Realistically what could they have even done to follow up with dragonair? It's a big blue snake with gay little card captor sakura ears. It was a dead end design, they should have dropped dratini and made dragonair a single stager for the little girls, then made a real evo line for dragonite.

Not to mention the games predate the anime by over a year and given their rough development from an unproven studio, an anime would not have been in consideration until AFTER they're proven successes.Fact of the matter is Ken Sugimori's artstyle became objectively cutesier during the Gen 3 era. Particularly around the time of FRLG when he went back over many of the old designs and "smoothed the edges" so to speak. Look at old Lapras compared to the way it looks now with it's shorter face and lighter color scheme. Or how Gengar used to look somewhat imposing in it's old art and now it's looks more mischievous than outright evil. To say nothing of what's happened to Mewtwo in recent years.
