MPM episode 02 might actually shown how to fix Ash and Serena's lack of good dynamics. People had actually believed that old Ash had returned because he and Misty had interacted the same way they did during the OS series. Basically writer need to imagine how OS Misty/Dawn would behave in various circumstances and how OS Ash would have reacted to their behaviour and channel that on Serena and Ash.The anime did tried to make Serena behave like Misty in some circumstances but they kept XY Ash as a walking action figures instead of a character which is why their dynamic didn't improve. The same reason Ash and Korrina's dynamic didn't become as good as Ash and Dawn despite Korrina being the better version of Dawn was due to XY Ash being a wooden plunk. Good character interaction is a two-way thing.

If Yajima was actually smart instead of being a Narutofag then he would have treated Serena as a replacement for May who can't reappear due to her VA issue.
