yes, i grew up in an area that put down anything that wasnt sports and myself and 2 other kids were the only ones who played. after around 4th grade i kept to myself, but i do remember when gen 4 was being leaked through corocoro and feeling like the coolest person for knowing the new pokemon first. definitelty crazy seeing how normal it is now when i felt like i was holding a secret until high school graduation.it was deserved though, i roleplayed as an espeon on the playground.

Most people didn't give a fuck and those that did weren't in my social circle so most of them either didn't notice me or I was completely oblivious to anything they might have said behind my back. The one kid who tried was a smaller, scrawnier nerd than me that just wanted to seem cool like a tiny yappy dog trying to assert dominance so we just ignored him. He ended up playing with the rest of us by time gen 5 came out when we were finishing up high school.

Where I lived if you weren't looking to become a rapper or a gangster or a sportsball player (usually foot) you were gay and if you played games they had better only be shit like Fifa, COD or some sort of violent game. Got made fun of a lot over the years, put down a lot when trying to join in activities and it wasn't until I finally met other nerds with a "fuck it, I am what I am" mindset that I could finally properly enjoy nerdy crap without some feeling of shame attached to it. Thankfully becoming the Funny Kid who peaked in their teens helped stop a lot of the teasing over being a dork in the later years of school

The way I see it is only people presently in their 30s were likely bullied or mocked because Pokémon wasn’t a nostalgic commodity when this group was playing and they would’ve been playing during middle or high school where it would’ve been heavily shat on After Pokemania, The franchise was largely held in contempt because people were tired of seeing it everywhere. Anything cutesy was infantile and gay and Pokémon doubled down on the cute the very next gen.Anyone in their 20s grew up with social media in the cultural shift towards geek chic, nerd culture and introverted interests. They likely never experienced any real bullying for playing unless they were extremely annoying about it. As these groups age and make up much of the space on social media you begin to get a narrative where no one was ever bullied for playing or enjoying Pokémon and it’s surreal to think that anyone would be. If they only knew.

I'm 30. The fads during elementary school went in order from:Pokemon>Digimon>Yugioh>Bionicles>B-daman. By the time we got to the B-daman era most kids my age "grew out" of stuff like this and only the nerds got into B-daman. The rest got into normie shit like fashion and crap music.
