Just finished the League in Modern Emerald (modern preset + phy/spe split). It was piss easy, but it was nice. I still have all the post game ahead of me.
My Aggron didn't join any fight, btw. He was only there to fill a spot. I'm replacing him with Metagross now.
Hoenn is so comfy, bros. It was fun, having to come up with a decent gen 3 team using modern rules.

I'm sure I've said this before, but it would be a lot of work for something that functionally doesn't do much that Gen 3 or Essentials can't already do, except for touch screen mechanics which are awkward to use on an emulator anyway. if you want to make a game that looks like Gen 4, it's easier to just use ripped Gen 4 tilesets in Essentials than to build a whole new engine.
basically, people won't do that kind of work unless there's a really good incentive to do so, and frankly, DS hacking wouldn't really offer much that we don't already have. so it's probably not a priority for a lot of people.
besides the touch screen, the only other thing you can't really do on existing fangame engines is the semi-3D graphics, but if people really want to make 3D hacks I think it would make more sense to focus on later fully 3D titles that actually offer a significantly different experience than what we already have.

yeah honestly his only crime was actually admitting to it. I don't think theres anything wrong with using AI in romhacking. personally I'm using it to help write filler NPC dialogue and name trainers, among a couple other things. although I wouldn't admit that anywhere but here cause of the stigma. but seriously, what's the big deal, romhacking involves a shitton of tedious grunt work that AI can help with. and it's all non-profit anyway, so people shouldn't cry about losing their jobs. if your livelihood is based on making commissions for non-profit fangames, you should reconsider your choices.
anyway, I suspect it's going to become a much bigger part of romhacking going forward, trannies can cry all they want, can't stop progress.

Wrong, the 2.5D style of the DS era was perfect for Pokemon and has uncapped potential, both gba and essentials hacks look fugly 99% of the time and essentials in general just feels wrong from the movement to the animations etc.

Personally not the biggest fan of the idea but I do understand the appeal. My ideal system (for the campaign, this would be turbo cancer in pvp) would be something similar to the old school final fantasy ‘magic level’ system, where each move would be given a level and all your moves have a shared PP pool within that level. So for example your close combats and fire blasts of the world would fall in level 8, and each mon has, say, 3 or 4 charges of level 8 moves before needing to heal/restore, whereas you can still pretty much infinitely use scratch and tackle by that point in the game

You’re thinking about it in terms of “a Pokémon game” when I feel like in this instance you need to be thinking about it in terms of “a JRPG.” PP was- much like mana systems before it- a way to naturally limit and test players resource management and tenacity when traveling through dungeons. This is why all the old legendaries have Pressure: at the end of the dungeon you face off against this monster that drains away your magic twice as fast, meaning you have to be even more careful about managing it than before.
Some of the most powerful moves already take a portion of your health bar (recoil moves) making that into a game-defining mechanic seems like a bad idea.

Yeah I think I'm gonna try and make the game not use a resource system for moves, should be fine since I'm not planning on having immunes or heals in (or if I do they will come with some drawback like you heal then you skip a turn or something), gonna have to be careful here since no move resource system + no ability to run from battles = softlock potential is there if not careful.

The DS games have more depth in the envirement being semi-3D instead of one flat surface, more momentum to the movement, more opportunity for extra details etc.
I know gen 4+ hacking is still hard to do but if we have to start investing in it at some point

It wouldn’t hurt to try. Pokémon XG and XD saves are weirdly compatible. If you start in one game, save, and load up the other, then you’ll leave off where you last played. However , thats just one example. Theres a possibility of corrupting your save by doing this in the other rom, so be sure to keep a copy of your save before trying this.

Legacy Edition and Silasts Gen 5 style Platinum projects are very interesting! Looking forward to Aurora Crystal and the new B2W2 Redux engine as well.
I am also just a spoiled consumer of others hard work, so I will patiently sit on my hands until the day these projects get fully realized

There wouldn't be a going rate but instead you pay for each map made, I'd assume it wouldn't cheap to do though, for an entire region.

I've a lot of mapping and tileset experience, so can definitely help with that.
Even if you're using a public tileset, I can also edit/make sprites if needed.
