'Morning, night crew.

Aside from based Aipom getting its first fan depiction in a decade, looks like that treehouse they were climbing up to was already occupied. Or there was a hostile takeover and the kids were trying to get rid of some squatters. Or I fell back asleep three times while trying to type this out. They stepped into a Mystery Dungeon monster house and they're about to get that Agility/Fury Swipes womb-combo.

Good observation anon. But the truth is actually as simple as Britny antagonized the Aipoms in order fight them along with Piper due to the belief that both of them together are an unstoppable duo. They’ve never lost fighting other kids before so what could go wrong.

And note: this was before Piper could lift trucks and bolders so it went as well as you think it did

TQ: I wanna think I'd be developing other OCs instead but truth be told I'd probably just be gaming. I prefer having these threads as inspiration and challenging my creativity. It's been years since I last discussed this kind of stuff with other people (since I stopped using social media). And /tog/ made me realize how much I miss it.

Even though I've been admittedly quiet lately. I still have this TT that I never submitted. It was about drawing your OC riding one of their Pokémon, and although my OCs don't have mountable Pokémon I thought this would be funny.

Seeing the templates in the last thread made me kinda wanna make one of my own too...

>but truth be told I'd probably just be gaming.
Yeah, same. In fact, I've actually been meaning to get back to gaming, something which I kind of haven't really done because I've just been trying to hurry up (not rush) with finishing Black Blaze so I can then focus on studying artwork. I think that what really motivated me to start on artwork (and I guess writing as well) was just having people that 1. I mostly like and 2. aren't completely nameless or brainless like Twitter communities. Truthfully I've never really wanted to act upon my latent desire to draw just because I couldn't find anyone to share it with (Twitter followers aren't real desu, also it's Twitter). It's kind of why I said that I only draw and write for attention (but only from people I like) and why I would stop if the attention dries up. Basically "doing it for the money" but instead of money it's attention.

I used to be a participant of a roleplaying community (and I still nominally am) but due to constant drama and attempts by the alphabet soup to poison it, they're kind of dead, although we're working on something that if it actually gets released (it's been in the works for nearly half a decade) might revitalize it. That franchise is actually where the previous incarnation of Alex comes from. Ever since that community became barren I've just been too bored to create until now.

You guys ever stop to think about how in the first two generations and Stadium games Poke Maniacs were depicted as these edgy, serious-looking trainers (despite not being very difficult) and then afterwards they were changed to be manchildren cosplaying their favorite shitmon? I might make an OC or minor character based off of the Gen 2 one, either a parody of edgy OC cliches or just standard chunni or just standard edge. I mostly just like the design.
>>
>>57174512
I have, and you and I had the same thought, that black trenchcoat and delicious hair floop is simply too good a design to leave behind.
For what it's worth, PokeManiacs have always been Kaiju nerds. That trenchcoat mafia look is how they used to actually dress during the 90s.
Truly, we didn't know how good we had it.
Then in Gen3 onward, they started cosplaying as kaiju suit actors.
And I don't know what the fuck happened to the ones in Paldea, but they make me deeply uncomfortable and I swear I can smell their thrift shop stank through the screen.

Alrighty, here we go!
Turns out a couple cards were accidental duplicates I had downloaded by mistake. (also I had forgotten to upload a few cards from my phone to PC too before the deadline, so I didn't include those)

https://imgur.com/a/Mp5372k

Thank you all so much for participating in the second /tog/ booster - CROSS ASCENSION!
Let's get the details...

Card Count: 121 (RECORD!)
Pokémon Cards: 96
Trainer Cards: 25
Type Majority: Psychic (18)
Full Art Cards: 15
Lv.X Cards: 11

Thank you all very much for creating and submitting your cards!
Please post your favourite card/s made by other anons!
Next Booster is a ways off, around April. So we have a nice long break.

