them through home when the dlc drops. As much as I don't like not having every pokemon, it's better that we get a massive chunk of them in DLC than being sold piecemeal.

>>57103173Mainly the lack of good competition in the monster collecting/training genre. Very few games have been able to even remotely capture the aesthetic Pokémon was able to achieve, and those that got close died off 10+ years ago. Pokémon GO is also one of the only location-based AR games a lot of people play, if there were some actually good games in that category that people played I'd play those games instead.
>>57204946If your metric for comparing other monster collecting games is to Pokémon, then yeah, you're going to be disappointed. That seems an unhealthy perspective on any game
