Maybe contrarians on this site, but normies love Lugia.
>>
imagine being born in the 50's or 60's and then when you're 43 your retarded 8 year old says he wants the pokeyman pikanose game on the game boy color. you walk in to k-mart, send the wife and kids to the food court to get a pizza from Little Caesars, you make your way to the electronics section, you see that seductive little minx Avril Lavigne singing skater boy or complicated on like 20 tvs at once, then the cashier gives you the choice between a rainbow turkey or some kind of neat looking cool colored beast.

yeah my parents got me Silver
>>
>cool giant silver dragon bird
>gay gold rainbow bird
>one was in a singular anime episode for 10 seconds
>the other got an entire movie
Huh, i wonder why people like Lugia more?
>>
>>57154992
>I thought people preferred ho-oh?
do you live in bizarro world? lugia is by far more popular. it got a lot of marketing from its movie
>>
>>57154992
Every kid was crazy for Lugia. The poor fuckers who caught Lugia in the Gold version didn't even have Aeroblast on it.
>>
>>57154992
Lugia had a movie
>>
>>57155075
Sacred Fire is a better move than Aeroblast though. But I agree, Lugia is a better design than Ho-Oh (though the Johto Beasts> Kanto Birds in terms of design)
>>
>>57155084
Ho-oh can live without Sacred Fire, Lugia is a limp dick without Aeroblast.

>>
>>57155132
Compelling argument, I shall submit it to the Board of Legendaries and we'll get back to you by January 5th, thank you.
>>
>>57155087
It has to because Sacred Fire is special in Gen 2 and doesn’t get the boost from curse that Lugia’s Aeroblast gets.
Fast forward and Lugia doesn’t need Aeroblast to function and Ho-oh cannot work without Sacred Fire.
>>
>>57154992
Who had a movie built around them at the time?
Well, there you go
>>
lugia was always cooler

>in the show for 10 seconds

Ho-Oh inspired Ash to go on his pokemon journey.
Seeing Ho-Oh taught Ash that the world was a big and wonderful place full of mysteries even Prof. Oak didn't know about.
Ho-Oh set off the entire pokemon adventure
Ho-Oh is more important to the anime than Lugia ever was
>>
>>57155492
Ho-Oh "appeared" but wasn't actively shown, rendering this moot.

Here's the real answer you zoomershits.
In the 90s and early 2000s, being GAY was completely unacceptable, and Ho-Oh was the RAINBOW bird.
...
You're not fuckin' GAY, are you OP?
...
Anyway, with the rise of the absolutely abhorrent trannies, the gays have become honorary straights and Ho-Oh is predictably rising in popularity.

Because the box Pokemon that stands out more to little boys and looks "cooler" always sells mores.

Doesn’t matter what ripples it made to the show, the fact is that it was an appearance that lasted a few seconds.
No one is going to give a shit. Especially when the other bird got an entire movie for it

nah even if they made kyogre look slightly cooler ruby would have sold more regardless

Movie.
Despite all the modern memery about Shudo's mommy issues and plot of the movie not really making a lot of sense, Pokemon Movie 2 was very well received when it was released. Meanwhile Ho-Oh appeared in anime once, in first season, as teaser at the end of first episode.

It was pretty rare to find someone with a Gold cartridge back in the day. Everyone I knew had Red, Silver + Crystal.

I think this switched up with HGSS, when it was clear that Gold was not only the name of the main, but that it was the 'canon' version. But yeah, for years, a lot of people assumed Silver was it.

To an older, more developed brain who understands that level of significance, sure.
To a retarded toddler who has the memory of a goldfish, those 10 seconds were forgotten as soon as Togepi entered the picture, even more so when other GS Pokemon started appearing to directly promote the upcoming game. And then comes Lugia, getting an entire movie, full of screentime where it's also the hero of the movie, contrast to Mewtwo Strikes Back where the star was the villain.

Red, Silver, Ruby, Leaf Green, Diamond, Soul Silver, White, Y, Omega Ruby, Sun, Ultra Sun, Sword, Violet, Brilliant Diamond

The company went against his intended themes for Lugia. He was one of those artists that didn't give a shit about success and the integrity mattered more. So he drunk himself to death.

As I grew into an adult, I was SHOCKED to learn how popular Umbreon (and the other eeveelutions) is -- especially among guys?

When I was a kid, eevee and its evolutions were for girls. Eevee was one of the stereotypical "cute" pokemon looking like a toy cat/dog, and it evolved further into larger cute cat/dog things. As such, it was seen as something for girls.

But to my surprise, Umbreon is one of the most popular pokemon of all time, and the rest of the eeveelutions aren't far behind.

Wtf happened?
>>
>>57154992
I like ho-oh more

>except the coomposting would've been supercharged but thats irrelevant
Knowing coomers, heavily doubt it would've made much difference
>>
>>57154992
Lugia was way more popular than Ho-Oh back then, had more prominence in other Pokemon media
People saw Lugia as an epic dragonlike creature and Ho-Oh was just a big bird so not as interesting
>>
>>57160802
>People saw Lugia as an epic dragonlike creature and Ho-Oh as just a big bird
the root problem of big birbs being shafted in, well basically everything
>>
>>57160202
Seems like the problem is you.
Eevee and its Evolutions debuted with each of their trainers all being male.
I never heard anything like this. Eevee/Eeveelutions were pretty much loved around the board and everyone had their favorite.
>>
>>57160877
I guess it depends how fagged out (by 90s standards) your community was
>>
>>57160890
Eeveelutions are the single most popular evolutionary family in the entire franchise. They are wildly popular among both boys and girls and have been for decades. This didn’t “just happen”.
Something is wrong with you.
>>
>>57154992
>thinking people like a bird weak to the flintstones for the extra time over a cool dragon
>>
ho-oh is more important to the franchise as a mysterious golden bird ash sees in the sky during the first episode of the anime than as an actual pokemon
>>
>>57154992
i bought silver cuz it looked cooler and still does
>>
>>57160202
Umbreon was one of the few Pokemon which are naturally colored pitch-black (a color that appeals to boys), which combined with the brooding culture of the 2000s (which lingered from the mid-to-late 90s) made Umbreon which is also sleek and shiny (thanks to the gold rings and red eyes) an attractive choice; one that despite the eeveelution status looks kind of badass. It's also one of the only dark types you could actually use in the maingame.

Then Pokemon Colosseum came along and forced everyone to use it, which instantly catapults it to the same level as a real Starter pokemon.

It doesn't matter that it's a stallmon that is very challenging to use effectively. All the above factors functioned to cement its popularity with at least everyone within the age bracket of its first two gens.
>>
>>57160890
I do remember Eevee being for girls but Umbreon was also one of the easiest Dark pokemon to get and to young boys at the time Dark pokemon were cool.

1. They were new
2. They were "Dark"
3. They beat up on psychic pokemon which everyone knew were the strongest.
>>
>>57154992
Everyone who grew up realises Ho-Oh is clear
Everyone who didn't and became a manchild incel thinks Lugia is better

>>
>>57164113
A lot

New beginnings. Skies and Oceans. Crystal is the literally the middle ground between the two. Life and exploration.
>>
>>57159609
There isn't much reason for Lugia to be water-type either. It wasn't born in the water and only went there to retreat from its actual home that was destroyed by lightning.
>>
Ho-oh is just Moltres 2.
>>
>>57164445
That is one of the most forced things I have ever read.
When I hear Johto, I associate it with old burned down pagodas, and Ho-Oh fits fantastically, even though I am a hardcore Lugia and Silver fag and I don't like the turkey.
