Ice Type is fine and is honestly on the strong side of the game in Singles formats.It's a type that has a good offensive spread, access to a strong mechanic in Snow, and received a lot of strong new pokemon in Baxcalibur, Chien Pao, and Iron Bundle. This is less true in VGC due to the prominence of Incineroar limiting how good Ice Types can really be, but Chien Pao and to a lesser extent Baxcalibur has enjoyed a good amount of success in the format If there's any type that needs help, it's BugAlso stop arguing about Smogon vs VGC that shit is retarded

The meta was just really ice weak and he identified that by bringing a mon that could spam spread ice moves and be tanky enough to stay on the field for a few turns. The fact that Articuno didn't become a meta staple after was due to people realizing that if you give it free reign to spam Blizzard, it wins games, and people adapted to it and made changes to their teams.