Again, thank you for taking part in this booster, and I hope you enjoy!
>>
(Note: some cards that have artwork not by me do not have the artist's name on there. I only realised during sorting.)
>>

>>
>>57174598
>seems a little... self-defeating?
Well yeah, but I figured i shouldn't really upload anything after the deadline. It'd be unfair for me to do so, and I had plenty of time to submit my phone's card creations before the deadline.
>>
>>57174606
I'm just saying, I would cheat if it were up to me. I made the rules, I'll bend them too.
Also I'm seeing quite a few missing here. I know for a fact I uploaded Mankey, Primeape, Scrafty, L'Coeur, and my own version of the Premier Ball.
>>
>>57174647
Couldn't find Mankey or Primeape on the drive, my apologies.
Premier Ball was rejected due to having made a Premier Ball of my own a few weeks before that one was uploaded, and L'Couer I couldn't make sense of ornsee working in the slightest.

Again, apologies.
>>
I don't know why I didn't include Scrafty in the final list though, so apologies for that. Really not sure how I missed it.

That's what has ruined a lot of the things I used to enjoy, at least in online circles, and why I'm not on social media anymore. Even when I avoided certain circles there would be people questioning you for liking "problematic" characters or whatever.

Got mostly everything fixed up now, all that's left is to pick up some highlights for the art section. When you said you were updating these stories, I was expecting just a few extra commas or typo corrections, not full-on rewrites. Very cool.
Is there any chance the character bios can get the same Sayonara treatment that those manga pages did? There's so much detail packed into each page, I'd hate for any of it to get left out.

as for the edits, it was mostly for the sake of readability. i figured the pastes must've felt like shit to get through for anyone who didn't have context so inserting vega anon's questions and a bit of scene setting felt like the least i should do to not make people immediately groan and close the tab. focusing a bit more on the characters' thoughts was also me attempting to fix the fact that i rely too much on narration. i'd still say that's the case, because i don't actually like writing dialogue much (and well. my interest in everything pales in comparison to art, but writing is nice for killing time when stuck on the road and such) that said, if i'm proofreading, might as well spare a minute or two to make other little changes to make things nicer.

Well, you know how it is. I have a soft spot for the little jelly bean. The world always needs more upbeat characters like Bibi. And villains who are comically inept at actually being villainous. Inject those numbskulls directly into my veins and let me die with a smile on my face.
Thanks for being so easy to work with. I now steel myself for the arduous task of combing over nearly SIX HUNDRED pages of writing and inserted art to make sure there's no major screwups anywhere.

I think I figured out what's bugging me about the design. Can you make the jacket more... stiff? To me it looks like it's being swept by the wind which isn't what I intended. And make it look more like this. If I don't like the long coattails once they're added then you can just chop them off afterwards. And make his shoes thinner like Oxford shoes if you know what those are.

Good, we're getting there. I'd suggest changing the eyes to a unique shade of brown so they don't get mixed up with the hair. Change the buttons on the shirt to gold. Idk what the grey thing near his neck is supposed to be. Also, the coattails are supposed to be one together (I think, unless you think it would look better with that separation at the end) and gold outline. Also make a version with a black/dark grey shirt like >>57176222 please.

>I'd suggest changing the eyes to a unique shade of brown so they don't get mixed up with the hair.
Sprites rarely take the luxury of adding a new color to the mix just for two pixels.

>Change the buttons on the shirt to gold.
I tested this but I think it's a little too much myself. I'll add 'em to see what you think.

>Also, the coattails are supposed to be one together
Longcoat tails are almost always split, but we could go with a nice morning coat too if you want.

>and gold outline.
Already there! It's visually distracting to carry the gold down to the lower regions, so it's been substituted with a darker shade to tuck the trim comfortably away back there. I brightened it a bit so it's more noticeable.

> Also make a version with a black/dark grey shirt
Okay now you're getting a bit demanding! That's something you ask for earlier in the designing.

Hey, it’s not like we dress in any special way on New Years’ anyway. All we do is eat olives the last 12 seconds of the year. I could imagine people getting together at the main plaza in Mesagoza like what people do in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol square, buuuuut then again we don’t have a one-to-one comparison there. That plaza is meant to be a one-to-one with la Plaza Mayor, also in Madrid.

Surprise bonus sketch! It's Koa's dad and Koa's mom. They usually leave Koa to his own devices and spend the evening together, which Koa's mom highly enjoys. Koa's dad might not show it, but he's happy to have her company too.

Added facts:

Koa's yukata is fashioned after Gyarados. His mom's is fashioned after a shiny Gyarados. Koa's dad thinks he's too old to wear anything fancy (they're both in their late 40s).

This is also the first time I've ever drawn Koa's mom, I think. She could be a distant relative of Drasna or something. I also want to draw (and write) more Koa interactions with the rest of the Alola cast. He crushes hard on Mallow and has an initially competitive bromance with Kiawe. Lana likes pranking him.

My drawing quota is fairly low, actually, compared to some other people here. I rush out new art whenever I make a new character design, but that means other characters of mine can have droughts. It's weird. I also suck ass at backgrounds.

>DRAGON MILF, DRAGON MILF, RAH-RAH-RAH
Hey, can you blame me? Between this and Takamaru's mom I feel like you people have me pegged by now. That said, Na'u (that's her name) is fairly happily married to Ikaika (Koa's dad's name), although they have their fights. She's a lot feistier than he gives her credit for.

>i was hoping you'd chew me out if i missed out on any spanish new years traditions
BIBIANON I DON'T WANT TO CHEW YOU OUT OVER ANYTHING ;-; YOU ARE A PRECIOUS SOUL that said, the only actual Spanish New Years' tradition is counting down 12 seconds until the new year, then you eat 12 olives, one per second. This is a televised event. A lot of people choke while doing this, and I actually don't even like olives, so I eat MnM's instead. Not even actual MnM's, a kiddie version of MnM's with no peanuts. It's called Lacasitos, look it up. It's kind of a weird tradition, so I'm glad I could teach you something!

Forgot to mention you lol
>taking notes on the koa relationship lore
I've talked about it before, but Koa is into either super homely girls (like Mallow) or super active girls (Shauna, Nemona). Zinnia would be a great match for an epilogue story, but maybe less as a love interest. Iris could work if Koa would dare even think he's worthy of being in the same room as one of the world's top dragon tamers. He only uses the internet for dragon master gossip (huge fan of Hassel), so Iris is essentially a celebrity for him.

Koa and Kiawe are essentially gonna be trying to one-up each other in Chapter 3 for a while and 10 minutes after they'll be best friends. It's gonna be great. Also, I've been considering using Guzma in that episode. He'd probably go ahead with the redemption he had at the end of Sun and Moon as a minor antagonist/antihero of sorts, dealing with the fallout of Team Skull as they mess with the Cross Rider shoot in Heahea City.

No technology, no supplies, just what he has on hand that day so that he can bring in the new year re-grounded and with a refreshed mind to deal with existing issues as well as new ones.

Midge usually stays up with her grandma, but now that she's in Kairos she didn't have her grandma in person this year, instead she called her on the phone all night.

>>57180482
Correct!
>>57180563
Circe isn't ACTUALLY Grym's sister, but wants Grym to look up to her as one.

So here's the fun question: if a 16 year old dies and is resurrected by a Pokémon giving it's life force to her, is she legal two years later, or is it necrophilia, Poképhilia, or all three?
>>
Anyway, I'm going to make a cup of tea then head back to bed.

If my body ever realizes my heart doesn't actually beat and no blood flows within my icy veins, and I'm carted off to the university campus and given a date with a defibrillator for the low, low cost of $125,000 (plus tip), am I given a new birth certificate after?
>>
>>57180620
So it's definitely not pokephilia, given that she's ostensibly human. It is arguably not necrophilia either, since she is resurrected and alive at the time of questioning. The question then becomes: Is it legal? The birth certificate says 18, even if biologically technically she's 16 at the time of questioning. Legally speaking, there's precedence for time spent in coma or hospitalised still counts for jail time served, so I'd argue that "being deceased" is actually just an extended medical condition and still counts, thereby making her formally 18.

Previously on Dragon Ball /to-G/, we had discussed anime color theory, and how the rainbow of hair and eye colors are used as visual shorthand to establish and reinforce character traits. And while I've brushed on the topic before, let's use a Carmine case study to examine how Gamufreaku uses Pokemon teams to tell a story.
At the start of the first act of the Teal Mask's story, we travel through a rice paddy and are introduced to the kindly people of Mossui Town... and Carmine. Later, we're told the story of the oni/ogre.
In mythology, an oni represents the opposite of the Japanese ideal: they are loud, aggressive, rude thugs. While all the other locals like the Caretaker are quick to accommodate their new guests, Carmine is even quicker to try and chase us off. When wandering Kitikami later on, multiple townsfolk and Trainers remark on being intimidated by Carmine's behavior and avoiding her. Even though she sees herself as the protector of her community, Carmine is an outcast.
In her initial battle, Carmine leads with a Poochyena--she puts up an Intimidating front, but we know that Poochyena and Mightyena will quickly drop its mask and turn submissive around a stronger opponent. After Poochyena, she uses a Vulpix, then a Poltchageist. From a gameplay perspective, this clues the player into the idea of catching another Convergent Evolution that underscores the themes of Scarlet & Violet's main plot. From a story perspective, these two choices don't mean much to our outsider's perspective until after the battle is over.
In the real world, foxes are adept at hunting down the rodents that would threaten rice crops. Within the realm of Shintoism, foxes are the earthly representatives of the kami Inari--goddess of rice, tea, and prosperity--and protect her shrines. Inari's domain is one of the guiding principles of Shintoism and Japanese culture.

As we begin to explore Mossui Town, we are always within view of at least one Vulpix, showing the town's worship of Inari and adherence to tradition. And no one is more loyal to these traditions than Carmine and her Pokemon. Before we've ever heard the first word of Ogerpon's story, we've already been subconsciously primed to begin questioning the nature of the oni through our first encounter with Carmine.
On the eve of the Mask Festival, we battle Carmine a second time. On this holiday occasion, Vulpix is relieved of guard duty and we are challenged by Carmine's Morpeko and Swadloon instead. Morpeko's mood swings show how something positive can become negative and that something negative can become positive again, while her stewardship of the hikikomori Pokemon introduces us to a softer side of Carmine that we won't see until after Carmine turns her shed upside-down looking for a jinbei to gift to us. While the hiki Pokemon may seem like it would be better suited for Kieren, Carmine's use of Swadloon underscores her own reclusive and Lonely Nature just like a certain other leaf-cloaked outcast.
In the final battle with Carmine at Loyalty Plaza, we see her Kitikami character arc come full circle. Vulpix returns as Ninetails to reaffirm Carmine's commitment to tradition, but after opening up to the player, her Swadloon is now a kind and nurturing Leavanny.
Going from Loyalty Plaza to Central Plaza, Carmine has become more accepting of the outside world during her travels with Briar. Her team now includes Toucannon, a hotheaded symbol of companionship, and Scrafty--a Pokemon that looks like a thug, but is deeply protective of its friends and family.

When making a Pokemon character, it's important to understand how the Pokemon they associate with can be used to weave a narrative.

>so i wonder if the implication was that she caught them dueing practice drills at the academy or something
Hard to say. Carmine attended Bloober School long before we met her, so there was nothing stopping her from picking Toucannon and Scrafty up sooner if she wanted to. Did she overlook them because she didn't like the idea of even foreign Pokemon tainting her precious Kitikami, or is their presence in the Safari Zone purely coincidental and she picked them up during her world tour with Briar?
It's not exactly stated which Regions she and Briar explored while researching the Tera phenomenon in the time gap between Teal Mask and Indigo Disk, but I think we can make a pretty solid inference:
Alola is an American Region like Unova pretty much halfway between Japan and the continental United States. It's a Region where the light of interdimensional crystals bring out hidden superpowers in Pokemon. There's no shortage of Pikipek to be found there, especially outside of Kukui's house.
Bloober School is off the coast of Unova, and across the ocean from N'yark, just north of Paldea would be the Kalos Region, where rare stones touched by the light of AZ's Weapon cause Pokemon to transform and change Type. Scraggy can be encountered roving in gangs on Route 5, right outside of Lumiose City and just up the road from Sycamore's Lab.

I don't believe in coincidences.
>>

People have spent the past 15 years jizzing over Fromsoft games for their use of environmental storytelling, but Pokemon games have been quietly providing some of the best worldbuilding in the industry. Once you're tuned into Gamefreak's specific wavelength of autism and begin to study their entire world as a living, interconnected place, you'll start recognizing all sorts of wild details that most people would never even begin to think about.
This is from the same developers that gave us 1,001 pocket Lillies and thought it was a cool idea to render the entirety of Paldea at all times.
Gamefreak is a fascinating paradox. Simultaneously genius and incomprehensibly retarded. Able to weave all sorts of amazing stories and secrets into the gameplay without ever calling attention to it and yet also somehow unable to write a coherent main plot to save their lives.
>>
>>57183034
>>57183037

>>57183123
I think somebody said something about Taillows and their real world origins. I was surprised that I said "this is not autism, this is methodically planned worldbuilding."
Which I suppose is just what you just said: GF makes amazing worlds, but it needs a bloody writer to make it shine.

Yes, that was also me.
Some of my absolute favorite bit of Gamufreaku worldbuilding comes from X&Y. It is genuinely some of the most amazing, complex, and multifaceted lore in a series that is quietly a masterclass in DEEPEST LORE... and it's all conveyed with some of the absolute worst exposition I've ever seen in any game or genre. I think I may genuinely be the only (still living) person on this planet who actually gets what they were going for and gives a yellow rat's ass.
But let's give an example of them absolutely nailing it.
On Route 16, at the conclusion of the Kalos midgame, we are introduced to Phantump: the souls of children who died while wandering lost in the forest and became reborn within rotting tree stumps. Life, death, renewal--X, Y & Z. One quick trade evolution later, and you'll have early access to Trevenant, a Pokemon that is kind to Pokemon living in its territory but uses its gnarled roots to control trees and trap people in forests forever. This is how Trevenant reproduce in the wild.
And it's not just flavor text.
At the very end of the game as you're searching for the 8th Gym Leader, you enter Route 20, the standard pick-a-path maze we've seen in Lost Cave and Turnback Cave before it. With a twist: as you move through the forest, you'll come across the same landmarks over and over despite taking different paths to get there. Wander around long enough, and you'll be jumped by wild Trevenant. Sometimes alone, sometimes in a pack of five. If you haven't clued into it yet, you're not moving through the forest--the forest is being moved around you, keeping you away from the enclave of abused Pokemon who escaped from bad humans.
A Pokemon horror story, told in its entirety without a single line of dialogue calling attention to it, Gamufreaku just leaves it for their audience to either piece it together or not.
And I think that's fucking rad.

Big note though if you are going to request work from any artist, it's a huge help if you go in knowing exactly what you want from the start. You'll just get a better product that way, as you can start with good composition instead of having to cobble one together.

Fun is for the WEAK!!!!
>>
>>57184153
I knew I wanted the scarf from the beginning, I just didn’t say it until now because I wanted to make sure that everything else was fine first. I think that the issue lies partially in just how much information gets lost over communication and putting the vision to paper and I think that partially there’s just an information issue in the first place. If I could draw I probably would have taken the time to draw an exact copy but I can’t and with my luck by the time I feel good about my artwork (which I haven’t even started developing yet because I’m hard committing to finishing a 50K word novella first) this thread will be long gone. But to be fair to myself it’s not always my fault and just because you’re competent doesn’t mean everyone else is. One time in like 2020 someone offered to draw me something and when he showed me the sketch I was pleased because it wasn’t accurate outfit but it was an outfit that I liked anyways. So I told him to go ahead to color it and he instead sent me a message saying that he would redraw it, which I somehow didn’t see the notification for until I scrolled up later on, EVEN THOUGH I NEVER ASKED HIM TO DO THAT. He said he would get back to the first one but he had to deal with commissions, so I said it was fine. Well a few months pass and he decides it would be a good idea to redraw it again for NO FUCKING REASON and while he did actually improve as an artist, he made my OC look like a girl so I told him to just go back to the first one. He ghosts me and the afterwards the subject comes up again and he said that he deleted the original file but that he would trace it. He never did it and whenever I ask him about it he ghosts me. We still speak occasionally and it’s just now an open secret. Sometimes it’s not always the requester’s fault, which I think a lot of people ignore, willingly or not.
>>
>>57184299
I was recently made aware of the gift horses parable (which I think is FUCKING DUMB but I digress) but this incident was more like the farmer giving me a horse that I am pleased with, then taking it back and saying “I think you’ll like this one better”, but the new horse is worse, so I ask him for the first one again, he says he’ll go back for the other one, but then he comes back with a third horse that’s still worse than the first and only marginally better then the second, and then he tells me that he’ll go back for it, he returns with no horse, I ask him where the first horse is, and then he just leaves. Sure, he might still be the one giving, but that’s a dick move.
Another time, someone did a sketch for me and the hair was mostly fine except for it being all over one eye which was absolutely not part of the design, I asked him if he could fix it and he just said something along the lines of “I’m tired, drawing hair is hard” (it wasn’t even colored), but at least he drew it mostly correctly the next time. There’s a guy here whose OC is named Emily and he can also tell you his stories about artists not being able to follow basic instructions.
Interestingly enough for my most recent request, I spent like two weeks tracing over reference images in illustrator only to get told that they weren’t accurate enough and that he needed a “finalized drawing”, which I obviously don’t have, so another person had to agree to be the middleman for it. I’m not really mad about it because he said he didn’t want to end up messing up even if I though the reference was fine he felt like he might make something in accurate, which confused me a bit, but I’m not an artist. I still haven’t had that request fulfilled yet because the middleman is busy and I also need to decide if I’ll use it for what I originally planned or just use my request tokens instead to ask for cover art for the 50K word story that will come out at some point.

I can't figure out blender but if KK is by no means easy if you want to make stuff from scratch or work from a base. Sliders, overlays, shaders, scalers, proportions, headmods, zip mods, accessories, etc etc etc.
This character from my project (very rough render from last year) has no body underneath his armor.
And the armor is made out of over 130+ seperate pieces, all placed, scaled, edited and colored separately. Never again lol
Also i think I misread something in the thread earlier because I'm tired.

Sometimes, you artistic types scare me. You go through a lot of pain and grind, just for one character or 5 seconds of movement. IF they even managed to reach that.

Looking back on this, one thing that's always amazed me is how, long after I would have decided a drawing is complete or good enough, a real artist keeps going. And just keeps going, with details that seem so obvious in hindsight but never would have crossed my mind on my own.
But it gives me hope seeing little touches like the shafts of sunlight or the colors of the blossoms and realizing "ah, I could be doing that too and I know exactly how I could do it."
Something like that fur trim is gonna take a little while longer.

Okay, bear with me here as best you can:
We are updating the omnibus from the start of summer to include everything written in 2024. bibi anon requested a few days to rewrite all of their stuff. Alex never finished any of his own edits on his own work from throughout the year and also requested a few days to get that finished.
Alex, wishful thinker that he is, read me stating "[All I need to do now is update his and your writing sections]" (paraphrasing).
What that actually means: "I need to copypasta the giga-long writing that you and Alex did earlier in 2024 (and I did).
What he thought that meant: "I am waiting on you and Alex to do an overhaul of your writing the way bibi anon did."
Not only is this not the case, it implies that everyone else in the psychic gestalt also decided to restructure all of their writing and didn't bother to report anything out loud, including several people who are dead and gone.
So while Alex is pestering other people for updates on projects that he volunteered them for, I'm shaking him down for his edits that still aren't done.
Alex shakes down Gene for an update, I shake down Alex for an update, Grym anon sees this and assumes we're both talking to him, and I realize this is all too stupid to type out but I'm committed to explaining it now.
Understand?
No?
Okay, me neither.
